Path of Exile 3.29 Curse of the Allflame launches July 24, and the full patch notes are out. Self-cast spells, caster weapons, Unleash, Cast while Channelling and several minion archetypes gain significant buffs, while Spell Totem, Ballista Totem, mines, and Archmage all take nerfs. This breakdown covers the biggest balance winners and losers, the Mercenary change that shifts build planning, and the socket overhaul that affects every build in the game.

TL;DR

  • Self-cast spells gain major damage, cast speed and crit buffs — physical spells get higher crit, lightning spells cast faster but cost more mana, fire spells have lower costs
  • Spell Totem, Ballista Totem and mine supports all nerfed — totem and mine builds hit hard
  • Mercenaries now temporary unless you play the new Luminary Scion Ascendancy, which can hire up to 3 with swappable gear
  • All sockets now white by default; matching gem colour to socket grants +10% Quality — Chromatic Orbs shift from requirement to optimization
  • Whether your build is better or worse depends on delivery method — direct-cast gains, totems and mines lose, minions mostly gain

What Changed in PoE 3.29 Patch Notes

Patch 3.29.0 for Curse of the Allflame launches July 24 at 1 PM PDT, reworks older mechanics like Abyss, Legion and Talisman, reintroduces Mercenaries of Trarthus with a twist, flips socket colours completely, and buffs the self-cast archetype. The league mechanic is one part of the update; the equipment-socket overhaul, spell and mana rebalance, new caster-weapon rules, narrower reward sources, and removal or replacement of old crafting routes can all disrupt an existing plan. Developed by Grinding Gear Games and published by the same studio, this patch sits alongside the new Atlas Anomalies endgame system and the returning Mercenaries.

Biggest Buffs: Self-Cast Spell Overhaul

Large groups of physical, cold, fire and lightning spells receive more damage, critical strike chance, coverage or cast speed. Physical spells like Ethereal Knives, Bladefall or Blade Vortex now have much higher critical strike chance than other spells at the expense of damage, while pure lightning spells have generally higher cast speeds but cost more mana per second. Pure fire spells generally have lower mana costs and higher effectiveness of added damage.

Winter Orb and Freezing Pulse

Winter Orb received approximately 80% damage increase in Patch 3.29, a level of boost rarely seen in previous patches. Freezing Pulse has also received comprehensive numerical buffs — not only is its base damage increased, but the casting feel has also been improved through animation and projectile speed optimizations.

Arc and Lightning Spells

Arc now has a cast time of 0.6 seconds (previously 0.7), and the base mana cost has been increased by 25% at all gem levels. Arc of Surging’s beam now splits towards 6-9 additional targets (previously 4-7). Lightning abilities like Lightning Conduit and Lightning Tendrils received direct damage buffs, but lightning spells generally retain their high speed and high mana cost, requiring players to plan mana regeneration more carefully.

Caster Weapons and Gear

Staff, wand, sceptre and rune-dagger affix improvements may create strong demand for well-rolled rares. A number of “Adds Damage to Spells” modifiers found on gear have had their rolled values increased; one concrete example: a modifier that used to add up to 6 to 51 Lightning Damage to Spells now adds up to 8 to 66.

Minion Buffs

All non-Spectre minions no longer pause while attacking — the official notes call this a significant damage-per-second increase for Dominating Blow, Raised Zombies, several Golems, Summoned Raging Spirits, and Summoned Skeletons, an uptime improvement most visible against moving targets and bosses.

Biggest Nerfs: Totems, Mines and Archmage

Spell Totem, Ballista Totem, mine supports and Hierophant’s totem scaling are all reduced. Spell totems as a whole suffered reductions in damage or casting speed, and Kinetic Bolt Totems are expected to see a sharp drop in popularity because of adjustments to their associated mechanics.

Rolling Magma Levelling Nerf

Rolling Magma’s early-game base damage was reduced in Patch 3.29, meaning it may no longer be the preferred general-purpose ability for all classes during progression.

Archmage and Fanaticism

The Instruments of Zeal Notable Passive Skill now grants +3 to Maximum Fanatic Charges (previously +4), and the Fanaticism Buff now lasts for 5 seconds (previously 4) and grants 75% less Cost of Spells you cast yourself (previously 75% reduced). The Archmage support itself faces nerfs to bring it in line with other self-cast options.

Minion Pact Likely Gutted

Minion Pact Support, introduced in patch 3.28, lets a basic level 20 Raise Spectre using a Dark Marionette with roughly 20,000 life climb to roughly 36,000 with Minion Life Support, translating into approximately 1,000 flat physical damage added to whatever spell Minion Pact is supporting — before any passive tree, cluster jewel, or ascendancy scaling. The resulting Minion Pact Blade Vortex build became the single most popular skill setup in the first week of Mirage league at roughly 13% usage, and GGG banned it outright from the 3.28 Gauntlet event.

Mercenary System Change: Temporary Unless Luminary

Luminary is a brand-new third Ascendancy option for the Scion class — once ascended, you can permanently recruit a Mercenary as a full combat ally whose equipment you can freely change and upgrade, and the Mercenaries of Trarthus are returning and folding into core game content. For non-Luminary builds, Mercenaries now vanish after a number of areas instead of remaining permanent. This shifts the entire Mercenary meta: only Luminary Scions can build around sustained Mercenary investment, while everyone else treats them as temporary campaign help.

Socket Overhaul: White by Default, Colour as Optimisation

All item sockets are white by default, and a gem can be placed into any socket regardless of colour — a red, green or blue socket still has value, but it is now a bonus: a gem gains +10% Quality when its colour matches the socket. New sockets added by Jeweller’s Orbs, Orbs of Binding or the crafting bench are white, items can naturally generate red, green or blue sockets with higher item levels improving the chance, Chromatic and Tainted Chromatic Orbs force at least one non-white socket, higher item Quality improves the chance of additional non-white sockets, and new bench crafts guarantee at least two, three or four non-white sockets for 5, 20 or 75 Chromatic Orbs.

Chromatic Orbs are rarer and are now used to chase gem-Quality bonuses rather than merely fix compatibility. The question for every build is whether chasing coloured sockets for the +10% Quality bonus is worth the Chromatic Orb cost during league start.

Abyss, Legion and Talisman Reworks

The Abyss rework functions more like Abyss does in PoE 2. Abyss, Legion, Bestiary and Ultimatum become more important because key rewards are concentrated into their original mechanics. Legion Generals in Maps now have a chance to drop a new Enshrouding Crystals Currency item, which can be used on Unique Armours. The five Enshrouding Crystals drop from Legion Generals in maps, not inside the Domain of Timeless Conflict; the Domain is where the Enshrouded item is charged and transformed.

Talismans now have special Enchantment Modifiers rather than special Implicit Modifiers and are no longer Corrupted by default; Talismans have a chance to drop from Red Beasts or Bestiary Bosses, and each Talisman is tied to a specific Beast.

Is My Build Better or Worse Than Last League

The answer depends entirely on your skill delivery method. PoE 3.29 gives self-cast spells more room, makes ordinary gear upgrades less likely to fail because of colour, and restores distinct reasons to run several league mechanics, but at the same time it asks players to solve new mana, optimization, source-access, and crafting constraints. The safest launch approach is not “play whatever was buffed” — start with a build whose levelling, recovery, defences, and item sources still make sense, use white sockets to stay flexible, and delay expensive colour, corruption, Talisman, or Enshrouded-item decisions until live evidence shows what those upgrades are worth.

If you planned a self-cast spell build, you are likely better off. If you planned totems or mines, you are worse off. If you planned Archmage, you need to recalculate mana sustain. If you planned a non-Scion Mercenary build for endgame, you need to rethink your entire approach or reroll Luminary.

Step-by-Step: Auditing Your 3.29 League Starter

Follow this sequence to get it done fast.

  1. 1

    Check your delivery method

Recheck Spell Totem, Ballista Totem, Archmage, Blastchain Mine, High-Impact Mine, Charged Mines, Cast while Channelling, and Unleash if used.

  2. 2

    Rebuild caster-weapon filters

Remove deleted suffix or bench assumptions and include the new staff, spell-level, critical, and added-damage ranges.

  3. 3

    Verify every required item's source

Exclusive-source changes can alter when an SSF build comes online and where a trade build finds supply.

  4. 4

    Recalculate mana per second

Test casts per second, cost per cast, total mana per second, recovery, reservation, weapon affixes, and passive travel — a PoB damage increase that empties the mana pool during a boss phase is not a complete buff.

  5. 5

    Plan Chromatic budget

Chromatic Orbs are rarer and now used to chase gem-Quality bonuses rather than merely fix compatibility; decide whether +10% Quality is worth the cost for your build.

  6. 6

    Avoid Minion Pact

unless patch notes prove otherwise, assume it is gutted and plan an alternative.

New Gems and Ascendancy Tools

Patch 3.29 adds Pact of Ghorr (Empowering damage over time spells, grants Hunger of Ghorr buff causing Fleshrend to trigger periodically), Pact of K’tash (Empowering damaging Vaal spells, which deal more damage, have less soul gain prevention duration and refund souls on use), and Pact of Lycia (Empowering the next channelling spells you cast yourself, which deal more damage and periodically trigger lightning bolts while channelling).

Occultist gains Unhallowed Rite, a new Notable requiring either Vile Bastion or Forbidden Power, causing you to gain Spirit Infusion every second while Channelling a Spell — each stack grants 30% faster start of Energy Shield Recharge, Channelling Spells deal 10% more Damage and Channelling Spells have 20% more Cost, maximum of 5 stacks, and you lose one stack every 0.5 seconds if you have not gained a stack in the past 2 seconds. A new Arcane Conservation cluster was added to the north-east of the Witch’s starting location.

Crafting and Economy Shifts

Non-Unique Synthesised items can no longer be obtained except by corrupting Synthesis Unique items into Rare items, and the Harvest Synthesise craft is removed. Since the core mechanics of the previous league’s Mirage no longer exist, the main source of Scarabs has been cut off, and despite the doubled Scarab drop rate in Betrayal, the overall supply is still far lower than before, so the price of Scarabs in the trading market will probably rise.

Two new crafting bench options were added, unlocked by default: Reroll 3 Modifiers on a Rare Item for a cost of 3 Chaos Orbs, and Reroll a Modifier on a Rare Item for a cost of 8 Chaos Orbs. The new Pearlescent Amulet base item type has an all Elemental Resistances Implicit Modifier.

Our Take: Build Smarter, Not Just Based on Buffs

Our Take

Play what fits the new constraints, not just what got buffed on paper.

The self-cast buffs look strong, but many players will chase Winter Orb or Arc without solving the mana-per-second problem and hit a wall in yellow maps. Plan mana early for lightning casters — faster casting with 25% higher base mana cost can turn an apparent buff into an unsustainable setup. Fire spells and physical spells get cleaner wins because fire has lower costs and physical has higher base crit without the mana tax.

The totem and mine nerfs are real and will push a lot of players toward self-cast who have never solved the defences or mana recovery that totems let you ignore. If you have always played totems, do not assume you can swap to self-cast Arc on launch day without reworking your entire passive tree and gear plan. If you loved Minion Pact Blade Vortex, mourn it and move on — that level of overperformance never survives a patch cycle.

The Mercenary change is the sleeper meta shift. Only Luminary Scions can sustain Mercenary investment, which means every guide and PoB you see for Mercenary builds from last league is now Scion-only unless it explicitly accounts for temporary helpers. If you planned to level a Ranger or Marauder with a Mercenary carry, you can still do it, but the Mercenary vanishes partway through maps and you need a real endgame plan.

The socket change is the best quality-of-life shift in years. You can finally upgrade a chest or weapon without brick your build because the new one rolled the wrong colours. Chromatic Orbs become a mid-to-late optimization instead of a campaign chokepoint, and that alone makes 3.29 more forgiving for new players and SSF.

FAQ

Should I play self-cast spells in 3.29?
Self-cast spells gained significant buffs, but the answer depends on whether you can solve mana sustain. Fire and physical spells are safer bets than lightning spells, which cast faster but cost 25% more mana. If you have never played self-cast before, start with a fire spell or a build guide that includes the new Arcane Conservation or Contemplative Meditation clusters.
Are totem builds dead in 3.29?
Not dead, but significantly weaker. Spell Totem, Ballista Totem, mine supports and Hierophant's totem scaling are all reduced. Totem builds will still clear content, but they lost their efficiency edge over self-cast and will feel slower than last league.
Can I still use Mercenaries if I am not playing Scion?
Yes, but they are temporary. Mercenaries vanish after a number of areas unless you play the Luminary Scion Ascendancy, which can hire up to 3 Mercenaries with swappable gear. For non-Scions, treat Mercenaries as campaign help, not an endgame build pillar.
Do I need to reroll sockets on my gear in 3.29?
No. All item sockets are white by default, and a gem can be placed into any socket regardless of colour — a red, green or blue socket still has value as a bonus, granting +10% Quality when the colour matches the gem. Chromatic Orbs are now an optimization tool for chasing the +10% Quality bonus, not a requirement.
What happened to Minion Pact Blade Vortex?
Expected to be gutted or deleted. Minion Pact Blade Vortex became the single most popular skill setup in the first week of Mirage league at roughly 13% usage, and GGG banned it outright from the 3.28 Gauntlet event. Avoid building around it for 3.29 league start.
