The Valheim boss order is Eikthyr, The Elder, Bonemass, Moder, Yagluth, The Queen, then Fader — seven Forsaken, one per biome, and yes, the order matters because each one hands you the specific material or station the next biome requires. This guide breaks down exactly what each boss gates, what offering its altar wants, and what the 1.0 patch notes add on top — including the eighth boss, Kall Fimbulbringer, who arrived with the Deep North on 9 September 2026.

TL;DR

  • Confirmed order: Eikthyr (Meadows) → The Elder (Black Forest) → Bonemass (Swamp) → Moder (Mountain) → Yagluth (Plains) → The Queen (Mistlands) → Fader (Ashlands)
  • Each kill unlocks a tool, key, or station — not a locked door — which is why the sequence is really about survivability, not literal access
  • Every altar wants a specific offering, from Deer Trophies for Eikthyr up to a crafted key item for The Queen
  • Valheim’s 1.0 release adds an eighth biome, the Deep North, and names its boss in the patch notes: Kall Fimbulbringer. The offering for him is not stated there

What Is the Valheim Boss Order (the Forsaken)?

The Forsaken are Valheim’s main bosses — seven through Ashlands, and an eighth in the Deep North since 1.0, and they’re the game’s actual progression system — there’s no level requirement or quest marker telling you where to go, just a chain of fights that each open the next tier of gear. You find each one by tracking down a Vegvisir runestone in a Burial Chamber or similar structure, which marks the boss’s altar on your map, then bring the required offering to summon it. Developer and publisher Iron Gate AB built the whole game around this loop, and it ties directly into other systems like Forsaken Powers (temporary buffs each boss grants on death) and the portal network, which refuses to teleport raw ore — forcing you to sail resources home and making each boss’s unlock feel earned rather than instant.

Why the Boss Order Can't Be Reshuffled

Nothing physically stops you from sailing straight to the Plains on day one — the biomes aren’t walled off. What actually enforces the order is gear survivability: each boss’s drop is the thing that makes the next biome not instantly lethal.

Early game: Eikthyr and The Elder set your metal tier

Eikthyr’s Hard Antler drop is what lets you craft the Antler Pickaxe, and without it you cannot mine Copper or Tin at all — meaning no Bronze, meaning nothing else in the game opens up. The Elder’s Swamp Key is just as blunt: it physically unlocks the Sunken Crypts where Iron actually lives, and Iron is the floor for Black Forest and Swamp-tier weapons and tools.

Mid game: Bonemass and Moder unlock detection and infrastructure

Bonemass doesn’t hand you a key, it hands you the Wishbone, a tool that reveals buried Silver deposits in the Mountains — Silver is invisible without it, so skipping Bonemass means wandering the Mountains blind. Moder’s reward is less about combat and more about infrastructure: her drop unlocks the Artisan Table, the crafting station that gates Black Metal gear and most of what you need to survive the Plains.

Late game: Yagluth, The Queen, and Fader gate visibility and access

Yagluth drops a Torn Spirit, and that is what the Wisp Fountain is built from — the Wisplight it produces is close to mandatory in the Mistlands, where fog costs you more visibility than any enemy does. His Forsaken Power is something else entirely: resistance to elemental damage. The Queen’s kill opens the route into the Ashlands, and Fader sits at the top of the Ashlands crafting tier, which is the gear you take north — the patch notes do not say he unlocks the Deep North, and we are not claiming he does.

Tip

Bosses can be re-summoned after you beat them, so if you burn through your first batch of Fuling Totems or Withered Bones and want another trophy or extra materials, you don’t need a new world — just farm the offering again and fight the same boss a second time.

Boss Offerings and the Real Time Cost of Farming Them

2Deer Trophies to summon Eikthyr
9Bell Fragments to summon Fader
8named bosses after 1.0

The offerings scale in effort the same way the fights do. Deer Trophies and Ancient Seeds are a non-issue in the first couple of in-game days — Meadows deer and Greydwarf nests are everywhere. Withered Bones and Fuling Totems are where the grind actually shows up: Fuling camps in the Plains are dangerous before you’re geared for the biome, so gathering five totems safely often means clearing an entire camp, sometimes more than one if drops are unlucky. Stretch that across a full solo run from Eikthyr to Fader — sourcing every offering, mining every metal tier, and building the stations in between — and a full solo run takes dozens of hours — how many depends on world generation, on how much you prepare, and on how many times you die on the way.

The Eighth Boss: What the 1.0 Patch Notes Do and Do Not Say

Tip

The 1.0 patch notes are published in full on Valheim’s official Steam news feed, under “Valheim 1.0 Has Arrived!”. If a claim about the Deep North is not in there, it is not confirmed — including everything written about the biome before launch day.

The Deep North shipped as Valheim’s eighth biome with 1.0 on 9 September 2026, and Iron Gate named its boss in the same patch notes: Kall Fimbulbringer. That is the part that is settled. What the notes do not give is the summoning offering, the health pool or the Forsaken Power — so anyone publishing those numbers is not quoting the studio.

What the notes do list around him is the biome itself: snow deep enough that you clear it before building, frozen seas and ponds that break underfoot, a Jotun invasion running as a world event, a grappling hook for vertical traversal, alternate versions of earlier biomes at the map’s outer edge, and idols you carry to a hidden forge to push item upgrades further. Those are the mechanics you will actually meet on the way to him.

Common Misconceptions About the Valheim Boss Order

“You have to fight bosses in the exact listed order”

You don’t, technically. Nothing locks the Black Forest gate until you kill Eikthyr — you can walk in unprepared right now. What actually happens is that skipping ahead means fighting Black Forest mobs in Meadows-tier gear, which is less “blocked” and more “a bad time.” The order is a strong recommendation the game enforces through difficulty, not a hard gate.

“Killing a boss unlocks the next biome itself”

This mixes up two different things. Boss kills unlock materials, tools, and stations — not literal biome access. The Swamp has always been sailable the moment you find it; what The Elder actually gives you is the key to the Sunken Crypts inside it, where the good loot lives. The biome was never locked, the loot inside it was.

Our Take: Is Chasing the Boss Order Worth Rushing?

Our Take

The boss order is the best progression system Valheim has, precisely because it’s optional in name only.

Rushing straight to a boss with underleveled gear is technically possible and almost always a bad trade — the fights are tuned around the tools the previous boss gave you, and skipping steps just means more deaths and more respawn runs back to your gear pile. The honest gap right now is the Deep North: it’s tempting to want a full spoiler sheet on day one, but Iron Gate clearly hasn’t published one, and neither has anyone credible covering the launch. Wait for the studio’s own word before planning gear around a boss nobody outside Iron Gate has actually fought and confirmed.

Sources and Confidence

The boss order, offerings and unlocks below are base-game mechanics, verifiable in-game. Everything about 1.0 and the Deep North comes from Iron Gate’s own patch notes rather than from launch-day coverage.

FAQ

What is the correct Valheim boss order?
Eikthyr (Meadows), The Elder (Black Forest), Bonemass (Swamp), Moder (Mountain), Yagluth (Plains), The Queen (Mistlands), then Fader (Ashlands), with an eighth boss in the Deep North added at 1.0.
How many bosses does Valheim have as of 1.0?
Seven are confirmed and named. An eighth exists in the Deep North biome added with the 1.0 release, but Iron Gate has not published its name or stats.
Do you have to beat bosses in order?
Not by any hard lock. You can travel to any biome without beating its predecessor's boss, but each boss's drop is what makes the next biome survivable, so skipping ahead just means fighting undergeared.
What does each boss actually unlock?
Metal access and crafting stations, mostly: Eikthyr gates Copper and Tin mining, The Elder gates Iron via the Sunken Crypts, Bonemass reveals Silver, Moder unlocks the Artisan Table for Black Metal, Yagluth unlocks Wisp navigation gear for the Mistlands, and The Queen opens the route into the Ashlands.
Is the Deep North boss confirmed yet?
No. The biome and its September 9, 2026 launch date are confirmed by Iron Gate, but the final boss's name, summoning offering, health, and Forsaken Power have not been officially published.
