Building in Valheim‘s Deep North works differently from every other biome because the ground itself fights you: the 1.0 patch notes list snow as a new mechanic — it piles up thick enough to block placement until it is cleared. This guide covers the two ways to clear it as of Hotfix 1.0.10, what the new 67° roof sets, Timberwood and Scalewood pieces add to the build menu, what the Frigid Kiln and Frost Foundry cost and do, and a build order for a first outpost — what to bring, where to put it, what goes up first — so the first trip north is a base and not a scouting run.
TL;DR
- Snow blocks building until cleared. Since Hotfix 1.0.10 two things clear it: landing on it (jump onto the patch, not walk across) or the Snow Shovel; punching no longer works.
- The Snow Shovel is the comfortable route, not a gate: its recipe unlocks when you pick up an Ember (Eternal Pyre, which needs Fader’s relic) and it is crafted at a level-3 Black Forge from 5 Fine Wood, 4 Flametal, 2 Embers (community-documented recipe).
- 1.0 adds four 67° roof/wall sets, a 10-piece Timber and 5-piece Decorated Timber set, a 15-piece Scalewood Wall set and the Timberwood Drawbridge — which 1.0.12 made easier to fit a Cart through (Steam build first).
- Frigid Kiln: 10 Frostcore, 20 Stone, 5 Ice, unlocked by picking up Ice — turns Ice into Liquid Frost. Frost Foundry: 10 Frostcore, 15 Iron, 20 Stone, unlocked by touching a Frostcore — casts Deep North gear and the Intricate Key. Recipes per PC Gamer’s tested guide; the patch notes are a changelog and do not list them.
- Hotfix 1.0.12 is Steam-only for now (other platforms “as soon as possible”; Switch 2 crossplay temporarily broken), and item stands can still strip durability in worlds that were already in 1.0 — back up before moving gear.
How Snow Actually Works When You Build in the Deep North

The 1.0 patch notes list this under New Mechanics in plain language: “The snow has fallen thick and deep; best clear it away before you can build!” Before you drop a foundation anywhere in the Deep North, look at the ground: a snow layer means nothing places until it is gone. Hotfix 1.0.10 (11 September, all platforms) settled how clearing works: punching no longer removes snow, and landing on snow without walking onto it now removes it — so a jump onto each patch clears a build site with no tool at all, slowly. The Snow Shovel is the fast way: its recipe unlocks when you pick up an Ember, which comes from an Eternal Pyre — placed with the Fader Relic, so in a normal playthrough it sits behind the Ashlands boss — and it is crafted at a level-3 Black Forge from 5 Fine Wood, 4 Flametal and 2 Embers (recipe from community guides such as Deltia’s Gaming and All Things How; not in the notes). Aim at the snow and swing; each hit exposes ground.
What this means for site choice: pick flat ground you can clear in one go, and if you are shovel-less, keep the footprint small and accept the jumping. Clear a margin around the planned walls, not just the floor — the notes say building only works on cleared ground, and a wall that lands on a snow edge will not place.
Tip
Advice written before 11 September about punching snow away describes the launch build. On the current build it is jump-and-land or the shovel.
The New 67° Roof Sets, Timberwood and Scalewood, Explained
1.0’s build menu grew by a lot: the notes put the total at 80+ new buildable pieces plus 5 crafting-related build pieces. Four of those are matched 67°-angle sets of four pieces each — Ashwood, Shingle Roof, Thatch Roof and Wooden — so the older families get a steeper pitch to match the new snow load. Separately, the notes list a 10-piece Timber Poles and Beams set and a 5-piece Decorated Timber set running up to 67°, and a 15-piece Scalewood Wall set with 26°, 45° and 67° angled and inverted variants. The table below lists the sets by what 1.0 added; the older 26° and 45° pieces of each family are still there.
On the Timberwood Drawbridge: the 1.0 list names a Drawbridge, a Rustic Drawbridge and a Timber Drawbridge, and Iron Gate’s own Hotfix 1.0.12 calls the piece the Timberwood Drawbridge — the same piece under two labels. After launch players reported that a Cart would not fit through it; 1.0.12 states “it’s now easier to fit the Cart through the Timberwood Drawbridge”. That fix is on the Steam build for now and is due on the other platforms in an upcoming hotfix. For everything else new in the update, the Deep North update overview covers the full content list.
| Set | Pieces added in 1.0 | Angles of the added pieces |
|---|---|---|
| Ashwood | 4 | 67° (26° and 45° pieces existed before) |
| Shingle Roof | 4 | 67° (26° and 45° pieces existed before) |
| Thatch Roof | 4 | 67° (26° and 45° pieces existed before) |
| Wooden | 4 | 67° (26° and 45° pieces existed before) |
| Decorated Timber Poles and Beams | 5 | up to 67° |
| Timber Poles and Beams | 10 | 26° / 45° / 67° |
| Scalewood Wall | 15 | 26° / 45° / 67°, left/right, inverted |
The Frigid Kiln and Frost Foundry: What's Confirmed, What Isn't

The patch notes name two new production stations, Frigid Kiln and Frost Foundry, and stop there — the notes are a changelog, not a recipe book. The recipes come from press guides written in the live game: PC Gamer’s Intricate Key walkthrough (9 September, with screenshots) gives both, and other outlets match it. Frigid Kiln: 10 Frostcore, 20 Stone, 5 Ice; the recipe appears when you pick up Ice, which you mine from the slippery ice patches with a black metal pickaxe; the kiln burns Ice into Liquid Frost and needs more Ice as fuel. Frost Foundry: 10 Frostcore, 15 Iron, 20 Stone; the recipe appears when you touch your first Frostcore in the Winding Tunnels; fed with a Cast and Liquid Frost it produces the item — the Intricate Key in about a minute, per PC Gamer. Casts come from Moulds found in the tunnels plus Bloodgold from Gammeltrolls. We have not re-measured these numbers in our own world; if a later patch changes them, the in-game recipe screen wins.
Timberwood is the other new material the base runs on: the notes list it both as a material and as plantable, so it can be grown, but give no grow time or seed source, and the piece costs for the Timber furniture families are not in the notes either. That is the one open gap here — everything else about the stations is documented, just not by Iron Gate.
| Station | Recipe (PC Gamer, 9 Sep) | Recipe unlocks when | Makes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frigid Kiln | 10 Frostcore, 20 Stone, 5 Ice | You pick up Ice (black metal pickaxe on an ice patch) | Liquid Frost from Ice; needs Ice as fuel |
| Frost Foundry | 10 Frostcore, 15 Iron, 20 Stone | You touch a Frostcore in the Winding Tunnels | Deep North gear and the Intricate Key from a Cast + Liquid Frost |

1
Pack before you sail — one list, one trip
Build and name the home-side portal before you leave; a portal only places inside a Workbench’s range, so the landing needs its own bench first. Carry: a second portal (20 Fine Wood, 10 Greydwarf Eyes, 2 Surtling Cores), a Workbench (10 Wood), a Campfire (5 Stone, 2 Wood) with about 20 Wood as fuel, a Bed (8 Wood), roughly 60 Wood for a 4×4 floor, walls and a roof (our estimate — the 26° and 45° pieces are cheapest), 40 Stone and 15 Iron for the two stations (20 Stone each; the kiln also wants 5 Ice you mine on site), a black metal pickaxe for Ice, frost protection (Frost Resistance mead or Wolf/Lox gear), and the Snow Shovel if you have Embers. Frostcore (20 for both stations) cannot be packed — it comes from the Winding Tunnels on site. That is the whole shelter-plus-stations list; everything else is the second trip.
-
2
Choose the site
Flat ground within sight of an ice patch (you slide on it — that is the Ice) and, if you plan to cast keys, near a Winding Tunnels entrance. Avoid slopes: snow on a slope is cleared piece by piece and a 67° roof needs a level footprint.
-
3
Clear the footprint plus a margin
Shovel, or jump onto each patch and land without walking; punching does nothing since 1.0.10. Clear at least one extra tile around every planned wall.
-
4
Workbench, then portal, then shelter
At the landing, clear a patch and place the Workbench first — nothing, including a portal, will place outside its range. Then the portal, named to match the home-side one you built before sailing; that is the way back, and it works the moment both ends share a name. Only then the floor of roughly 4×4 metres, walls and any roof set (26° and 45° pieces work; the 67° sets are for the look and the pitch), a Campfire or Hearth inside for warmth and the Rested buff, and a Bed to set the spawn.
-
5
First run into the tunnels
Frostcore for both stations (20) and a Mould or two. Mine 5+ Ice on the way back — picking it up unlocks the kiln, touching Frostcore unlocked the foundry.
-
6
Frigid Kiln, then Frost Foundry
Place the kiln near the ice you will keep mining, the foundry next to it so Liquid Frost travels one step. Both need their own cleared ground. Stock the kiln with Ice; it is fuel as well as input.
-
7
Outpost or base — decide now
A portal, bed, workbench and kiln is an outpost you can leave. A production base adds the foundry, storage, a Stonecutter for stone pieces and the Timber or Scalewood sets — that is the second trip, with Timberwood gathered or planted on site.
What You Need Before You Can Build in the Deep North at All
Nothing in the notes gates entry to the Deep North behind a boss: the biome arrives with a new boss, Kall Fimbulbringer, and a Jotun invasion event, but you can sail there and build the moment you can survive the cold. What progression does touch is comfort: the Snow Shovel needs Embers, Embers need an Eternal Pyre, and the Pyre needs the Fader Relic — so in a normal playthrough the shovel sits behind the Ashlands boss, while jump-clearing works for anyone. The stations need Iron (Swamp), a black metal pickaxe (Plains) and Frostcore from the Deep North’s own tunnels. For the full materials rundown — Frostcore, Ice, Bloodgold and the rest — the Deep North materials checklist lays out what to stockpile, and the boss order breakdown covers what each earlier Forsaken gates on the way north.
The honest cost in time is the tunnel run, not the building: two stations want 20 Frostcore and 40 Stone between them, and Frostcore is found overhead in the Winding Tunnels, which are full of enemies. There is no official hour count for any of this; budget the first base as two sessions — one to clear, portal and shelter, one to bring back Frostcore and stand the stations up.
Anyone who would rather not spend the evenings on it can hand Valheim boosting to our crew instead — same account, same progress, played by hand.
Common Misconceptions About Building in the Deep North
Myth: You Can Still Punch Snow Away
This worked at launch and stopped on 11 September: Hotfix 1.0.10 removed punching as a way to clear snow and made landing on snow clear it instead, alongside the Snow Shovel. Any guide describing punch-clearing is describing the launch build.
Myth: The Kiln and Foundry Recipes Are Unknown
They are not in the patch notes because patch notes are a changelog; they are documented in press guides written in the live game, with screenshots, and the outlets agree with each other. What is fair to say is that Iron Gate has not published them and a balance patch could change them — which is why the in-game recipe screen is the final word.
Myth: Every Hotfix Is on Every Platform
Hotfix 1.0.10 went to all platforms; 1.0.12 — the Forge of Potential fix, the item-stand fix for unloaded worlds, the Cart through the Timberwood Drawbridge — is Steam-only for now, with the other platforms “in an upcoming hotfix”. Iron Gate also notes that the patch could not be uploaded to Switch 2, so crossplay between Switch 2 and other platforms is temporarily unsupported (a Steam default_old beta branch is the published workaround). Read any “fixed” claim, including ours, with the build in mind.
Warning
Don’t pull high-level fish, weapons or armour off item stands without a backup save. Hotfix 1.0.12 fixes the durability-and-upgrade loss only for worlds that had not yet loaded 1.0; Iron Gate says it is still looking into a better fix for worlds already played in 1.0.
Our Take: Is Deep North Building Worth Diving Into Yet
Our Take
The pieces are plentiful and the two stations are cheap once you have Frostcore; the real constraints are the tunnel run for Frostcore and which build you are on when you read a “fixed” note.
The 67° sets and Scalewood walls are real, named and ready once the ground is cleared, and the kiln-plus-foundry pair costs 20 Frostcore, 40 Stone, 15 Iron and 5 Ice by the published recipes (10 + 10 Frostcore, 20 + 20 Stone) — a single tunnel run and a mining stop. What still deserves caution is version drift: 1.0.12 is Steam-only as we write, the item-stand bug is only half fixed, and Iron Gate has not put recipe numbers in writing, so check the recipe screen before you set out with a shopping list.
