Hit level 70 on your Cradle and the game shows you a shiny new “Evolve Cradle” button with zero warning about what it actually does to your progress. That single UI choice has probably cost more wasted hours across the Marathon playerbase than any bug in Update 1.1.5. This piece walks through what that patch actually changed operationally — Cradle Evolution, the Vault Breaker exfil rule, Loadout-Limited items, and the balance pass — so you do not have to learn any of it the expensive way.

TL;DR

  • Evolving your Cradle at level 70 wipes every track back to level 1 and resets all invested energy — only do it when you are ready to regrind, not the moment the button appears.
  • Vault Breaker gear never exfils; only Vault Data does, and the mode now closes for good on 18 August 2026 after Bungie’s extension from the original 4 August date.
  • Loadout-Limited items (Bubble Shield and five grenade types) are capped at 2 per infil now — stack three and you get a Crew Error before the run even starts.
  • Ganglion barters cap at 3 stock except Hyphatic Gel, some now cost Rubber Salvage, and the reroll exploit is patched out.
  • The balance pass hit the D54 Battle Pistol hard and buffed the V22 Volt Thrower, so your go-to loadout from before 1.1.5 may already be outdated.

The Short Answer

Update 1.1.5 did three things at once: it added Vault Breaker, Marathon‘s first PvE-only mode; it introduced Cradle Evolution, a prestige system for maxed-out Cradles; and it quietly reworked how much gear you are allowed to carry into a run. None of these are individually complicated, but each has a trap that is not explained anywhere in the tooltips.

The short version: do not evolve your Cradle unless you have already spent everything you wanted from your current track, do not build a loadout around stacking three of the same grenade anymore, and do not sit on Vault Data thinking you have time — the mode closes permanently on 18 August 2026. Everything else in the patch is straightforward balance tuning that mostly affects which weapons are worth running right now.

The Cradle Evolution Reset Nobody Reads Twice

Cradle Evolution unlocks once your Cradle hits level 70, and the game presents it as a reward — which is technically true, but it undersells what you are agreeing to. This is a full reset dressed up as an upgrade.

What Evolving Actually Resets

Choosing to evolve resets your Cradle to level 1 and wipes all invested energy in every track. In exchange you get a permanent increase to your Cradle’s energy limit and one energy point per evolution stage you have completed. That is a real long-term gain, but it means everything you have built toward on your current pass is gone the moment you confirm.

Why 7 Evolutions Is the Ceiling

The Cradle can be evolved a total of 7 times, so this is not a system you touch casually more than a handful of times over the game’s life. Treat the 70-level climb before each evolution as its own mini-season: finish whatever you are chasing on your current track first, because there is no undo once you press the button.

Vault Breaker's Exfil Rule Will Burn You Once

Vault Breaker drops you into Cryo Archive with no rival Runners, only AI-controlled UESC forces, progressively tougher Vaults, and a currency called Vault Data. The catch that trips up almost everyone on their first run: normal loot does not come home with you.

Every weapon, implant, and consumable you pick up mid-run in Vault Breaker stays behind on exfil. The only things that leave with you are Vault Data and specific event rewards — the same detail the Vault Breaker Vault Data farming guide covers in more depth. There are two tiers of Vault Data, and they behave completely differently.

Tier 2 is the one that costs teams hours if they do not understand it. Skip a Vault mid-run to rush an exfil and you break the chain, which means no Tier 2 currency for that run at all. Solving them back to back, then exfilling, is the only route.

Bungie extended Vault Breaker’s original two-week window, and the mode now closes for good on 18 August 2026 instead of the initially announced 4 August date. Whatever Vault Data you have not spent in the Armory when that happens simply disappears — it does not carry into Season 3, which begins 22 September 2026 with the permanent version of this system, as the Marathon Season 3 roadmap guide lays out.

Loadout-Limited Items: The Crew Error Trap

Starting mid-season, six items got tagged Loadout-Limited: Bubble Shield, Chem Grenade, EMP Grenade, Flechette Grenade, Frag Grenade, and Heat Grenade. You are capped at 2 of these combined per infil. Try to bring three and the game blocks you with a Crew Error before you even queue.

Bungie’s own patch notes are blunt about why: feedback made it clear that grenade spam is still an issue on Cryo and that Bubble Shields were flattening high-level fights. That is a rare case of a developer note directly confirming what the community had been complaining about for a while, rather than dancing around it.

Grenade-Heavy Squads

If your usual loadout leaned on three or four grenades between teammates for area denial, that composition no longer infils as written. Pick your two best throwables and build the rest of the kit around direct-fire weapons instead.

Bubble Shield Mains

Bubble Shield now also loses its old approach slowdown when a player enters the volume, which softens the defensive value slightly even before the loadout cap. Pairing it with one grenade type still fits inside the 2-item limit.

Mixed Support Kits

Duos and trios that split loadout roles across teammates are least affected — the cap is per player, not per crew, so spreading grenade types across your team still lets the squad carry variety overall.

The Balance Pass Changed What You Carry

The mid-season update was not just systems work. Several weapons and kits shifted enough that a loadout built before 1.1.5 is worth re-checking.

  • D54 Battle Pistol now needs three precision bursts to down a Grey Shield Runner, up from two, and its damage falloff was pulled in
  • V22 Volt Thrower lost its old 0.5-second target lock and its projectile speed jumped from 56 to 80 m/s
  • Assassin’s Smoke Dive cooldown dropped from 60 seconds to 45
  • Recon’s Echo Pulse got weaker
  • Sentinel received a straight improvement
  • PvP health baseline dropped from 560 to 400 across the board

That last line matters more than it looks. A flat health drop shifts every weapon’s effective time-to-kill down, not just the ones that got explicit buffs, so encounters across the board feel faster right now.

No Time to Grind Before the Mode Closes?

Not everyone has hours to spare before 18 August, and Vault Breaker specifically punishes half-measures — a rushed exfil that breaks a Tier 2 chain wastes the whole run’s effort.

  • Prioritize Commander kills over deep Vault chains if you only have short sessions — that Tier 1 currency pays out even on a failed exfil
  • Spend Vault Data as you earn it rather than banking it, since anything unspent when the mode closes is gone
  • Use the Solo queue if you cannot reliably find a duo or trio — it runs with reduced UESC aggression specifically to make solo runs less punishing

If your schedule genuinely will not allow the runs needed to hit deeper Vaults before the window shuts, a boost service is one option some players use to close that gap — buying a set number of runs gets you exactly that many runs, and someone still has to solve the Vault chains and hit the exfil correctly for Tier 2 currency to count.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The single most avoidable mistake right now is evolving a Cradle the instant it hits level 70 out of habit, without checking whether you have already spent what you wanted on the current track. The prompt does not warn you loudly enough, and that is a legitimate design gap worth being annoyed about.

On the other side, the Loadout-Limited change is one I actually like. Grenade spam trivializing fights on Cryo was a real problem, and capping it at the loadout level — rather than nerfing individual grenade damage into uselessness — solves it without gutting the item type for people who use it sparingly.

People will tell you Vault Breaker gear is “basically free loot” because it is a PvE mode with no rival Runners. That framing misses the actual rule: none of that gear exfils. The only thing worth chasing in there is Vault Data and the Armory purchases it unlocks — everything else you pick up mid-run is temporary by design.

Is It Worth Grinding Vault Breaker Right Now?

Depends on how much Vault Data you are sitting on and how close you are to a Tier 2 Armory item. If you have already claimed the Prestige gear and Cryo Key Templates you wanted, there is little reason to force extra sessions before 18 August — the currency has no life after the mode closes anyway.

If you are still short on Vault Data or have not touched the Sponsored Kit upgrades, it is worth a few focused sessions now rather than waiting. It is a genuinely fun detour from the standard extraction loop, not a system you need to master for Season 3, since the full version launching in September is confirmed to work differently.

FAQ

When does Vault Breaker actually close?
18 August 2026. Bungie extended the original 4 August end date by two weeks partway through the event.
Does gear from Vault Breaker carry into normal Marathon modes?
Only what you buy from the Vault Breaker Armory using Vault Data carries over — gear picked up mid-run during the event itself does not exfil.
Can I undo a Cradle Evolution?
No. Once you confirm, the Cradle resets to level 1 and all invested track energy is gone; the energy limit increase and per-stage energy grant are the only permanent gains.
How many Loadout-Limited items can I bring into a run?
Two combined, across Bubble Shield, Chem Grenade, EMP Grenade, Flechette Grenade, Frag Grenade, and Heat Grenade. A third triggers a Crew Error at infil.
Is the D54 Battle Pistol still viable after the nerf?
It still works, but it now needs three precision bursts to down a Grey Shield Runner instead of two, so it lost some of its earlier one-clip efficiency.

The Bottom Line

If you are still mid-climb on your Cradle, hold off on evolving until you have actually spent what you wanted from the current track — that reset is permanent and easy to trigger by accident. If you are sitting on unspent Vault Data, treat 18 August as a hard deadline, not a soft one. It is a solid mid-season patch, not a system that demands you relearn the whole game, but the two resets buried inside it are exactly the kind of thing that costs hours if nobody warns you first.
