Every guide you read right now says the same thing: grab the Le Bourgeoys Blades, pair them with Baldwin’s Golden Pistols, and coast through the Caribbean. That advice is fine. It’s also incomplete. The pistol-sword is forgiving — but forgiving is not the same as optimal for your playstyle.
If you are someone who hates constantly swapping weapons, the meta loadout makes sense. If you are someone who actually enjoys precision timing, crowd-control mayhem, or ghost runs, you have options that nobody is talking about.
The Short Answer
The pistol-sword meta exists because it removes decision-making. Its heavy attack fires built-in shots that break guard without burning pistol ammo, making it a safe pick for players who want one loadout for every situation. That’s valid.
But Resynced’s combat system rewards specialization. Rapiers kill single tough targets faster than any other weapon type. Cutlasses clear boarding actions in half the time. A stealth-heavy build skips most fights entirely. If you know what kind of content you actually enjoy, leaning into that archetype outperforms the ‘jack-of-all-trades’ approach.
The three builds below each solve a specific problem the meta loadout does not.
Why the Meta Doesn't Fit Everyone
The Pistol-Sword Trade-Off
The pistol-sword’s weakness is throughput in specific scenarios. During chain takedowns after a Perfect Parry, the rapier’s piercing heavy strike extends the chain to four enemies — and each individual hit kills faster because you are not splitting damage across multiple targets. The cutlass’s wide sweep clears groups faster than two or three pistol shots, especially in tight quarters during boarding.
When Versatility Hurts
YouTube videos will tell you the Le Bourgeoys Blades let you ‘do everything.’ Those numbers come from mid-game encounters against basic soldiers. The realistic situation during legendary ship boarding, elite fort infiltrations, or Brute-heavy sequences is different. The pistol-sword’s heavy attack delays your follow-up swing, and that pause gets you hit by a flanking enemy.
I spent way too long running the meta loadout before realizing I was dying more in crowded boarding fights than I did with a dedicated cutlass setup. The pistol-sword kept forcing me to shoot-then-swing instead of sweeping the whole group in one motion.

Build 1: The Rapier Duelist
Core Gear
- Sword Officer’s Rapiers are available early for 12,000 Reales at any General Store. They offer a four-enemy chain takedown ceiling and a piercing heavy strike that melts single targets.
- Pistol a rare pistol such as the Captain’s Wheellock Pistols provide fast draw speed for quick guard breaks on Brutes and Captains.
- Trinket Any melee damage reduction trinket keeps you alive when a flanking enemy sneaks through.
How It Plays
The rapier archetype excels in assassination missions and one-on-one duels. Your heavy strike pierces straight through enemies, making it ideal for burning down Brutes without spending pistol ammo. Perfect Parry timing is critical — the window is tight, but landing one opens a four-kill chain that clears encounters before they escalate.
The downside is crowd control. When five soldiers rush you during a fort assault, the narrow attack angle means you are picking them off one at a time instead of sweeping. Bring smoke bombs and use them aggressively to create breathing room.
Build 2: The Cutlass Brawler
Core Gear
How It Plays
This is the boarding action specialist. The cutlass heavy strike sweeps a wide arc, hitting multiple enemies in a single animation. On a packed enemy ship deck, one charged heavy can stagger three soldiers at once, opening all of them for a chain takedown.
The trade-off: duels against single elite enemies like Captains drag on because you are not piercing their guard the way a rapier would. You rely on your pistol Quick Shot to break Brute guards, which burns ammo faster. Plan your resource usage or you will find yourself out of shots mid-fight.
The cutlass fantasy is the ‘pirate captain leading the charge’ fantasy. If that’s the experience you want, this archetype delivers it better than the meta loadout.
The Brawler Verdict
Cutlass for crowds, rapier for precision. If you are boarding ships more than assassinating targets, the brawler setup is your answer.
| Slot | Weapon | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Sword | Dual Cleavers | Max-level General Store at Great Inagua (19,000 Reales) |
| Pistol | Captain Morgan's Pistols | Underwater chest near Misteriosa |
| Trinket | Templar Cross | Templar Hunt completion reward |
Build 3: The Stealth Ghost
Why This Works Now
Resynced added a dedicated crouch button, a visibility meter, and — critically — failing eavesdropping or tailing missions no longer causes instant desync. The game actually supports ghost-style play now in a way the original never did.
Core Gear
- Sword Any rapier with a four-takedown ceiling. You will rarely use it.
- Tools Prioritize Sleep Darts and Smoke Bombs over pistol ammo. The Blowpipe becomes your primary engagement tool.
- Trinket Look for anything that boosts stealth detection thresholds or smoke bomb radius.
How It Plays
The Rope Dart unlocks in Sequence 3 now — far earlier than the original’s Sequence 11. This changes everything. You can pull enemies from ledges, interrupt ranged attackers, and set up stealth kills from medium range without ever being spotted.
Eagle Vision tagging lets you track patrol routes through walls. Combined with social stealth (blending into crowds of three or more, hiring dancers as distractions, throwing money to create chaos), you can clear entire restricted zones without a single open fight.
The failure mode is obvious: get spotted in the wrong place and you are suddenly in a combat build with suboptimal weapons. Keep smoke bombs ready as an escape hatch.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Spreading crafting materials too thin Materials are scarce early. Pick one loadout archetype and fully invest before diversifying.
- Ignoring pistol holster upgrades More holsters mean more Quick Shots before reloading. This matters for every build, not just the meta.
- Forgetting the Rope Dart exists It counters enemy ranged attacks, pulls enemies into grenade blast zones, and instantly breaks guard when used mid-combo. Use it constantly.
- Treating all enemies the same Brutes require pistol Quick Shots to break guard. Captains adapt if you spam the same move. Demolitionists throw grenades you can rope-dart back at them. Know the archetypes.
The Loadout Comparison Table
The Bottom Line
Depends on what you actually enjoy. If you want to pick up one loadout and never think about it again, the pistol-sword meta is genuinely fine. If you find yourself frustrated during specific content types — dying on boarding actions, struggling with Brutes, or wishing you could ghost more missions — one of these alternatives will click better.
The rapier is precision, the cutlass is chaos, and the ghost build is for players who remember that ‘Assassin’ comes before ‘Creed’ in the title. Pick your archetype, commit to it, and stop dying to problems the meta loadout doesn’t actually solve.
