Patch 7.1.0 (22 September 2026) changes where Helldivers 2 places enemies when a squad spreads out. In short: when the global enemy count reaches its maximum, new enemies are preferably spawned near a diver on low enemy pressure, and when the count is over budget, far-away enemies are despawned. Splitting up does not guarantee a quiet route. Arrowhead calls the result “more balanced” and publishes no numbers. Everything below comes from the official 7.1.0 notes on Steam.

The Three Spawn Changes in 7.1.0

Arrowhead’s stated problem: “Sometimes enemies did not spawn in a balanced way between players if the team spread out over the map,” and part of the enemy budget went on enemies “far away from players and … not really relevant to them.” The fix has three parts, each with its own condition:

  1. Pressure per diver. “Enemy pressure on Helldivers is now measured based on enemies count and distance and used to balance enemy spawns.”
  2. At the global cap: spawns near a low-pressure diver. When a Helldiver is on low enemy pressure and the global enemy count reaches its maximum (“set for performance reasons”), enemies are “preferably spawned near them”. Arrowhead expects this to address “the feeling of roaming into empty outposts”.
  3. Over budget: distant enemies despawn. “When enemies count is over budget, far away enemies are despawned.”

These rules sit in their own section of the notes, separate from the Evacuate High-Value Assets changes.

Players short on time can put Helldivers 2 boosting alongside a normal playthrough rather than in place of one.

Two Examples, With the Conditions Kept

A diver clears side objectives alone

Leaving the squad does not by itself make you the low-pressure diver — you may walk into the heaviest fight on the map. If the detached diver has lower enemy pressure and the global cap is reached, the system preferentially spawns enemies near them. At the cap, a low-pressure diver may receive more spawns; below it, the notes describe no change for that diver.

A group is left far behind

Once the enemy count is over budget, enemies far from players can be despawned. The notes do not say how far “far away” is, or whether it covers a group that is actively chasing you.

If you split often, a loadout that can hold on its own is a sensible habit — our advice, not something the patch requires. For context on how spawns worked before 7.1.0, see our Helldivers 2 hidden mechanics guide.

What the Notes Don't Publish, and Don't Prove

Not published: the pressure formula, the number behind the global enemy maximum, the distance at which an enemy counts as “far away”, and whether patrols, bug breaches or bot drops count towards pressure or the budget.

The published rules also don’t show that splitting up by itself raises the total number of enemies, that each diver gets an equal share, or that running a set distance makes pursuers disappear. These may or may not be true in play; they just don’t follow from what Arrowhead wrote.

This covers 7.1.0 as published on 22 September 2026; the official Steam news feed was last checked on 22 September 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did 7.1.0 make enemy spawns harder?
The notes only say spawns are more balanced between separated Helldivers; they don’t say harder or easier overall.
When does patch 7.1.0 despawn distant enemies?
When the enemy count is over budget, far-away enemies are despawned. The notes don’t give the distance.
Does splitting up guarantee a quiet route?
Nothing in the notes guarantees it. At the global enemy cap, enemies are preferably spawned near a diver on low pressure, and a detached diver is not necessarily on low pressure.
