Union Level and Data Bank are the two progression systems that unlock everything in Wuthering Waves, and most new players don’t realize the Data Bank controls the quality of Echoes you can farm until they’ve already wasted stamina. This guide covers what to prioritize first in 2026, how the daily Waveplate economy works, why exploration matters more than it looks, and the combat differences Genshin players need to know before they dodge into a parry window.
TL;DR
- Union Level gates story, character ascension and world difficulty; raise it with dailies, quests and Waveplate spending
- Data Bank level directly controls Echo drop rates and maximum rarity—prioritize it early by collecting unique Echoes
- Waveplate is the stamina system: 240 cap, regenerates 1 every 6 minutes, spend it daily on character materials before farming Echoes
- Exploration gives massive Astrite income and Union EXP; open-world chests and puzzles are not filler content in this game
- Combat is action-focused with parry and dodge timing, not a stat check like Genshin—learn the windows
What Are Union Level and Data Bank in Wuthering Waves
Union Level is the progression system tied to your account in Wuthering Waves, functioning like Adventure Rank in Genshin Impact. It helps players unlock new features and challenges, and a new SOL3 Phase is unlocked every 10 Union Levels, which raises the difficulty and quality of overworld rewards. The maximum Union level is 60.
Data Bank is the Echo collection system that directly controls what quality of Echoes you can obtain. The higher the level, the higher the Drop Rate of Echoes and the higher the max absorbable Rarity of Echoes. Blue Echoes start dropping at Data Bank Level 5, Purple Echoes start dropping at Data Bank Level 9, and Yellow Echoes start dropping at Data Bank Level 15. Reaching Union Level 40 grants access to higher Data Bank levels 18+, enabling you to farm 5-star echoes.
Think of Union Level as your account progression, and Data Bank as your gear-farming unlock. One gates content, the other gates quality.
Where to Get Union EXP and Data Bank EXP in Wuthering Waves
To increase your Union Level, you need to earn Union EXP, which is primarily gained through in-game activities such as completing Main Quests and exploring the world. You can quickly obtain Union EXP through completing the Daily Activity quests, consuming Waveplates, and completing various quests. Unlocking Resonance Beacons and Resonance Nexuses as you travel around Solaris, and finding treasure among Tidal Heritages and Supply Chests all reward the player with Union EXP. Complete all daily activities to earn 300 Union EXP per 20 Activity Points, totaling 1500 EXP daily—this is the most consistent and significant source of Union EXP.
Data Bank EXP works differently. Data Bank can be levelled with Data Bank experience which can be gained by leveling up milestone phases and unlocking new Echoes using the Pangu Terminal or by unlocking higher Ranks of existing Echoes. Acquiring a higher-rarity version of an Echo provides Data Bank EXP, while duplicate Echoes of the same rarity do not. If you obtain a 4-Star Echo from a Tacet Discord that you have never collected before, you will receive Data Bank EXP not only for the 4-Star but also for the 3-Star and 2-Star versions, even if you never obtained them separately.
The key insight: Union EXP comes from doing content, Data Bank EXP comes from variety—collecting new Echoes, not grinding the same one.

Step-by-Step: Early Progression Walkthrough
Follow this sequence to get it done fast.
-
1
Finish the prologue and unlock the Guidebook
Players must complete Huanglong Chapter 1 Act 3, "Ominous Star", before unlocking the Guidebook as a permanent function, which gates daily activities and milestone tracking.
-
2
Spend all 240 Waveplates every day
Waveplate is generated at a rate of 1 per 6 minutes, you can store up to a maximum of 240, and a total of 240 Waveplate can be generated every day. Focus on character ascension materials and weapon materials before Echoes.
-
3
Complete all daily activities for 1500 Union EXP
This is time-gated and the single biggest consistent source of progression; never skip it.
-
4
Explore and unlock Resonance Beacons as you travel
Every beacon, chest and puzzle gives Union EXP, and exploration is one of the highest Astrite-per-hour activities in the game.
-
5
Defeat every world boss once for 500 Union EXP
Every world boss, including new nightmare echoes, grants 500 Union EXP for the first-time clear, even without claiming rewards; you don't need to spend Waveplate for this.
-
6
Collect new Echoes to raise Data Bank level
Use the Echo Gallery tracker in the Guidebook to hunt down unique Echoes; Echoes drop at a 20% rate, and this is the max even at Data Bank level 20, but variety matters more than grinding duplicates.
Understanding the Waveplate Stamina Economy
Waveplate is the stamina system of Wuthering Waves, primarily used to obtain resources and upgrade materials from the various resource and boss dungeons in the game. Waveplates regenerate at a steady rate of 1 every 6 minutes, totaling 240 Waveplates over a 24-hour period—the exact daily cap. You can also replenish your Waveplate by using Crystal Solvent (reward from various missions) or Astrites; Crystal Solvent is an in-game consumable that when used will give you 60 Waveplate immediately.
If you are currently at 240 Waveplates, you will begin replenishing Waveplate Crystals instead—these generate once every 12 minutes, which is twice as slow as the regular Waveplates, and essentially function as an overcapping system, meaning you are punished less if you don’t log on every day. This kind of Waveplates has a maximum of 480.
Early on, spend Waveplates on character and weapon ascension materials first. In the early game, it’s not advised to farm Echoes in Tacet Fields as you want to raise your data bank level and use stamina for other materials—leveling up your characters, weapons, and skills will take priority until you reach the endgame.
Tip
Save your Crystal Solvents for limited-time double-drop events like Bountiful Crescendo, where Waveplate efficiency doubles—using them outside events wastes value.
Why Exploration Matters More in Wuthering Waves
Exploration in Wuthering Waves is not filler content. Unlike some gacha games where open-world chests give trivial rewards, Wuthering Waves ties massive amounts of Astrite (the premium pull currency) and Union EXP to exploration. Every Resonance Beacon you unlock, every puzzle you solve, and every chest you open contributes directly to account progression and summon income.
Use the map’s left corner for exploration tasks (e.g., beacons, caskets) to ensure you’ve completed all available objectives, and use the Guidebook to track exploration progress and claim additional EXP rewards (up to 15,000 EXP per rank post-Union Level 40). The Guidebook Milestones also reward Data Bank EXP, making exploration a double-benefit activity.
For returning players who left during version 1.x or 2.x, the exploration you skipped is probably sitting on thousands of Astrite and enough Union EXP to skip several days of dailies. Clear it.
Tower of Adversity and Illusive Realm Endgame Overview
Tower of Adversity is Wuthering Waves’ equivalent to Genshin’s Spiral Abyss—a recurring combat challenge with rotating enemy lineups and reward resets. It’s time-gated content that tests your team composition, Echo builds, and combat execution. You don’t need to touch it until you’ve built at least one strong team, typically around Union Level 40 when you can farm five-star Echoes consistently.
Illusive Realm is a roguelike endgame mode where you select buffs and modifiers across multiple floors. It’s less about raw stats and more about synergizing temporary buffs with your characters’ kits. Both modes are optional for progression but offer significant Astrite income for players who can clear them.
Neither is required to enjoy the game, but both are the primary repeatable endgame activities once you’ve exhausted exploration and story content.
Combat Difference for Genshin Players: Parry and Dodge Timing
If you’re coming from Genshin Impact, Wuthering Waves combat works fundamentally differently. Wuthering Waves is action-combat with a heavy emphasis on parry windows and dodge counters, not a stat-check where you stack damage and ignore mechanics. Every enemy telegraphs attacks with visual and audio cues, and successfully dodging or parrying triggers powerful counterattacks and team-swap combos.
You cannot ignore combat mechanics by out-gearing content the same way you can in Genshin. Learn the timing. Watch enemy animations. The game rewards active defense and punishes face-tanking, even at high Union Levels. This is closer to character-action games like Devil May Cry than traditional turn-based or stat-driven gacha combat.
Note
Perfect dodges and parries are not just damage boosts—they’re core mechanics that refill energy, trigger intro skills, and enable team rotations. Ignore them and you’ll struggle even with meta teams.
What to Ignore Early in Wuthering Waves
Tacet Fields for Echo Farming
Tacet Fields unlock at Union Level 19 and give you Echoes, Echo EXP, and Tuners in exchange for spending stamina, but you should not farm them until your Data Bank is at least level 15 and you have a functioning team. Waveplate is better spent on guaranteed ascension materials early.
Perfect Echo Substats
Echoes in Wuthering Waves have random substats, and chasing perfect rolls is a trap for new players. You need functioning sets with correct main stats first. Substat optimization is endgame min-maxing, not a week-one priority. Get your characters to max level and ascension before you grind substats.
Limited Banners Before Exploring
Wuthering Waves gives you a roster of strong characters for free through the story and events, and the game is fully clearable with four-star characters. Do not pull on limited banners until you’ve explored the world and collected the free Astrite. You’ll have enough for multiple five-star pities if you clear the available content first, and you’ll make better informed decisions about which characters fit your playstyle.
New Player Priority Order: What to Do First
Our Take: Is Data Bank the Most Underrated System
Our Take
Data Bank is the single biggest early mistake new players make—most realize it gates Echo quality only after they’ve wasted stamina farming low-tier drops.
Union Level gets all the attention because it’s visible and tied to story progression, but Data Bank is the silent gate on endgame viability. You can hit Union Level 40 in a week and still be stuck with three-star Echoes if you ignored Data Bank, and no amount of grinding will fix that until you backtrack and collect the variety you skipped. The Echo pity system and weekly enhanced drop rate exist to soften the RNG, but you cannot access five-star drops at all until Data Bank 15.
The smart move is treating Data Bank like a parallel priority from day one. Every time you explore, actively hunt new Echo types using the Guidebook tracker. Every unique Echo is permanent Data Bank EXP, and the rarity-skipping mechanic means a single high-rarity drop can grant credit for all lower tiers you never collected. This is one of the few systems in gacha where variety is rewarded over repetition, and it punishes the “grind one thing forever” mindset most players bring from other games.
Wuthering Waves is one of the more generous action gachas for free-to-play income if you actually engage with exploration, but it’s also unforgiving if you skip systems and try to brute-force with pulls. The combat skill ceiling is high enough that whales cannot ignore mechanics, and that’s refreshing. If you’re returning after months away, your biggest gains are probably in the content you left on the table—clear the map before you chase banners.
