Fast leveling in The Division 2 means understanding four distinct progression systems: character levels 1-40 — reachable by every player in Washington D.C. since the Year 6 Season 1 update, with no DLC required — the optional Warlords of New York expansion and its instant Level 30 boost, the infinite SHD Watch progression unlocked at 40, and the Expertise system that boosts every weapon and armor piece. This guide walks you through the fastest routes for each stage, from efficient story mission sequencing to endgame Heroic farming with directives that multiply your XP gains.
En resumen
- From 3 November 2026, Echoes of Central Park boosts any character below level 40 so it can start the DLC straight away; the boost covers character level, not SHD levels or Expertise (see below)
- Every player levels 1-40 in Washington D.C. — World Tiers and Gear Score were removed in Year 6 Season 1 and no DLC is needed for the cap
- Boosts skip the climb: Warlords of New York gives a Level 30 boost, and the Steam pages of Battle for Brooklyn and Echoes of Central Park each list a Level 40 boost (checked 11 October 2026)
- Community guides say to save side missions for level 20+, when each pays about a third of a level
- At level 40, XP turns into SHD XP; Heroic with as many directives as you can clear is the community’s standard (about +25% XP each)
- Character level, SHD XP, Proficiency and Countdown Requisition are four different meters; Countdown (up to 8 players) feeds SHD XP and Proficiency and pays Requisition, which is not XP
- No XP multiplier is scheduled in Title Update Y8S3.1: Countdown Surge (6–13 October) doubles Countdown Requisition, not XP

What Is Fast Leveling in The Division 2?
Fast leveling in The Division 2 refers to progressing efficiently through multiple distinct systems: Character Levels 1-40 gained through missions and combat across Washington D.C., the endless SHD Watch progression that grants stat bonuses, and the Expertise system that specializes gear categories. The real endgame begins at level 40 when you unlock your SHD Watch, making efficient progression critical for accessing seasonal content, The Summit, and high-difficulty activities. The systems stack on each other—character levels gate content access, SHD levels provide permanent stat buffs across all characters, and Expertise boosts individual item power by significant margins.
Developed by Massive Entertainment and published by Ubisoft, The Division 2 is currently running Year 8 Season 3, “Red Horizon”, live since August 27, 2026 (it replaced Year 8 Season 2, Into the Dark, which launched on June 16, 2026). As of Year 6 Season 1, World Tiers and Gear Score were removed to consolidate the endgame and allow all players to reach level 40 regardless of DLC ownership, streamlining the path but creating a steep learning curve for new agents trying to understand which leveling method applies at each stage.
Four different meters fill up as you play, and each has its own fastest route. Mixing them up is the most common reason a “fast” plan feels slow.
| Goal | When it applies | What feeds it |
|---|---|---|
| Nivel del personaje | 1 to 40 | Missions, activities, kills; boosts skip it |
| SHD XP | From level 40, no end | All XP you earn at 40 |
| Competencia | Per item type | Using that item in combat, or donating to it |
| Countdown Requisition | Countdown only | Countdown runs; 2x during Countdown Surge |
If the grind is the only part worth skipping, Boosting de The Division 2 runs the same route on your own account.
Where Fast Leveling Happens in The Division 2
Character leveling from 1 all the way to the level 40 cap happens in Washington D.C., through main story missions and side activities scattered across the open world. Since Year 6 Season 1 this route needs no expansion — the old requirement to buy Warlords of New York to pass level 30 is gone. Warlords of New York is now optional content rather than a gate: it grants a one-time Level 30 boost per character and opens the Manhattan campaign, whose main missions take a boosted character from 30 to 40. Ubisoft gives no time for that stretch; community estimates of a few hours assume main missions only, normal difficulty and no detours. The expansion covers four distinct districts—Civic Center, Two Bridges, Battery Park, and Financial District—each requiring Safe House activation before activities become visible on your map.
After level 40, XP goes into SHD Watch levels, and the gear you use in combat builds Expertise Proficiency. Each system has its own rules, covered in our SHD Watch guide y Expertise guide. Countdown is the community’s usual pick for both: it is matchmade and packed with enemies.

Echoes of Central Park (3 November 2026): The Level 40 Boost
Ubisoft’s Echoes of Central Park announcement dates the DLC for 3 November 2026 and adds a shortcut for new and returning agents: “If you’re below Level 40, you’ll get a boost, allowing you to start the DLC immediately and making sure you’re equipped to take on the challenge.” The DLC plays solo or in co-op, starts in the Upper West Side and moves into Central Park, and adds six skill variants, The Ratel exotic and a new gear set.
You do not have to wait for 3 November: Battle for Brooklyn, on sale since May 2025, lists a Level 40 boost on its Steam page too, and Warlords of New York lists a Level 30 boost.
What the boost does not cover
The post talks about character level and being equipped, nothing more. SHD Watch levels only start counting at level 40, and Expertise grows item by item, so a boost to 40 starts both at your current values; neither is mentioned. The DLC’s Steam store page lists “a level 40 boost that allows you to jump right into the Echoes of Central Park campaign” among its contents and says the DLC requires only the base game, so the boost comes with buying the DLC and Warlords of New York is not listed as a requirement. Not stated (checked 11 October 2026): which gear the boost gives. Our reading: the boost removes the 1–40 climb for the DLC, while SHD levels and Expertise, the systems that decide endgame power, remain the long part of the grind.

Step-by-Step: Fast Leveling Walkthrough
Pick your route first. Steps 2-4 are the climb to 40; steps 5-7 are the SHD XP grind after it.
-
1
Pick a route: boost, Warlords or D.C.
A Level 40 boost (Battle for Brooklyn now, Echoes of Central Park from 3 November) skips the climb. Warlords of New York gives a Level 30 boost. With no DLC, the Washington D.C. campaign takes you from 1 to 40.
-
2
No DLC: follow the D.C. main story
Main missions in Washington D.C. carry you to 40 without any expansion. Unlock each Safe House as you reach a new district so you can fast travel back.
-
3
Save side missions for level 20+
Community guides say side missions scale to your level and pay about a third of a level each, so they close gaps late in the climb.
-
4
Warlords route: finish in Manhattan
The Level 30 boost puts you in the Manhattan campaign. Activate each district's Safe House first for fast travel; the main missions there take you to 40.
-
5
At 40: Heroic with directives for SHD XP
Character XP now becomes SHD XP. Community guides put each directive at about +25% XP; use only as many as you can clear without wipes.
-
6
At 40: Countdown for SHD XP and Proficiency
Countdown matches up to 8 players. Kills feed SHD XP and the Proficiency of the items you use; Countdown Requisition is a separate vendor currency, not XP.
-
7
Watch the multiplier calendar
Ubisoft lists multiplier weeks in each title update. The last SHD XP Boost (3x SHD XP) ran 14-21 July 2026; Title Update Y8S3.1 schedules no SHD XP week, and its Dark Zone Surge (3x DZ XP) ended on 29 September.
Best Leveling Method Comparison
| Method | Speed | Effort | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 30 Boost (Warlords) | Instant | Ninguno | Alt characters, returning players |
| Level 40 Boost (Brooklyn, Echoes) | Instant | Ninguno | Skipping 1-40 entirely |
| Main Story Focus | Moderate | Low | First-time players, lore engagement |
| Heroic + 5 Directives | Very Fast | High | SHD Watch infinite progression |
| Countdown Farming | Very Fast | Moderate | SHD XP and Proficiency in one run |
| SHD XP Boost week (3x) | Extremely Fast | Moderate | SHD levels, when scheduled |
Leveling Rewards and What You Unlock
Character Level Milestones
Levels 1-30 unlock new skills, talents, and allow you to equip higher-powered gear through standard XP gains from missions and enemy kills. Reaching level 30 opens access to all base-game Strongholds and the original endgame loop, though true endgame content—Seasons, SHD Watch, and The Summit—is locked behind level 40. Gear Score and World Tiers were removed in the Year 6 Season 1 “First Rogue” update, not by any expansion, shifting the focus to individual item stats and build synergy.
SHD Watch: The Fastest Way to Level It
Level 40 unlocks the SHD Watch, an endless track whose stat bonuses are account-wide. The fastest SHD XP comes from the highest difficulty you can clear with directives active, from matchmade Countdown runs, and from SHD XP Boost weeks: the last one, in Title Update Y8S2.1, tripled SHD XP from 14 to 21 July 2026, and none is scheduled through 13 October. The point rotation, the 50-point caps and the XP per level are in SHD Watch explained.
Expertise System Benefits
Expertise raises individual weapons and gear, up to Expertise Level 30. Ubisoft’s Rise Up season post (April 2026) says reaching Level 30 got less demanding because the upgrade cost was reduced; it gives no percentages. How Proficiency, Grade and Expertise Level fit together is in The Division 2 Expertise explained.
Common Misconceptions About Fast Leveling
Myth: You Should Complete All Side Missions Immediately
Side missions offer better collective XP value than main missions due to their quantity, but timing matters. Community guides say they scale to your current level and pay about a third of a level, making them more valuable for pushing through final level gaps at 20+. Completing them too early wastes their scaled efficiency when you need smaller XP chunks to hit the next story mission threshold.
Myth: Swap Out Every Item the Moment It Hits Proficiency 10
Once an item reaches Proficiency Rank 10, more Proficiency on it adds nothing, and only items you use in combat gain Proficiency at all. That makes swapping tempting, but if the item is part of the build that keeps your clears fast, a weaker replacement can cost more SHD XP per hour than the Proficiency you gain. Swap when the replacement does not slow you down, or rotate new item types in during easier content.
Myth: Solo Play Is as Efficient as Group Farming
The Division 2 scales according to player count, spawning more enemies and awarding XP for any kill made by someone on your team—essentially free XP without additional effort beyond matchmaking. Solo play caps your kill rate and misses the shared XP mechanic that makes eight-player Countdown runs significantly faster than isolated grinding, even accounting for mission scaling difficulty.
Our Take: Is Fast Leveling Worth the Effort?
Nuestra opinión
The Division 2’s layered progression respects your time in 2026, but only if you understand which system to target at each stage.
Level boosts are the game’s best quality-of-life feature for anyone who’s already experienced the base campaign—skipping a campaign you have already played is a no-brainer for alt characters. First-time players face a tougher call: the D.C. campaign has strong environmental storytelling and introduces mechanics gradually, but Warlords’ Manhattan content is tighter and more mechanically refined. If you care about lore, play it through once; if you’re here for the looter-shooter endgame, boost and never look back.
The Heroic directive meta is grindy but honest—it rewards mechanical skill and build optimization with proportional XP gains. Five directives (about +125% XP by community figures) is legitimately challenging solo and forces you to engage with the Division 2 best solo builds ecosystem seriously. Countdown’s dual-purpose efficiency for SHD Watch and Expertise makes it the clear winner for time-limited players, though sessions Ubisoft designed to wrap in about 20 minutes can feel repetitive after dozens of runs. Multiplier weeks still matter: a 3x SHD XP week like July’s is worth planning sessions around, and title update notes announce them in advance.
