On this page

Rocket League has six hitboxes, per Epic’s official support page: Octane, Dominus, Breakout, Hybrid, Merc and Plank. Every standard car body uses one of them, and the hitbox is the only thing that changes how the car plays. This guide covers what each hitbox is, how many cars sit under each one on Epic’s official list, which hitboxes the Season 24 cars use, and how to pick one for the way you play.

TL;DR

  • There are six hitboxes: Breakout, Dominus, Hybrid, Merc, Octane and Plank. Every car has the same stats, and the hitboxes differ only in length, width and height.
  • On Epic’s support list, read 26 September 2026, Dominus has the most entries (63) and Plank has the fewest (10).
  • Fennec and Octane both use the Octane hitbox. Mantis and Paladin use Plank.
  • Season 24 Rocket Pass cars: Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 (Octane), Dominus GT 76 (Dominus), Pareto 5S (Breakout).
  • The support page names no best car and gives no dimensions; the dimension figures here are community measurements.

What Are Hitboxes in Rocket League?

Row of six different Rocket League cars parked on grass before a glowing stadium at dusk.
Illustration: Six colorful cars lined up on pitch at sunset stadium.

A hitbox is the invisible collision shape the game uses for your car. Psyonix’s support page puts it plainly: “Each car body in Rocket League uses one of six default body types, called hitboxes.” The same page states that all cars have the same stats, but each hitbox has small differences in length, width, and height. So a car’s name and looks don’t change how it plays. Two cars on the same hitbox handle the same on the pitch, whatever the model looks like.

That’s why players say “I run Octane hitbox” rather than naming a specific car. The model is cosmetic, and the hitbox is the part that touches the ball. Standardised hitboxes arrived in Patch v1.35, the Anniversary Update, according to the community Fandom wiki. Before that, every vehicle had its own properties.

The official Rocket League car hitboxes page sorts cars under six headings. Some licensed cars link to an official post, and cars without a link are non-branded Rocket League items. Entry counts as read from Epic’s support page on 26 September 2026 are given in the table below. A line with several variants, such as “Ronin/Ronin G1/Ronin GXT”, counts as one entry. The table names popular cars only; for every car on every hitbox, use Epic’s full hitbox list, which Psyonix updates as cars are added. The three Season 24 bodies in the next section weren’t on the list yet when we read it, so they are not in these counts.

Merc and Plank are the smallest groups. A 2022 Dignitas overview already described Merc as the category that contains the fewest cars in the game, back when it held only the Merc, Nomad and Battle Bus. Merc was also the last hitbox added: it arrived in Patch v1.81, the first new hitbox since v1.35, according to the Fandom wiki.

New Season 24 Cars and Their Hitboxes

Season 24, “Heads to the Streets”, went live on 23 September 2026. Psyonix’s Season 24 announcement says three new Car Bodies headline the Rocket Pass: the Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 (Octane hitbox), the Dominus GT 76 (Dominus hitbox), and the Pareto 5S (Breakout hitbox). That means all three new bodies play exactly like cars you may already own on those hitboxes.

Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50

This one uses the Octane hitbox, so it handles like the Octane and Fennec. Our guide to what Rocket League Credits buy in 2026 covers how Credits work now that trading is gone.

Dominus GT 76

Dominus hitbox, per Psyonix’s Season 24 post. The post lists it as a Rocket Pass car body. The tier it unlocks at isn’t in the text we read.

Pareto 5S

Breakout hitbox, per the same post. It’s also a Rocket Pass car body, and again the post text doesn’t give its tier.

What switching hitboxes actually costs you: nothing, if you already own a body on the hitbox you want, because the new cars share their stats with every other car. The real cost is practice time to adjust. We haven’t measured it, and it depends on how far the new shape is from the one you’re used to.

What Is the Best Car in Rocket League? It Comes Down to the Hitbox

There’s no official best car. The support page doesn’t rank cars or hitboxes, and it doesn’t publish any numbers for them. Since all cars share stats, “best car” really means “best hitbox for you”, and after that you’re choosing looks.

Psyonix publishes no hitbox dimensions. Community sites (rocketleague-help.com and strafe.com, 2025) have measured them, and the table below keeps only what those measurements agree on about the shapes, not their decimals. For your own car there is now an official way to look: since patch v2.70 (9 June 2026), Offline Freeplay can render your car’s active hitbox as an in-game overlay.

Psyonix doesn’t publish RLCS car usage; the figures you’ll find come from third parties. The most specific one we found is from the community stats account dRektRL: In June 2024 it reported the Fennec at 78.74% usage at one RLCS event. In that online season the top four cars were Fennec, Octane, Dominus and Mustang. That’s a 2024 figure; we found no count for the current season.

HitboxShape in community measurements (2025)
OctaneThe shortest, and the second tallest after Merc
DominusLong and low
BreakoutThe longest
HybridSlightly shorter and taller than Dominus
PlankLong, wide and the lowest
MercThe tallest; length and width not measured

How to Pick a Hitbox for Your Play Style

These are our reading of the community dimensions above, not Psyonix guidance. Compare shapes with shots you can repeat consistently, so your own inputs don’t blur the comparison. One more thing: if your rank has stalled, changing hitbox is rarely the fix. Decisions, rotation and consistency usually matter more, and our guide to Rocket League ranks and MMR explains how climbing works.

Ground dribbling and all-round play: Octane

Our reading: Octane is the shortest hitbox in the community figures and the second tallest after Merc, which makes it a sensible default if you don’t have a preference. It’s also where Fennec lives, so you can switch between those two looks without changing how the car plays.

Flicks and power shots: Dominus or Breakout

Our reading: if you like hitting the ball with a long, flat nose, the longer and lower shapes are worth testing. In the community data, Breakout is the longest and Dominus is long and lower than Octane. The community figures put Hybrid slightly shorter and taller than Dominus, so it is another one to test if you prefer a taller shape.

50/50s and challenges: taller hitboxes

Our reading: in the community figures, Merc is the tallest hitbox and Plank the lowest. That suggests Merc puts more body between you and the ball in a challenge, and Plank the least. Neither claim is measured in-game by us, so test both before you commit.

Step-by-Step: Testing a New Hitbox Before Ranked

Blue-yellow car with flame boost leaps toward metallic ball in open Rocket League stadium.
Illustration: Blue-yellow car boosts airborne toward ball in empty stadium arena.

Follow this sequence to get it done fast.

  1. 1

    Look up the hitbox

Find the car on Epic's hitbox support page first, since cars that look different can share a hitbox.

  2. 2

    Pick one body per hitbox

Test one car from each hitbox you're curious about, not several cars from the same one, because cars on the same hitbox play the same.

  3. 3

Turn on Hitbox Visualization in Offline Freeplay

since patch v2.70 (June 2026) Offline Freeplay can draw your car’s active hitbox as an overlay. Compare the box with the body you see: where it ends at the nose, how far it runs past the rear wheels and how high the roof sits inside it. That box, not the model, is what touches the ball. Then drive, hit and land a few jumps to feel the length and height.

  4. 4

Run the shots you rely on

Repeat your usual shots, flicks or aerials so you're comparing like for like.

  5. 5

    Play casual before ranked

Take the new hitbox into unranked matches first, and keep it only if your touches hold up under pressure.

Our Take: Does Your Hitbox Choice Matter?

Our Take

Pick a hitbox, stick with it, and choose the car for its looks.

The official rule makes this simple: six shapes, identical stats, and small differences in size. Octane-hitbox cars show up most in the pro numbers we found, but that’s a 2024 community count, not a ruling on what’s best. Our reading is that switching between hitboxes too often costs more consistency than any shape gives back.

The Season 24 cars follow the same pattern. The Golf GTI Edition 50, Dominus GT 76 and Pareto 5S are new models on three existing hitboxes, not new ways to play. Buy them if you like how they look.
