Exotics in The Division 2 come from Countdown, Retaliation, Summit, weekly projects, the Season Pass and, this autumn, a Dark Zone event. This guide is updated for Year 8 Season 3, Red Horizon, live since 27 August 2026, and for Title Update Y8S3.1 of 23 September: it adds the Vertigo and Sarru exotics as rewards of the Red Moon Rising event (24 September to 3 November), a Countdown Surge with 2x Countdown Requisition from 6 to 13 October, and reconfiguration blueprints for Prima Donna and Steel & Sons ACR at Inaya. Status on 11 October 2026: the surge ends on 13 October, and Red Moon Rising ends on 3 November, the day the Echoes of Central Park DLC launches. Developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft, the game changes its loot sources every season, so below are the exotic farming routes, how targeted loot really works, and what Ubisoft hasn’t published yet.
En resumen

What Are Exotics in The Division 2?
Exotics are the highest-tier gear and weapons in The Division 2, offering unique talents and stats unavailable on any other item. Exotic (red) gear items are the most sought-after, providing the biggest buffs, stats, and distinguished unique passives. You can equip one exotic weapon and one exotic armor piece at any given time, making choosing the right weapon for your build synergy crucial. These items define endgame builds and are essential for tackling Legendary missions, Incursions, and raids. Exotics drop from various sources—targeted loot, exotic caches, specific missions, and weekly projects—but understanding the farming mechanics separates efficient players from those stuck rerolling the same cache dozens of times.
Where to Get Exotics in The Division 2
Exotics come from Countdown targeted loot, the Countdown vendor shop in The White House, and Retaliation rewards from Kill Squads or completion. You can also earn them through targeted loot from main mission reruns, Summit targeted loot, the Event shop in exchange for stars, and Priority Objectives with Exotic item rewards. Weekly projects such as The Summit, SHD Requisition, and Weekly Legendary Stronghold all grant exotic caches. Some exotics have various drop locations and drop chances: some can be target-farmed, others are random drops via exotic caches or mob drops, and others are guaranteed rewards for completing different activities. The key is understanding which method matches your goal—whether you need a specific exotic, exotic components for Expertise upgrades, or simply volume to fill out your collection.
Advertencia
Opening an exotic cache guarantees an exotic drop but not the specific exotic you want—any pool-eligible item can emerge, so expect duplicates and off-meta gear before you see your target.
Exotic Source Table: Activity, Condition, Limit
Where each named exotic in this guide comes from, with the condition and limit Ubisoft states. “Not stated” means not in Ubisoft’s posts as of 11 October 2026. Random-exotic caches are in the last rows.

Year 8 Season 3, Red Horizon: What Changed for Exotic Hunters
Red Horizon is Year 8 Season 3, live since 27 August 2026; Ubisoft hasn’t published when it ends. It adds an exotic that changes how marksman builds are put together, and it quietly changes the rules for gear farming as a whole. Both come from the same season post, and both matter before you plan a route.
Iron Will, and what it takes off your Determined build
Iron Will is a new Exotic Chest with the Resolved talent: your next body shot counts as a headshot without requiring a headshot kill first. Massive states it can be paired with Exotic MMRs, or with High-End MMRs running talents other than Determined.
That is not an addition on top of what you already run — it is a transfer. Determined now behaves like Perfect Determined: a kill from a converted headshot no longer triggers another guaranteed headshot. The body-shot chain did not disappear from the game; it moved onto the chest piece. If your marksman build leaned on Determined chaining, the chest is now the part doing that job.
Where it drops
Iron Will is a free-track reward of the Red Horizon Season Pass, so you get it by levelling the Season Pass, not by farming an activity. Ubisoft hasn’t named a second source, such as a targeted-loot slot or a vendor.
No more new Brand Sets — Named pieces instead
The broader change is a policy one. Starting with Red Horizon, Massive stops adding new Brand Sets; instead it adds more Named pieces carrying Perfect Talents or Attributes to the Brands that already exist. For farming that flips a habit: the thing worth chasing in a brand is now a Named roll inside it, not a new set to complete.
Existing brand bonuses also moved. Shock Resistance, Health, Incoming Repairs and Swap Speed were removed as Brand Set bonuses, and Protection from Elites was added.
One more exotic arrived with the season: the Fafnir exotic shotgun. Its Dragon’s Breath talent fires Dragon’s Breath shells, and each shot has a 40% chance of applying Burn. Fafnir is also on the free Season Pass track, and the premium track adds one extra copy. Both tracks include Exotic Caches: 2 on the free track, 3 on the premium one.

TU Y8S3.1: Vertigo, Sarru, Inaya Blueprints and Countdown Surge
Title Update Y8S3.1, published by Ubisoft on 23 September 2026, brings the Red Moon Rising event to the PvE Dark Zone, and two new exotics with it. Red Moon Rising runs from 24 September to 3 November 2026.
Vertigo and Sarru
| Exotic | Type and talent | What the talent does | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vertigo | Exotic GR9, Startling | When the weapon Suppresses an enemy, that enemy is Disoriented, and you and your allies get +30% Damage to Targets Out of Cover for 15s | Red Moon Rising event rewards |
| Sarru | Exotic Backpack, Decoy King | In combat the Moon cycles through 8 phases, one every 5s; your damage Amplifier starts at 5% at New Moon and grows by 5% per phase to 25% at Full Moon | Red Moon Rising event rewards |
How the event pays out: the longer you stay in the PvE Dark Zone, the more Red Moon Stacks you build, with buffs and drawbacks that grow together. Dying, leaving the PvE Dark Zone or securing contaminated loot resets the stacks. Ubisoft says agents who take on the Red Moon’s more dangerous encounters earn rewards from dedicated loot pools, including Exotics, DZ Named items, curated Named items and Prototype gear, and that Vertigo and Sarru are featured among those rewards. On 2 October the official @TheDivisionGame account on X repeated that both are in the Red Moon Rising loot pool.
Not published
Ubisoft hasn’t published drop chances for Vertigo or Sarru, or which Red Moon encounters carry them, and we haven’t measured a rate in the live game. Ubisoft also hasn’t said where the two exotics drop after the event ends on 3 November.
Countdown Surge, 6 to 13 October
Ubisoft’s wording for the event: “Head into Countdown and earn 2x Countdown Requisition throughout the event.” The update post doesn’t say what Countdown Requisition is spent on, and it doesn’t change any exotic drop rate. If your plan for the season is Countdown, 6 to 13 October is when each run earns double Requisition. As of 11 October 2026 the surge is live; it ends on 13 October.
Prima Donna and Steel & Sons ACR blueprints at Inaya
The same update added the reconfiguration blueprints for Prima Donna and Steel & Sons ACR to Inaya’s inventory. A blueprint is offered for purchase only if you own the matching item and keep it in your inventory or stash. Prima Donna is an Exotic Marksman Rifle from the Paradise Lost Incursion. Ubisoft’s post doesn’t give the blueprints’ price (checked 11 October 2026).
So the blueprint does not replace the drop: you still need one copy first. Steel & Sons ACR comes from the Broken Rain Incursion, and our Broken Rain loot rules explain how often each character gets a roll at it.
Other exotic sources this season
Red Horizon made the Toxic Dark Zone a permanent PvE Dark Zone. Its Landmark chests now have a 20% chance to drop a contaminated cache from the special Dark Zone loot pool, which includes Exotics. In the new Blackout Dark Zone, loot drops at Heroic quality, with a 20% chance of an additional contaminated item from the same pool. The season’s Climax Mission reward, the Loaded for Bear exotic gloves, is due near the end of the season; Ubisoft hasn’t given a date. Echoes of Central Park, out on 3 November, adds The Ratel, a new Exotic weapon, and a new gear set; Ubisoft hasn’t said how The Ratel drops (checked 11 October 2026). Our Echoes of Central Park explainer covers the DLC itself.

Step-by-Step: A Weekly Exotic Farm Loop
A weekly order that covers the repeatable sources. Steps 1 and 2 follow Ubisoft's weekly project notes; the rewards in steps 4 and 5 are player reports, not Ubisoft statements.
-
1
Complete Weekly SHD Requisition Project
Donate resources to control points or NPCs; the weekly project pays an Exotic Cache, a free exotic with no combat
-
2
Run 15 Summit Floors for the Weekly Cache
The Weekly Summit project asks for 15 floors on Hard or Challenging (cut from 30 in Year 5 Season 3) and pays an Exotic Cache; a controlled route for solo players
-
3
Chain Countdown Runs on Challenging
Countdown takes solo players or groups of up to eight, and its rewards include caches. Players report buying an exotic cache from the Countdown vendor after about two successful runs. From 6 to 13 October, Countdown Surge gives 2x Countdown Requisition
-
4
Farm Heroic Retaliation for Caches
Players report an Exotic Cache for every successful Heroic Retaliation clear, plus a chance at faction-specific blueprints
-
5
Check Priority Objectives Daily
Players report that Priority Objectives with an Exotic reward are short and pay out an exotic on completion, which makes them a quick daily check
-
6
Finish Full Retaliations for Raid and DZ Blueprints
Ubisoft says completing a full Retaliation gives a chance at blueprints for certain Raid and Dark Zone exclusive exotics, and defeating Kill Squads gives a chance at blueprints for rare exotics, including Climax exclusives, Capacitor and Vindicator. Ubisoft doesn’t list which raid exotics are in that pool
Exotic Farming Methods Compared
| Method | Speed | Effort | Good For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Countdown (Challenging) | About two runs per vendor exotic cache (player reports) | Low (solo or up to 8 players) | Volume farming, vendor caches; 2x Countdown Requisition from 6 to 13 October |
| Heroic Retaliation | Cache per clear (player reports) | High (Heroic difficulty) | Faction exotic blueprints from Kill Squads; Raid and DZ exotic blueprint chance on full Retaliations |
| Priority Objectives | Minutes per completion | Low (short tasks) | A short daily exotic check |
| Weekly SHD Requisition | Once per week | Minimal (donate materials) | Exotic Cache with no combat |
| Weekly Summit (15 floors) | Once per week | Medium (Hard or Challenging) | Exotic Cache, Named Item Caches, Recalibration Cache |
| Weekly Legendary Mission | Once per week | High (one Legendary Stronghold) | Exotic Cache, Optimization and Recalibration Caches |
| Red Moon Rising (PvE Dark Zone) | Until 3 November; drop chance not published | Medium to high (stacks raise risk and reward) | Vertigo and Sarru, Prototype gear, DZ Named items |
| Inaya reconfiguration blueprints | Needs one copy of the item first | Low (vendor purchase) | Prima Donna or Steel & Sons ACR you already own |
| Red Horizon Season Pass | Season-long | Low (Season Pass levels) | Iron Will and Fafnir on the free track, plus Exotic Caches on both tracks |
How Targeted Loot Really Works for Exotics
The single most misunderstood mechanic in Division 2 exotic farming is targeted loot. When setting targeted loot in any activity, you select a gear slot, not a specific item—every exotic in the general pool eligible for that slot can then drop. If you want a specific Exotic Gloves, then your targeted loot should be set to “Gloves” before launching the activity. Targeted Loot shows a specific brand or gear type currently dropping in each area, and it rotates daily.
This means if you set targeted loot to “Backpack” hoping for a specific exotic backpack, you are steering toward the backpack SLOT—not guaranteeing the exact exotic you want. Floors belong to the Summit, not Countdown: the Weekly Summit project counts floors, while Countdown is a separate mode for solo players or groups of up to eight with its own vendor. The targeted loot pool includes all exotics eligible for that slot, so expect to open multiple caches or farm many runs before the specific exotic you need appears. Volume and patience win this grind.
Consejo
Set your targeted loot to specific weapon types like Assault Rifles or Shotguns to increase exotic drop chances from hunters and bosses—don’t set it to gear sets or brand sets as they won’t drop exotics.

Exotic Rewards and What You Unlock
General Pool Exotics (Cache-Eligible)
Most exotics drop from exotic caches, targeted loot, and activity completions. Opening an exotic cache guarantees you are getting an exotic item, but the item itself will be random. These include weapons like the Chameleon assault rifle and armor pieces across all six slots: mask, chest, holster, gloves, backpack, and kneepads. There are six armor slots in The Division 2: mask, chestpiece, holster, gloves, backpack, and knee pads. General pool exotics can be farmed through Countdown, Summit, and targeted loot in the open world.
Incursion and Raid Exotics (Limited Paths)
Ouroboros is an Incursion exotic, not a raid drop. Ubisoft says it drops the same way as Prima Donna in the Paradise Lost Incursion: with a higher chance from the Incursion’s final chest, and a low chance from completing the Wright, Martinez and Johnson named boss encounters (TU Y8S2.2, 21 July 2026). Steel & Sons ACR is the Broken Rain Incursion’s exotic.
Community guides tie the Eagle Bearer, Ravenous and Regulus to the raids, Operation Dark Hours and Iron Horse, and we haven’t seen Ubisoft list them in the general exotic cache pool. The other path Ubisoft states is a blueprint, not a drop: completing a full Retaliation gives a chance to earn blueprints for certain Raid and Dark Zone exclusive exotics. Ubisoft doesn’t name which ones or publish the odds, so treat it as a long-term side reward for players who skip 8-player raids.
Exotic Components and Expertise
Exotic Components feed Expertise upgrades and Prototype Gear. Players report that taking one item to a high Grade costs dozens of them, but we could not verify a current per-Grade cost table from Ubisoft (checked 11 October 2026), so this guide no longer quotes a single figure. The sources Ubisoft states: the weekly Invasion Project pays 3 Exotic Components (Year 5 Season 3 notes), Escalation completions pay +1 Exotic Component per Escalation Tier from Tier 5 (Into the Dark notes), and dismantling Exotic items gives components.
Before you dismantle an exotic for components, check four things: whether it is in a saved loadout; whether you have already put Proficiency or Expertise into it; whether you need it to unlock a blueprint (Inaya’s reconfiguration blueprints need the item in your inventory or stash); and whether it only drops from a weekly chest or an event that is ending.
Ubisoft has said Season 4 will rework Prototype Gear, Expertise and Augments included, so that it relies less on RNG; it hasn’t given a date or numbers yet (checked 11 October 2026).
Common Misconceptions About Exotic Farming
Myth: Targeted Loot Guarantees a Specific Exotic
No. Targeted loot selects a gear slot, not a specific item—any pool-eligible exotic in that slot can drop. Setting targeted loot to “Rifle” does not guarantee a specific exotic rifle; it increases the chance any exotic rifle in the general pool will drop. You still need volume—run Countdown multiple times, open many caches, and expect duplicates before the exact exotic you want appears.
Myth: Raid Exotics Are Impossible Without Raiding
Partly. Ubisoft says completing a full Retaliation gives a chance to earn blueprints for certain Raid and Dark Zone exclusive exotics. That is a blueprint chance, not a guaranteed drop, and Ubisoft doesn’t list which raid exotics are in the pool.
Myth: You Can Farm Eagle Bearer from Countdown Caches
We haven’t seen Ubisoft list the Eagle Bearer, Ravenous or Regulus in the Countdown or general exotic cache pools, and Ouroboros has its own route in the Paradise Lost Incursion. The paths are their raids and the Retaliation blueprint chance above, so plan your route around those rather than opening general caches for them.
For advanced build optimization after you secure your exotics, see our solo builds for Legendary Strongholds guide.
Our Take: Is Exotic Farming Worth It in 2026?
Nuestra opinión
Exotic farming in Red Horizon has more fixed sources than usual, but expect significant time investment—Countdown and Retaliation offer the clearest paths, while targeted loot remains a slot-based gamble.
For Red Horizon, start with what is fixed: Iron Will and Fafnir sit on the free Season Pass track, and so do 2 Exotic Caches. Add the three weekly Exotic Caches (SHD Requisition, Weekly Summit, Weekly Legendary Mission), then use the dated windows. Red Moon Rising, until 3 November, is the only source Ubisoft names for Vertigo and Sarru, and Countdown Surge doubles Countdown Requisition from 6 to 13 October. Between them, Countdown and Retaliation are the repeatable routes; players report a vendor exotic cache after about two Countdown runs.
The grind is still real, especially for Expertise upgrades, which eat Exotic Components. If you are chasing specific exotics rather than volume, targeted loot picks a gear SLOT, not a specific item, so you will open many caches before hitting your target. For raid-exclusive exotics, the full-Retaliation blueprint chance is a path for solo players, but Ubisoft publishes no odds for it. Plan for patience, not quick wins.
