WARDOGS Closed Beta 2 reached 203,558 concurrent players on 4 September 2026. Steam’s official Most Played chart, captured at 19:29 UTC, listed WARDOGS Playtest fourth across all of Steam — behind only Counter-Strike 2 (1,069,870), Dota 2 (811,739) and PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS (236,270), and above FiveM (184,308) and Rust (140,677).

The count kept climbing through the European evening: 183,187 at 18:33 UTC, which SteamDB logged as the all-time peak at that moment, then 203,558 fifty-six minutes later. Steam’s chart updates continuously, so the number you see when you open it will differ; every figure in this article carries the time it was taken.

SteamDB chart of WARDOGS Playtest concurrent players from 29 August to 4 September 2026, climbing past 180,000
SteamDB, 4 September 2026: WARDOGS Playtest concurrent players, 29 August – 4 September. The small bump late on 2 September (25,000–30,000 players, per the developer) is the shooting range that opened a day early; the wall on 3 September is Closed Beta 2 going live at 18:00 UTC.

What WARDOGS' Steam Ranking Shows

In the 19:29 UTC snapshot, WARDOGS sat directly above FiveM and Rust. That is a notable position for a limited beta client belonging to a game that will not enter Early Access until September 10.

WARDOGS is a tactical all-out-warfare FPS developed by BULKHEAD and published by Team17. According to its official Steam store page, matches support up to 100 players divided among three teams competing for a Control Zone on destructible maps.

The Steam chart measures simultaneous users of the WARDOGS Playtest client. It does not represent copies sold, unique beta participants or the number of people in one match.

Anyone who would rather not spend the evenings on it can hand WARDOGS boosting to our crew instead — same account, same progress, played by hand.

How the Beta Climbed to Fourth Place

The first closed beta ran from 21 to 23 August and peaked at 105,774 concurrent players on 23 August, according to Niche Gamer and the community tracker wardogshub.gg; PC Gamer reported close to half a million unique players over its three days, and servers that nobody could get into during the first hour. By 14 August the game had already passed a million Steam wishlists, per BULKHEAD’s own Steam announcement. The second beta beat the first one’s peak inside its first day: Inven Global put day one at 162,488 concurrent players, third on Steam at the time of its count.

A day before the second beta, BULKHEAD opened only the shooting range — and 25,000, then 30,000 people piled in. Game director Joe Brammer’s reaction on X, quoted by PC Gamer on 2 September: “WHY ARE 25,000 OF YOU GETTING INTO THE SHOOTING RANGE, YOU PEOPLE ARE CRAZY”.

The move from third to fourth between those counts is not a WARDOGS decline: the ranking shifts with the other games’ own daily cycles, and every WARDOGS figure in the table is higher than the one before it.

Not Every Beta Player Paid $39.99

Steam’s US store lists the standard WARDOGS pre-order at $39.99, and pre-ordering guarantees access to Closed Beta 2. However, describing the entire beta audience as paid pre-order customers would be inaccurate.

BULKHEAD is also granting free Steam Playtest access in limited waves. The 203,558 figure therefore combines pre-order customers with an unknown number of invited Playtest users. The concurrent-player total cannot be converted into a sales estimate without a verified breakdown of those groups.

Players looking for the available entry routes can find them in Neonsect’s WARDOGS Closed Beta 2 access breakdown.

What the number does not prove

Concurrent players are not the same as sales or long-term retention. The chart confirms strong participation during the beta, but it does not show how many players purchased the game or how many will remain after Early Access begins.

Why BULKHEAD Is Limiting Access

In the official Closed Beta 2 announcement, BULKHEAD described the event as a scale test rather than an open beta. The studio said it would increase Playtest invitations in waves to examine systems that become difficult to evaluate under smaller loads. Brammer put it more bluntly to PC Gamer: the studio is deliberately “starting a controlled fire” to see what breaks first, because 100,000 players spamming a queue tells it less than watching what happens when that many people hit the server browser at once.

The named test areas include server scaling and browsing, the login queue, voice chat, Twitch Drops and DLC entitlements. Reaching 203,558 simultaneous users gives the developer a large test population, but it does not by itself confirm that those systems will operate without problems when Early Access opens.

Closed Beta and Early Access Dates

WARDOGS Closed Beta 2 began on September 3 at 18:00 UTC and is scheduled to end on September 6 at 08:00 UTC. Pre-orders guarantee access during the test, while free Playtest invitations remain subject to BULKHEAD’s staged rollout.

WARDOGS is scheduled to enter Steam Early Access on September 10, 2026. The developer says the game is planned to cost less during Early Access than it will at full release, although it may raise the price as content, systems and polish are added.

The beta’s fourth-place Steam ranking is a clear sign of substantial launch-week interest. Its longer-term significance will depend on how the servers perform, how many participants become active Early Access players and whether that audience continues playing after the test period ends.
