The PvE Dark Zone in The Division 2 is the Toxic Dark Zone: a Dark Zone ruleset with Rogue Protocol off and no damage between players. It arrived as a seasonal variant in Year 8 Season 2, Into the Dark, and since Red Horizon (Year 8 Season 3, live from 27 August 2026) it is a permanent part of the game. From 24 September to 3 November 2026 it also hosts Red Moon Rising, a Black Tusk event with its own loot pools and two new Exotics.

What Is the PvE Dark Zone in The Division 2?

The PvE Dark Zone is the Toxic Dark Zone, one of the rulesets the three Dark Zone maps (DZ East, DZ West and DZ South) rotate through. Rogue Protocol is disabled and Agents cannot damage each other, so the threat comes from enemy factions and a Toxicity meter rather than from other players. Massive Entertainment introduced it with Year 8 Season 2, Into the Dark (16 June 2026), as a seasonal variant tied to that season’s Global Modifier; what Red Horizon kept and dropped is listed below.

At Gamescom on 26 August Ubisoft announced that the Toxic PvE Dark Zone would become a permanent part of the game, and the Red Horizon notes set out the rules it kept. Normalization still scales players and their gear to level 40, but the PvP-specific overrides for talents, Gear Sets, skills and weapons are not active, so your build uses its PvE values against enemies. Prototype Gear stays normalized, as in Raids and Incursions.

What Changed in the Toxic Dark Zone with Red Horizon

Red Horizon kept the Toxic Dark Zone but removed the parts that belonged to Into the Dark’s seasonal modifier:

  • Sample Canisters and Surge were removed.
  • Toxicity was adjusted, and extracting your gear now clears your Toxicity level.
  • Other factions can now appear, including Black Tusk; Into the Dark built the zone around the Hyenas.
  • Landmark chests now have a 20% chance to drop a contaminated cache that uses the same special loot pool as the PvP Dark Zones: Exclusive and Raid Gear Sets, legacy DZ-exclusive weapons, Named Items and Exotics.

The Stabilization Agent extraction rule and the Season 2 Hunter drops (one Exotic Component and a 2% chance at Eagle Bearer or Ravenous) are not stated in the Red Horizon notes (checked 11 October 2026), so treat both as Season 2 details. For other exotic routes, see the Division 2 exotic farming guide; for builds that hold up outside the Dark Zone, the solo Legendary Strongholds builds guide.

If the hours are the obstacle rather than the fight itself, Boosting de The Division 2 is run hands-on by a booster from your region.

Where to Get Into the PvE Dark Zone in The Division 2

You don’t need a key or a separate purchase: the PvE Dark Zone is one of the weekly rulesets on the existing Dark Zone maps. Per the Red Horizon notes, variants rotate weekly across DZ West, East and South, with one PvE and two PvP Dark Zones available at any given time; Toxic and Balanced are active every week, while Blackout and Classic alternate. Check which map carries the Toxic ruleset this week before you head to an entrance, because the map changes with the rotation.

You can enter solo or group with up to three other Agents through the standard party system. Into the Dark described the Toxic zone as a shared space for up to 12 Agents; the Red Horizon notes do not restate that figure (checked 11 October 2026). Classified Assignments are a separate, story-focused route to Named drops: they unlock at Level 30 and are bought and launched from the Assignments tab on the map. Red Horizon has two, The District Mall Inferno (from 27 August) and The Georgetown Dead Zone (from 15 October); the Season 2 assignment at McMillan Reservoir has its own walkthrough.

Red Moon Rising in the PvE Dark Zone (Until 3 November)

Title Update Y8S3.1 (23 September 2026) made the PvE Dark Zone the stage for Red Moon Rising, which runs from 24 September to 3 November 2026. Black Tusk forces control the zone, and your SHD tech is altered. The longer you stay inside, the more Red Moon Stacks you build up, and a higher stack count brings stronger buffs and more dangerous drawbacks together. Dying, leaving the PvE Dark Zone or securing contaminated loot wipes your stacks; safehouses pause the build-up until you step back out.

The notes give no numbers for the stack buffs and drawbacks (checked 11 October 2026). What they do fix is the trade-off: every extraction banks your loot and also resets your stacks to zero.

Rewards: Vertigo, Sarru and The Recruiter’s Mask

Ubisoft says Agents who take on the Red Moon’s more dangerous encounters earn rewards from dedicated loot pools, including Exotics, DZ Named items, curated Named items and Prototype gear. Two new Exotics are featured, and the official account repeated on 2 October that both are in the Red Moon Rising loot pool (@TheDivisionGame).

ExoticTipoTalent, in short
VertigoExotic GR9Startling: Suppressed enemies are Disoriented; you and allies get +30% damage to targets out of cover for 15s
SarruExotic BackpackDecoy King: damage Amplified 5% to 25% as the Moon cycles 8 phases; a Decoy at Full Moon is Overcharged

Ubisoft has not published drop chances for either Exotic or named the encounters that carry them (checked 11 October 2026); the exotic farming guide tracks both alongside the other exotic sources. On 1 October the official account added that The Recruiter’s mask can be earned by taking him down during Red Moon Rising, until 3 November (@TheDivisionGame).

Phoebe, the XB-35 Marauder

On 5 October the official account introduced Phoebe, the XB-35 Marauder: she has rockets and energy shields, and she arrived in the Dark Zone with Red Moon Rising (@TheDivisionGame). Where she appears and what she drops are not stated in that post or in the TU Y8S3.1 notes (checked 11 October 2026).

PvE Dark Zone Farming: Which Activity for Which Loot

Pick the activity by the loot you want. Vertigo and Sarru come from Red Moon Rising until 3 November; outside the event, Toxic Dark Zone landmarks are the steady PvE route, and Classified Assignments are the route to story Named drops. Ubisoft publishes no drop chances for any of these beyond the 20% contaminated-cache chance, so the table compares effort and what each activity can drop, not speed. A full run, from checking the rotation to extraction, is laid out step by step below. Whether you are farming solo or in a squad, it is worth checking the best specialization picks for Red Horizon before long Dark Zone runs.

PvE Dark Zone Rewards and What You Unlock

Outside the event, the PvE Dark Zone pays through its landmarks. Since Red Horizon each Landmark chest in the Toxic Dark Zone has a 20% chance to drop a contaminated cache (pool listed above); like other contaminated loot it has to be extracted, and extracting also clears your Toxicity. Red Horizon also added Ortiz: Reficere, Caduceus and Nurse’s Kneepads, the Into the Dark rewards, to the special loot pool of the PvP Dark Zones, so they are no longer tied to a finished season pass.

The Steel & Sons ACR is an Incursion drop, not a Dark Zone one; its weekly drop rules and its new blueprint at Inaya are in our Broken Rain loot guide.

Common Misconceptions About the PvE Dark Zone

Myth: The PvE Ruleset Is Completely Risk-Free

Turning off player damage doesn’t remove the danger. Toxicity is still part of the zone (Red Horizon adjusted it rather than removing it), Black Tusk can now appear there, and during Red Moon Rising every step up in stacks adds drawbacks alongside the buffs. Going in under-geared can still wipe a squad with Rogue Protocol off.

Myth: The Toxic Dark Zone Ended with Into the Dark

It didn’t. Red Horizon made it a permanent PvE variant; only the Season 2 pieces, Sample Canisters and Surge, were removed.

Myth: The Old Dark Zone Rules Are Gone for Good

The Rogue-and-extraction Dark Zone is still there: Classic alternates weekly with Blackout, and Balanced runs every week next to the PvE zone.

Consejo

During Red Moon Rising, decide when you will extract before the drawbacks pile up: a safehouse pauses the build-up, but securing contaminated loot resets your stacks to zero.

Step-by-Step: A PvE Dark Zone Run from Entry to Extraction

One run from entry to extraction, based on Ubisoft's Into the Dark, Red Horizon and TU Y8S3.1 notes. Ubisoft publishes no drop chances beyond the ones quoted here.

  1. 1

    Check this week's rotation

Open the Dark Zone map and find which of DZ East, West or South runs the Toxic (PvE) ruleset this week; the map changes with the weekly rotation.

  2. 2

Bring a build for PvE values

Players and gear are normalized to level 40, but talents, Gear Sets, skills and weapons use their PvE values here. Prototype Gear stays normalized.

  3. 3

Go solo or bring up to three others

Group through the standard party system; nobody else in the zone can damage you.

  4. 4

    Clear landmarks first

Landmarks are where the loot is: Landmark Chests refresh more quickly since Into the Dark, and each one in the Toxic Dark Zone has a 20% chance to drop a contaminated cache.

  5. 5

Kill Landmark Bosses and Named enemies

Since Into the Dark they have a higher chance to drop Dark Zone Keys; the Red Horizon notes did not reverse that change.

  6. 6

    Watch your Red Moon Stacks

Until 3 November, stacks grow the longer you stay and add buffs and drawbacks together. A safehouse pauses the build-up; dying or leaving the zone wipes it.

  7. 7

    Extract the contaminated loot

Contaminated items only count once extracted. Extraction clears your Toxicity and, during Red Moon Rising, wipes your stacks, so extract when you are ready to start over.

Our Take: Is the PvE Dark Zone Worth It?

Nuestra opinión

It’s the lowest-risk way into Dark Zone loot, and until 3 November it is the only source Ubisoft names for Vertigo and Sarru.

Removing Rogue and player damage while keeping landmark loot, including since Red Horizon a shot at the PvP Dark Zone loot pool, means the mode respects your time instead of gating it behind PvP. Red Moon Rising adds a real decision to every run, push the stacks or extract, plus two new Exotics to chase. If you dropped off after Into the Dark, this is the part of the game that kept improving: the zone stayed and the seasonal chores went.
