Where to Get Vault Data in Marathon
Vault Data is a special event currency earned each run. Tier 1 Vault Data can be found in Vaults and needs to be exfilled, and is also awarded for killing a UESC Commander whether you successfully exfil or not. Tier 2 Vault Data can only be earned from consecutive Vaults solved in the same run and then successfully exfilled. Both tiers are spent in the new Vault Breaker Armory tab under the Events section, where you can upgrade your Sponsored Kit or purchase weapons and items that work in standard Marathon activities. The Vault Breaker Armory is separate from your normal loadout and is only accessible while the mode is live.

Vault Breaker Armory Weekly Offers
The Armory features a variety of gear and items, including a daily rotating Deluxe weapon, Cryo Key Templates, Prestige Weapons, and more. Tier 2 Vault Data items include higher-tier rewards with 1x limited stock per week, or you can convert that currency to Tier One at 5x per week. Purchases made from the Weekly and Limited Offers apply only to standard Marathon activities — only Kit Upgrades will alter your loadout in Vault Breaker.
Sponsored Kit Upgrade Paths
As you earn Vault Data, different upgrade paths will begin to open. You might want to focus on weapon quality, or invest in equipment and consumables depending on your playstyle. The Sponsored Kit is the only loadout you can bring into Vault Breaker, and upgrading it is the core progression loop of the mode.
Event-Only Prestige Gear
Prestige gear will be available and you can grab one of each during the event. Grab them while you can. Some pinnacle rewards stock will remain fixed in number throughout the full event, meaning once the community exhausts certain items, they’re gone until Vault Breaker returns.
Common Misconceptions About Vault Breaker
Myth: You Can Extract Cryo Archive Gear from Vault Breaker
Vault Breaker eschews one of the most fundamental aspects of extraction shooters — any gear or items you find in the mode will be left behind when you leave. The only thing you’ll take with you is Vault Data. Bungie said eliminating gear extraction will let players experience Cryo Archive without flooding the economy with low-risk, high-power Cryo loot. If you want endgame Cryo gear, you still need to run the main extraction mode.
Myth: Vault Data Carries Over After August 18
All items and gear found in-run are restricted from exfil except event currency and rewards will only be available during the event period. Vault Data is event-specific, meaning unspent currency may not carry forward once the mode goes offline. Spend your currency before August 18 to avoid losing progress.
Myth: Vault Breaker Uses Your Standard Loadout
To access Vault Breaker, you’ll need to equip the free special Sponsored Kit found in the Vault Breaker Armory tab under the Events section. This Sponsored Kit won’t be in its final form when you first grab it. You cannot bring your own gear into the mode — only the Sponsored Kit and its upgrades matter.

Vault Breaker is a meaningful test case for Marathon’s PvE future, but the window is still short for an experimental mode that could define the game’s direction.
Look, the mode solves a real problem. There are clearly players who love the look and feel of Marathon — the world, the lore, the gunplay — but who have zero interest in the constant threat of getting ambushed and losing all their gear. This mode is built for exactly those players. The roguelite structure and separate progression system give it a clear identity, and the fact that you can’t extract Cryo Archive loot protects the main game’s economy while still rewarding your time with cross-mode gear purchases. That’s smart design.
The catch is the schedule. Vault Breaker went live alongside the mid-season update on July 21, and is playable until 18 August — four weeks to learn the systems, farm the currency, chase the limited-stock Prestige gear, and test whether you even like the mode. Bungie is listening for feedback to iterate as they continue to evolve PvE into Season 3, but cramming player testing and progression into a 14-day event feels like artificial scarcity rather than a confident experiment.
