Red Moon Unleashed is The Division 2’s Halloween event, running 15 October – 3 November 2026 across all of D.C. rather than only the Dark Zone, and everyone who logs in during it gets the Bound Slasher Mask. Every number below comes from Ubisoft’s TU Y8S3.2 notes on Steam (14 October 2026) unless it is marked as our calculation.

En resumen

  • The event runs 15 October – 3 November 2026; the Bound Slasher Mask is free for logging in during it.
  • Heroic needs 10 Moon Cultist kills per Event Key, and the Daily Boost halves that for the first 150 kills each day, which works out to 30 keys from those kills (our calculation).
  • Each Revenant Bounty gives 1 key and a roll of 80% Exotic Cache or 20% featured exotic; all six complete the commendation and give the Necromancer Arm Patch.
  • Unused Event Keys are removed when the event ends on 3 November, so spend or donate them first.

What Red Moon Unleashed Is and When It Runs

Red Moon Unleashed is the second part of the Red Moon story. The first part, Red Moon Rising, was the Dark Zone event covered in our PvE Dark Zone guide. This time the Red Moon’s influence spreads into all of D.C., with light fog giving way to heavy storms and a Blood Storm. Some Hyenas, True Sons, Outcasts, Black Tusk and Underground enemies are now Moon Cultists, met in groups, with more spawning during Heavy Storms and Blood Storms.

Event Key Rates by Difficulty

Keys come from three places: Moon Cultist kills, The Necromancer and Risen Hunter, and Revenant Bounties. Kills per key depend on difficulty: Normal 14, Hard 14, Challenging 12, Heroic 10. The Daily Boost halves that requirement for your first 150 Moon Cultist kills each day, and it refreshes at a fixed 08:00 UTC. Hard gives no better rate than Normal. Fewer kills per key is not the same as more keys per hour: Heroic fights can take longer, so the best rate is the one you clear fastest.

30keys from 150 boosted Heroic kills
150boosted kills per daily reset
20%featured exotic chance per bounty

Our calculation, from the published numbers: on Heroic the boost makes a key cost 5 kills, so 150 boosted kills give 150 ÷ 5 = 30 keys. The same maths gives 25 keys on Challenging (150 ÷ 6) and 21 whole keys on Normal or Hard (150 ÷ 7, rounded down). After the boost is used up, Heroic returns to 10 kills per key, so 300 Heroic kills in a day would be 30 + 15 = 45 keys.

What it costs in time: the personal track tops out at 200 keys. The notes say your key contributions advance that track, so count the keys you donate to the Community Challenge; whether keys spent on caches also count is not stated. From Moon Cultist kills alone on Heroic, 200 keys is 1,000 kills inside the daily boost, which takes seven daily boost windows (six of 30 keys, then 20 in the seventh). The 100-key Caretaker milestone is 500 boosted kills, four boost windows. Bounty and boss keys shorten this. Ubisoft does not publish minutes per kill, so hours cannot be derived.

Step-by-Step: A Daily Event Key Routine

One day of the event, from the 08:00 UTC reset to the vendor.

  1. 1

Log in once during the event

This grants the Bound Slasher Mask to every player.

  2. 2

    Pick your difficulty

Heroic asks for the fewest Moon Cultist kills per key (10), against 14 on Normal and Hard.

  3. 3

Use the boost after the 08:00 UTC reset

The first 150 Moon Cultist kills each day need half the usual count.

  4. 4

    Pick up Revenant Bounties

Defeat Moon Cultists across D.C. for a chance to receive one, then follow it to its target.

  5. 5

    Destroy Red Moon Altars

There are 20, each destroyable once per day, resetting at 08:00 UTC.

  6. 6

Spend or donate at the event vendor

It is at the Base of Operations; open Apparel or Gear Caches or contribute to the Community Challenge before 3 November.

Six familiar enemies return with new looks. Completing any bounty grants 1 Event Key, a 50% chance at a themed Arm Patch, and either an Exotic Cache (80%) or that bounty’s featured exotic (20%). Completing all six finishes the event commendation and earns the Necromancer Arm Patch.

The notes describe a chance to pick up a bounty from Moon Cultist kills; they do not say you can choose which of the six you get. Our calculation for one specific exotic: each completion of the bounty that features it rolls 20% on its own, so you need five completions of that bounty on average, and five completions in a row without it happen about 33% of the time (0.8 to the power of 5). Completions of the other five bounties do not count toward it. The Exotic Cache result on the other 80% is a different outcome from the named weapon. Illustration: Empty alley with dog tags, shell casings, and distant Capitol dome in haze.

Killing enough Moon Cultists can attract The Necromancer, Risen Hunter and Bloody Houndsman.

The Necromancer and Risen Hunter

The Necromancer gives a guaranteed Bound Necromancer Mask plus an Exotic Cache (80%) or Sarru (20%), and one Event Key. Risen Hunter gives a guaranteed Bound Risen Hunter Mask plus an Exotic Cache (80%) or Vertigo (20%), and one Event Key.

Bloody Houndsman

Guaranteed drops are the Bloody Houndsman Mask, Gloves, Backpack, Uniform and the Bat Drone Skill VFX, plus regular Hunter loot. No Event Key drops. TU Y8S3.2 also fixed Red Moon bosses dropping regular instead of contaminated items in the PvE Dark Zone.

Necromancer Unleashed

If you play solo in West End, you risk facing Necromancer Unleashed instead of the regular Necromancer. Beating him on Heroic gives one Event Key, the guaranteed Necromancer Hive Skill VFX, and either an Exotic Cache (80%) or Ouroboros (20%). What happens in a group or on lower difficulties is not described in the notes.

What to Spend Event Keys On

At the event vendor, keys open Apparel Caches and Gear Caches or go into the Community Challenge. Gear Caches return seasonal rewards alongside Named items, Exotics and Prototype gear.

The Gear Cache shares are in the table below and add up to 100%. The Special Named slice lists Stack Broker, Lexington, Turmoil, Caretaker, Shield Splinterer, Huntsman and Hunter-Killer.

Apparel Caches

They hold 43 items, including pieces from five outfits plus weapon and gear dyes, and collecting everything unlocks The Necromancer Backpack Trophy. You can open them with gameplay keys or buy Apparel Keys for 100 Premium Credits each; purchased Apparel Keys only work on Apparel Caches.

Altars, Community Challenge and the personal track

Destroying a Red Moon Altar grants loot from the Gear Cache reward pool and may attract another group of Moon Cultists. The notes place the altars in and around D.C.’s decorated areas without a map; community-made lists exist, for example Sportskeeda’s altar locations, but they are third-party. The shared cross-platform Community Challenge unlocks The Fool’s Light Jacket at 3M keys, Pants at 10M and Lantern Mask at 20M. The personal track includes Scorpio at 20 keys and Caretaker at 100 keys, with the Sinister Spells Backpack Trophy at 200.

Advertencia

Unused Event Keys are removed when the event ends on 3 November, so spend or donate them first. Unused Apparel Keys convert back to Premium Credits at 100 per key.

Lichtenberg: Run and Gun Numbers

Lichtenberg is a new Named Classic M1A found in Gear Caches, with the talent Run and Gun: it rewards movement and headshots with a charged shot. It is a 7% slice of the Gear Cache pool, and a Prototype version is a 1% slice.

Our arithmetic: at 5 stacks per second, filling 100 stacks from zero takes 20 seconds of movement, and a PvE headshot is worth 3 seconds of that.

Also in the Update

  • Shepherd XP x3 runs 13 – 20 October 2026.
  • Expertise Surge runs 20 – 27 October and doubles upgrade materials from all sources.
  • Vanguard Overdrive runs 27 October – 3 November: +50% Reload Speed, +50% Swap Speed, +40% Hazard Protection, +20% Movement Speed, +15% Armor on Kill.
  • Escalation no longer consumes tokens when you start an activity, but you still need a balance matching the tier.

The Georgetown Dead Zone Classified Assignment also opened on 15 October. The Echoes of Central Park DLC arrives on 3 November; see our Echoes of Central Park explainer.

What the Patch Notes Do Not State

The TU Y8S3.2 notes do not give the Necromancer Unleashed spawn chance, the kill count that attracts the bosses, the key cost per cache, or exact altar locations. Recaps such as MP1st’s update 2.38 coverage repeat the same figures, with no later changes noted as of 19 October 2026.

Our Take: Is Chasing Red Moon Unleashed Worth It?

The boost makes the first 150 kills each day the part to plan around.

Our reading: Heroic gives the best published key rate, but the notes do not say how hard those kills are on your build, so match difficulty to what you can clear. If you want a specific exotic, check where it drops: the bounties are the only event source of their six featured exotics, while The Necromancer, Risen Hunter and Necromancer Unleashed roll the same 20% for Sarru, Vertigo and Ouroboros. Every one of them also pays a key. Whatever you pick, spend or donate before 3 November.
