Marathon‘s 1.1.5 patch dropped July 21, 2026, and it’s the first update to add a dedicated PvE mode. Vault Breaker is the headline feature—a crew-or-solo gauntlet through Cryo Archive with persistent progression across multiple runs. The update also introduces Cradle Evolution for level-70 players, voice reporting tools, and a new infil restriction that limits certain equipment to two slots per loadout.

If you’ve been grinding Cradle to max and wondering what comes next, this patch gives you a reason to keep playing. If you’ve been waiting for PvE content that isn’t just extraction-with-AI-enemies, Vault Breaker is that mode.

What Vault Breaker Actually Is

Vault Breaker is Marathon‘s first mode built around challenge escalation rather than PvP extraction. You take your crew, duo, or go solo into Cryo Archive and tackle a series of vaults that get progressively harder. The mode has its own progression system—separate from your main Cradle—so you grow stronger across multiple matches.

The final vault contains what Bungie calls a ‘mysterious entity.’ No details yet on what that means, but it’s the carrot at the end of the stick. This is the first time Marathon has given PvE players a dedicated endgame loop that doesn’t revolve around extraction racing or ranked points.

Vault Breaker progression is unique to the mode. That means whatever upgrades or power you earn inside Vault Breaker stay there—they don’t bleed into your PvP loadouts or main Cradle tracks. It’s a separate grind, which is either good news (you can ignore it if PvE isn’t your thing) or bad news (you have another progression system to manage).

Cradle Evolution and What It Costs You

If your Cradle hit level 70, you now have the option to Evolve Cradle. This isn’t a simple prestige button—it resets your Cradle to level 1, strips all invested energy from every track, and gives you +1 energy cap in return. You also get 1 free energy per Evolution stage.

You can evolve up to 7 times total. That’s 7 extra energy slots if you’re willing to grind Cradle from scratch seven times. The math matters here: each evolution buys you one more energy to allocate across your Cradle tracks, but you lose everything you’ve built so far. It’s a long-term investment that only makes sense if you’re playing Marathon daily and want to min-max your build ceiling.

The 25% Cradle progress reduction that shipped earlier has been reverted. Leveling your Cradle is back to the original rate, so if you were holding off on Evolution because progress felt slow, that friction is gone.

Is Cradle Evolution Worth It?

Depends on where you are in the grind. If you’re a casual player who just hit 70 and you’re happy with your current build, there’s no urgent reason to reset. The +1 energy cap is a long-term power gain, but you’ll spend weeks re-leveling to access it.

If you’re deep into ranked or pushing high-tier content where every stat point matters, Evolution becomes mandatory after a few cycles. Seven full resets is months of grinding, but the energy ceiling advantage at the end is real.

The Loadout-Limited Infil Change

Starting mid-season, some equipment items are tagged Loadout-Limited. You can only bring two of these items into infil. If you try to load in with three or more, you’ll hit a Crew Error and won’t be able to start the run.

This doesn’t stop you from picking up extra Loadout-Limited gear during a match—it only restricts what you can bring at the start. The patch notes do list them: Bubble Shield, Chem Grenade, EMP Grenade, Flechette Grenade, Frag Grenade and Heat Grenade. Five of the six are grenades, so in practice this is a cap on grenade stacking with the Bubble Shield folded in, rather than a broad equipment category.

This is Bungie’s way of reining in stacked loadouts without touching item stats. If players were running triple-stim or double-armor infils that trivialized early fights, this cap forces loadout diversity. You’ll know which items are affected when the ‘mid-season’ window hits—no exact date given.

Ganglion Armory Economy Changes

Ganglion barters now have a stock limit of 3 per refresh, except for Hyphatic Gel (which stays unlimited). Some barter costs have been adjusted to include Rubber Salvage as a required material.

The reroll bug is fixed—Ganglion barters were rerolling during unintended scenarios, which let players cheese the shop rotation. That’s gone now. If you were banking on infinite barter refreshes to farm specific items, expect slower acquisition rates.

ChangeWhat It Means

Everything Else in 1.1.5

Voice moderation is live. Players can now report voice chat violations, and Bungie’s moderation system will review them. Full details at the official support page (bung.ie/voicemoderation). This is standard post-launch housekeeping—most live games add this within the first few months.

Pursuit Upgrades had a few bugs: the MIDA capstone V upgrade displayed wrong requirements, and stacked nodes could lock if you hadn’t unlocked the 6th capstone yet. Both fixed. If you were stuck on a node that wouldn’t unlock, try again.

Inventory fixes include a toggle to disable free sponsored kits on death. If you’ve been annoyed by auto-equipping a kit you didn’t want, you can turn that off now. Scrap conversion into credits also works properly—previously it would fail even when you had inventory space.

Map Fixes

Container and loot interactions in Algae Ponds, Night Marsh Complex, Night Marsh AI Uplink, and Cryo Vault 02 are fixed. These were minor bugs—UESC Certs or containers you couldn’t interact with, or geometry clipping. If you’ve been avoiding certain loot spawns because they were bugged, they’re safe to grab now.

Ranked Display and Sponsored Kit Bugs

Rank points were sometimes showing as ‘0’ in the Run Report even when you gained or lost points. That’s fixed. Ranked sponsored kits also refresh immediately when you rank up or down—previously they’d stay at your old rank’s loadout until the next match.

These are quality-of-life fixes that don’t change ranked play, but they do stop the confusion when you finish a match and the UI lies to you about your point delta.

Weapon and Ability Balance in 1.1.5

This is not a content-only patch. Bungie shipped a real balance pass alongside Vault Breaker, touching Runner Shell abilities, equipment and nine weapons — if you main any of the below, your run changes today.

D54 Battle Pistol took the heaviest hit: precision multiplier and effective range both cut. It now needs 3 precision bursts to down a Grey Shield Runner (up from 2) and 4 against a Purple Shield (up from 3). Damage falloff was pulled in by 10% across stat tiers — at 100 Range, falloff now starts at 34m instead of 38m and bottoms out at 64m instead of 72m.

V22 Volt Thrower went the other way. The 0.5s target acquisition delay is gone entirely, projectile velocity rises from 56 m/s to 80 m/s, and the fire rate curve was retuned: max RPM up from 507.3 to 540, min down from 309.3 to 140. Bungie framed the lock removal as enabling ambush play.

On the ability side, Assassin‘s Smoke Dive cooldown drops from 60s to 45s. Recon‘s Echo Pulse sends fewer waves at longer intervals with a shorter ping duration — a straight nerf to passive scanning. Sentinel gets a Defender System cooldown reduction, more Snare Mine damage, and Prey Tracker no longer scrambled by Signal Jammer. Destroyer, Rook, Bubble Shield and Energy Amp were also touched.

Note

The full balance list runs to nine weapons and five Runner Shells. The numbers above are the changes most likely to alter how a run plays; check the official notes for the complete pass.

The Bottom Line

Depends on whether you wanted PvE content or not. Vault Breaker is Marathon’s first real endgame mode for players who don’t care about ranked extraction, and the persistent progression gives it legs. Cradle Evolution is a long-term grind that only matters if you’re min-maxing at the highest level. The Loadout-Limited infil change could be significant depending on which items get restricted, but we won’t know until mid-season. If you’ve been waiting for a reason to come back to Marathon, this patch has it. If you were hoping for weapon balance or meta shifts, keep waiting.
