Base building in Enshrouded 1.0 reaches much more of the map. Keen Games’ changelog of 14 October 2026 opened most of the areas that used to be no-build zones, and 1.0 went live on 15 October 2026.
TL;DR
- Per Keen Games’ 1.0 changelog, most former no-build zones are open, the new Airborne Architect skill lets you build while flying, and you can run 15 Flame Altars after the Flame level before Cinder’s Cradle and 16 at Flame level 11.
- At Flame level 11 your altars push back the Shroud; world settings can lower that requirement.
- For location, a community guide suggests weighing fast-travel coverage, nearby resources and flat room to expand; the named picks below are community picks, not developer recommendations.
- Moving is two different jobs. Within the same base: place a new altar, grow its area over what you keep, then extinguish the old one. To another region: the buildings do not move; you carry the items over and build again.
Flame Level Upgrade
Your world's Flame raised at the Altar to the level you pick, up through Flame level 11.
What Changed for Bases in 1.0
Four changes in the 1.0 changelog (14 October 2026, version 1.0.0.0) matter most for bases. They are in the table below; the full list is in the official changelog on Steam.
Storage and station changes
You can now upgrade a storage chest, or turn it into a magic chest, right where it stands, without emptying it and picking it up. Late in the game you can place a gem forge in your base. The new progression tier also brings a survivor who specialises in Ancient knowledge and recipes.
Factory limit
Each world now has a cap on factories. Keen calls the cap very generous and expects few players to reach it. A warning appears as you get close, and once you hit it, no more factories can be placed.
Altar save safeguards
Keen also added safeguards for saves with an absurd number of Flame Altars, and says it cannot promise they will always work.
| Change | In 1.0 |
|---|---|
| No-build zones | Most are now open to bases |
| Airborne Architect | New skill: build while flying |
| Flame Altar cap | 15 before Cinder's Cradle, 16 at Flame 11 |
| Shroud pushback | Altars clear the Shroud at Flame 11 |
Where the grind outlasts the interest, Enshrouded boosting picks it up from wherever the account already stands.
How Enshrouded Bases Work: The Flame Altar

A base is built around a Flame Altar. Per the Flame Altar wiki page (pre-1.0 data, not stated as changed in the 1.0 changelog), the altar marks the spot, building inside its boundaries is permanent, and changes outside its boundaries reset after 30 minutes or on a game restart. The altar is crafted with 5 Stone and unlocked by the quest “Claim A Spot For Your Base”; the quest page says you do not have to use the suggested plains spot and can pick another area above the Shroud, as long as building is allowed there. Survivors and crafting stations live in the base, which is why the cap and the build area matter.
How to Choose the Best Base Location in Enshrouded 1.0

A fixed list ages quickly, so start with criteria. One community guide published around the 1.0 launch tells players to look less at scenery and more at three practical things: the map coverage fast travel provides, nearby resources, and room to expand on fairly flat ground. Because changes outside the altar reset after 30 minutes, our reading is that resources within easy reach of the boundary save hauling.
| Criterion | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Fast travel and map coverage | Less walking with full bags |
| Nearby resources | Less hauling; only the altar zone keeps your changes |
| Flat room to expand | Less terraforming; room for workshops and rooms |
| Above-Shroud ground | Needed, not enough: some no-build zones remain |
Community picks by region
These are candidates from community guide pages, not Keen’s recommendations, and we have not checked them in the client. Before you commit materials, look at five things on the spot: a landmark you can find again, what you can gather inside a first-level altar’s area (a 40 m edge in the Early Access planner), enemies and Shroud nearby, room to grow towards a 160 m edge, and the spot’s main drawback. The guides are listed under Sources and Confidence.
| Region | Community pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Springlands | Plains near Longkeep (quest spot) | Flat; stone, wood, fiber |
| Springlands | Lakeside north of Braelyn Bridge | Flat; pond, reeds, wildlife |
| Revelwood | Pikemead's Reach | 3 Shrines, 2 Sanctums; copper, hardwood, amber |
| Veilwater Basin | Altar right at the entrance | Saves trips; not a main base |
| Nomad Highlands | Plateau as a regional hub | For later trips north |
Cinder’s Cradle
Cinder’s Cradle is the new biome beyond the gates past Veilwater Basin: a lava wasteland below and floating islands of the Ancients above. One community guide reports that the Ancient Gate sits between Cromville Hot Spring and Lake Luma, opens at Flame level 10, and suggests placing an altar just outside the gate, or in a safe spot inside, as soon as you can. We have not seen a named base pick inside the biome yet.
A Starter Base Layout
Our advice for a first base, built on what the 1.0 changelog says about storage, factories and building:
- Altar in the middle. The build area grows with the altar’s level (a 40 m edge at the first level in the planner data), so a central altar lets each upgrade cover the base evenly instead of pushing past one wall.
- Chests next to the crafting stations. In 1.0 the factory menus show the resources sitting in magic chests, and a storage chest can be upgraded, or turned into a magic chest, right where it stands. Start with plain chests beside the stations and upgrade them in place later.
- Room for survivors and their beds. Survivors live in the base, and the community list for the last Flame upgrade asks for 18 survivors with Sheltered Beds. Leave space for beds from the start rather than squeezing them in at the end.
- Factories in moderation. Each world has a factory cap. Keen calls it very generous and shows a warning before you reach it, so it matters only for very large production halls.
- Height with Airborne Architect. The new skill in the middle of the skill tree lets you build while flying, so roofs and tall walls no longer need scaffolding. Plan it into your skill points after the 1.0 reset.
- Grow the area when you need it. Upgrade the altar for more space; the planner data puts the later levels behind Shroud Cores and Shroud Nexus. The gem forge arrives late in the game, so keep a spot free near the other stations.
Flame Altar Limits and Build Area
The world-wide cap is the hard limit on how many bases or outposts you can run: 15 after the next Flame level and 16 at Flame level 11, per the changelog. A community source from the early-access period says the Flame level is world-wide, while each altar’s own upgrade level sets that altar’s build area. Existing saves also have the skill tree reset the first time they load in 1.0.0.0, so Airborne Architect has to be fitted into your respent points; our Enshrouded 1.0 max level and skill tree reset guide covers that.
That planner data lists upgrade costs of 1 Shroud Core for Level 2, 5 Shroud Core for Level 3 (needs Flame Level 2), and 5 Shroud Nexus for Level 4 (needs Flame Level 3). It comes from a community Flame Altar planner, and our reading is that it is early-access data.

Moving an Altar or a Whole Base After 1.0
The 1.0 changelog does not describe a relocation mechanic, so what follows comes from community guides plus our reading of how altars work. A third-party wiki guide written after the 1.0 launch says an altar cannot be moved once placed. That leaves two different jobs.
Warning
Pre-1.0 Steam reports warn that what stands in an extinguished altar’s zone is exposed and can be lost if no other altar covers it. A new altar placed somewhere else does not protect the old buildings. Copy the world save before either job.
Moving the altar within the same base
Use this when you want the altar in a better spot but the buildings stay where they are. The steps below are the safe order; the same order is in our Flame Altar guide. We have not yet checked it in the 1.0 client, so keep the save copy until you have looked over the base.
Moving to another region
Buildings do not travel with an altar. Empty the chests and carry what you need, place and upgrade an altar at the new site, and build there again. Extinguish the old altar only when you need its slot back, and only after everything you want is out. On cost, using the Early Access planner figures above, bringing a new altar back to its fourth level means 6 Shroud Cores and 5 Shroud Nexus; no source gives hours for gathering them.
Moving the altar within the same base: every condition comes before the old altar goes out.
-
1
Back up the world save
Copy the save before you start, so you can go back if something is lost.
-
2
Check you have a free altar slot
The new altar has to fit under the cap: 15 before Cinder's Cradle, 16 at Flame level 11.
-
3
Place the new altar
Put it where its area can cover the structures and chests you want to keep.
-
4
Grow the new altar's area first
A new altar starts at its first level. If its area does not reach everything you keep, upgrade it now, before touching the old one.
-
5
Check coverage
Walk the base and confirm every structure and chest you keep is inside the new altar's area.
-
6
Extinguish the old altar
Only now, with the new area in place and checked.
-
7
Check the result
Look over the base. If anything is missing, restore the save copy.
What the Sources Do Not Cover
Not stated in the sources checked: the 1.0 build-area size and material cost per altar level, whether 1.0 changed the extinguish-and-rebuild relocation, and named community base picks inside Cinder’s Cradle.
Our Take
1.0 gives you more places to build; the 15 or 16 altar cap decides how many.
Our reading: choose a site by fast travel, resources and flat room, then treat the first altar as cheap, since moving later means a new altar and new upgrades. Check each community pick against your own world before committing materials.
