Choose Regular Prestige if you want to keep your loadout available. Choose Classic if you enjoy rebuilding it and value the extra XP and rewards. Both restart your player level; the important difference is what you can use during the next climb.
This guide covers career Prestige in Modern Warfare 4. Weapon Prestige and DMZ operator progression are separate decisions. Rules were checked against Activision’s progression guide and launch notes on November 2, 2026.
TL;DR
- Regular keeps level unlocks and Create-a-Class content; Classic relocks them with permanent-unlock exceptions.
- Classic offers an XP incentive and bonus rewards. Choose it for that trade, not a promised completion time.
- You choose the path again at the next Prestige transition. Weapon and DMZ operator Prestige have separate rules.

Classic vs Regular Prestige: the comparison
After completing Level 55, open Career → Progression → Prestige. Both tracks restart your player level at 1. Compare the trade before confirming:
| Decision point | Classic Prestige | Regular Prestige |
|---|---|---|
| Player level | Restarts at 1 | Restarts at 1 |
| Level-gated loadout items | Relocked; permanent unlocks are exceptions | Retained |
| Create-a-Class progress | Reset | Retained |
| Classic XP incentive | 20% XP boost | No Classic-track bonus |
| Permanent Unlock Token | One for choosing Classic | No token for choosing Regular |
| Rewards | Shared rewards plus Classic bonuses | Shared progression rewards |
| Next Prestige transition | Choose either path again | Choose either path again |
The choice is offered again at the next Prestige transition. That does not mean you can reverse the reset you have just confirmed. Treat each transition as a decision for the next climb.

Which Prestige path should you choose?
Pick Regular for uninterrupted loadout access
Regular is our practical recommendation if you are still learning a setup, working through a weapon challenge or planning sessions around a specific loadout. Keeping your tools available can matter more than a higher XP multiplier. There is little benefit in choosing a reward you do not care about if the reset makes your next sessions less enjoyable.
Pick Classic if rebuilding is part of the appeal
Classic makes sense when you want its bonus rewards, enjoy replaying the unlock ladder and have a workable plan for early levels. Before choosing it, write down the perk, equipment or weapon your current setup depends on. If that item will be locked and you have no acceptable replacement or permanent unlock, account for that inconvenience.
Permanent Unlock Tokens: check the exceptions first
A Classic token protects one eligible level-unlock item. Activision also states that acquiring a Weapon Blueprint makes the corresponding base weapon permanently available during player leveling. Check what is already protected before spending a token.
Build a short list from your own loadout:
- Which locked item changes how the setup plays?
- Do you already have permanent access through a previous token or a blueprint?
- Could an early-unlocked substitute cover the next climb?
Our recommendation is to prioritize an unprotected item you actually rely on over one chosen solely for its late unlock level. Buying a blueprint is not required to make this decision; inspect what you already own first. This exception concerns base-weapon access during career leveling, not a guarantee about every attachment after Weapon Prestige.

How to prepare for your next Prestige
Check the reset and your available equipment before confirming.
-
1
Complete Level 55
Review the available career Prestige choice in Career → Progression → Prestige.
-
2
Record the setup you want to use
Note essential loadout items, their unlock requirements and any permanent access you already have.
-
3
Compare both tracks
Choose between Classic’s reset and bonuses and Regular’s retained loadout access for the next climb.
-
4
Check the confirmation
Verify that you are changing career Prestige and that the selected track matches your intention before accepting.
-
5
Prepare the next session
For Classic, review available loadout items and your token choice before queueing. Reassess the track at the following Prestige transition.
Rank Leveling (1–55)
Still below player Level 55? Rank Leveling covers your selected stretch of the 1–55 track. Career Prestige is a separate order. Piloted on your account.
Does 20% more XP mean 20% faster leveling?
No: a rate increase is not the same percentage as a time reduction. In a simplified example, earning 1,200 instead of 1,000 XP over the same interval means a fixed target takes 1 ÷ 1.2 of the time: approximately 16.7% less.
That is arithmetic, not a measured MW4 completion time. It assumes the same XP target, the same underlying earning rate and the full advertised bonus applying to the XP being compared. Relocked equipment, different match results and time spent rebuilding a setup can change the outcome.
The official wording does not establish a complete stacking formula with every XP token, event or reward source. Do not turn “20% XP boost” into an additive ten-Prestige calculation or a guaranteed number of hours saved.
Career, Weapon and DMZ Prestige are different
Read the name of the progression system before applying reset advice:
- Career Prestige: the Classic-versus-Regular choice covered here.
- Weapon Prestige: a separate decision for an individual weapon. Launch notes describe attachment relocking on that weapon; retaining career unlocks is not a promise that weapon prestiging keeps its attachments.
- DMZ operator progression: its own system. Use our DMZ operators guide and Hajin and FOB progression guide for that context.
Known issue to check before choosing Classic
Checked November 2, 2026: the October 26 section of Infinity Ward’s rolling launch notes lists an issue when entering Classic through DMZ menus: previously created MP classes containing relocked items can prevent new MP classes from being made until those old classes are deleted. Use the Multiplayer Prestige menu for the career transition while that warning remains relevant, and check the current official issue status first.
This is a dated issue notice, not an intended permanent rule of Classic Prestige. The inspected later entries through October 30 do not explicitly announce its resolution. Record the affected setup before deleting a class.
Our verdict
Regular is the straightforward choice when keeping your setup matters most. Classic is the choice when you want its bonuses and are happy to rebuild. Check permanent access before spending a token, and make the choice again for each climb.
If you want help completing the levels, review MW4 Prestige Leveling →. Confirm your current level, target Prestige and chosen track before ordering. This is a piloted service played on your account; compare the current options and requirements on the product page.
