Diablo 4‘s Legacy Runewords are a set of 19 classic-named crafting recipes — Enigma, Stealth, Grief and others — that surfaced in Season 15 client data, where a normal-quality base item plus specific runes gets transmuted in the Horadric Cube into a fixed-affix item. The only thing Blizzard has actually published about them is a single bug-fix line in a September 17, 2026 hotfix. This guide separates that one official sentence from everything the community has since pieced together, tables all 19 recipes found so far, and lists exactly what still isn’t confirmed.
TL;DR
- The only official text is Hotfix 2 (September 17, 2026), which fixed a bug where transfiguring 3 Ancestral Stealth Rune Word armors granted Enigma’s power instead of Stealth’s
- Per community sources (d4guides, Maxroll), Legacy Runewords are made by transmuting a normal-quality base item of the right type with the listed runes in the Horadric Cube
- d4guides counts 19 runewords across 84 item variants, but labels its own values “not yet verified in game”
- Whether all 19 are actually obtainable live, and their exact power values, is not published by Blizzard
- Don’t confuse these with the older Vessel of Hatred Runewords system, which uses a different rune pair socketed into gear
What Blizzard Confirmed About Legacy Runewords
Blizzard’s Season 15 overview and the 3.2.1 patch notes do not describe Legacy Runeword recipes, powers, or any obtaining rule anywhere in the documents checked. The only official Blizzard text that names these items at all is Hotfix 2, released September 17, 2026 for patch 3.2.1, which reads: “Fixed an issue where transfiguring 3 Ancestral Stealth Rune Word armors would grant a Stealth with the power from Enigma.” That single line is the entirety of Blizzard’s public acknowledgment — it confirms that Stealth and Enigma Rune Word armors exist as functioning items in the live game, but it says nothing about how they’re made, what the other 17 do, or whether the full recipe list is an intended feature.
How Legacy Runewords Work, Per the Community

With no official crafting explanation, two community sources describe the same mechanic. d4guides: a base item and the matching runes go into the Horadric Cube and come out as the runeword with fixed affixes and its own power. Maxroll puts it as “created using a normal quality base item with the required Runes and Transmuting them in the Horadric Cube” and adds that “transmuting an Ancestral base item will yield an Ancestral Runeword item.” A third community write-up (aoeah) says the base needs no sockets and the result cannot be tempered — one source, not checked by us.
Getting there is a rune-collecting problem more than a crafting one — Enigma alone lists Jah, Ith and Ber. Blizzard hasn’t published drop sources or rates for the runes these recipes name, so there is no hour estimate to give.
Warning
d4guides labels its recipe values as “computed from the formulas, not yet verified in game.” If you plan around a specific power value, treat it as a calculation until you see the item.
Step-by-Step: Crafting a Legacy Runeword (Community Method)
The method community sources describe; not verified by us in-game.
-
1
Get the correct base item type
a normal-quality (white) item matching the runeword's required slot, such as a chest piece for Enigma or a helm for Lore; no sockets are required on it.
-
2
Collect the exact runes listed
for Enigma that's Jah, Ith and Ber; other recipes list two to five runes each.
-
3
Open the Horadric Cube
the crafting device used for all Season 15 transmute recipes.
-
4
Place the base item and the matching runes into the recipe
the Cube combines them to produce the runeword item.
-
5
Use an Ancestral base for an Ancestral result
transmuting an Ancestral base item yields an Ancestral Runeword item instead of a normal one.
Players short on time can put Diablo IV boosting alongside a normal playthrough rather than in place of one.
The 19 Legacy Runeword Recipes Found So Far
d4guides has cataloged all 19 runewords with their 84 variants across compatible weapon and armor types now sitting in its database, cross-checked against Maxroll’s independent list of the same 19 names. The table below lists the rune set and every compatible base type as d4guides gives them (client data for 3.2.1). Community lists differ on the order the runes are written in for several recipes (Call to Arms, Stealth, Infinity, Phoenix); whether placement order matters in the Cube is not stated by any source we checked.
How to read what is known: official — Stealth and Enigma exist as live items (Hotfix 2); client data — the 19 names, rune sets and base types (d4guides, Maxroll); published but unverified — d4guides prints power values for each runeword, computed from formulas and, in its own words, not yet verified in game; unknown — rune order requirements, drop sources for the runes, and whether every recipe is obtainable on live.
| Runeword | Runes | Compatible bases (d4guides) |
|---|---|---|
| Prudence | Mal, Tir | Chest Armor |
| Leaf | Tir, Ral | Staff |
| Insight | Ral, Tir, Tal, Sol | Bow, Crossbow, Glaive, Polearm, Quarterstaff |
| Enigma | Jah, Ith, Ber | Chest Armor |
| Spirit | Tal, Thul, Ort, Amn | Axe, Dagger, Flail, Focus, Mace |
| Holy Thunder | Eth, Ral, Ort, Tal | Flail, Mace |
| King's Grace | Amn, Ral, Thul | Flail, Mace, Sword |
| Phoenix | Vex, Vex, Jah, Lo | Axe, Dagger, Flail, Focus, Mace |
| Pattern | Tal, Ort, Thul | Dagger |
| Rain | Ort, Mal, Ith | Chest Armor |
| Call to Arms | Amn, Ral, Mal, Ohm, Ist | Axe, Dagger, Flail, Focus, Mace |
| Edge | Tir, Tal, Amn | Bow, Crossbow, Glaive, Polearm, Quarterstaff |
| Ancient's Pledge | Ral, Ort, Tal | Focus, Shield, Totem |
| Strength | Amn, Tir | Axe, Dagger, Flail, Focus, Mace |
| Grief | Eth, Tir, Lo, Mal, Ral | Berserker Axe, Phase Blade |
| Lore | Ort, Sol | Helm |
| Infinity | Ber, Ber, Mal, Ist | Bow, Crossbow, Glaive, Polearm, Quarterstaff |
| Stealth | Eth, Tal | Chest Armor |
| Zephyr | Ort, Eth | Bow, Crossbow |
What's Still Not Confirmed
Three things remain genuinely open. Whether all 19 community-documented recipes are craftable as intended features, rather than inert data artifacts, is not stated in the season overview, the 3.2.1 notes or Hotfix 2 — only Hotfix 2’s bug-fix line confirms Stealth and Enigma exist as functioning live items. The exact power and stat values of each runeword as it exists live, independently verified in-game, are not published anywhere checked. And whether Blizzard intends to keep, adjust or remove the system, plus whether the seasonal runes themselves persist after Season 15 ends, is not addressed in those posts; d4guides raises the same question about the seasonal runes.
Common Mix-Ups With Legacy Runewords in Season 15

These Are Not the Vessel of Hatred Runewords
Diablo 4 already has an older, unrelated system also called “Runewords,” introduced with the Vessel of Hatred expansion, where Runes of Ritual are combined with Runes of Invocation and socketed into 2-socket items. The Season 15 Legacy Runewords covered in this guide use a completely different input — a common-quality base item plus a specific rune combination transmuted in the Horadric Cube — and produce named items like Enigma and Grief rather than a cause-and-effect pairing. Sharing a name is the only thing the two systems have in common.
Recipe Contents vs. Rune Order
Two things get mixed up. The set of runes for each recipe is the same across the lists we compared. The order they are written in differs between lists for Call to Arms, Stealth, Infinity and Phoenix, and one widely shared image merges Call to Arms with Ancient’s Pledge (Consolepulse points this out). No source we checked states that placement order matters in the Cube or what happens on a wrong combination — so this is a discrepancy between lists, not a documented risk.
Warning
The two systems called Runewords use different inputs; make sure you are following a Season 15 Legacy Runeword recipe, not a Vessel of Hatred rune pair.
Where Legacy Runewords Fit in Season 15 Crafting
Legacy Runewords are one of several Horadric Cube-based systems added or expanded this season. The Cube itself also handles the four official recipes Blizzard did publish this season — reroll, Mythic upgrades and amalgamation — which are covered separately in the site’s Season 15 Horadric Cube recipes guide rather than repeated here. Season 15 also introduced its own confirmed item category, the Legacy Uniques, which is a distinct, Blizzard-confirmed system unrelated to the community-found Runewords in this guide — see the Legacy Uniques reference for those nine items. For the season’s headline activity that generates a lot of the loot feeding into crafting decisions like this one, the Waking Nightmares explainer covers how those encounters work. Players carrying gear and materials into this patch from a previous season may also want the Rebirth and War Plans guide for how that transfer works.
Our Take: Are Legacy Runewords Worth Chasing Right Now
Our Take
Worth knowing about, not worth betting rare runes on yet.
The mechanic itself — white base plus specific runes in the Cube — is consistent across two independent community sources, and Blizzard’s own hotfix confirms at least Stealth and Enigma exist as real items in the live game. That’s enough to trust the shape of the system. It’s not enough to trust the details: the power values are formula guesses by the community’s own admission, several of the 19 recipes haven’t been independently tested live, and nobody outside Blizzard has said whether the seasonal runes survive into next season.
Casual crafting on cheap runes like Tir or Ral costs little to test. Spending a Jah or a Ber on a recipe that’s still labeled “not yet verified in game” is a bet on data that could change under a future hotfix.
