If your last login was a few months ago, the season you remember is over. The Division 2 is on Red Horizon (Year 8, Season 3), live since 27 August 2026 — the Cleaners are back in the open world, the Dark Zone has a fourth ruleset, and the season before it, Into the Dark, has closed along with its event pass. This is for agents picking the game back up, not for new players starting from zero.
TL;DR
- The current season is Red Horizon, Year 8 Season 3, live since 27 August 2026 — not Into the Dark, which ended
- The Dark Zone now has four rulesets: Toxic is a permanent PvE variant, Blackout is new and removes stat normalisation entirely
- Toxic and Balanced run every week; Blackout and Classic alternate week to week
- Extracting now clears your Toxicity — that changed with this season
- Running right now: a Retaliation anniversary Project Chain from 8 to 22 September, and doubled Retaliation Faction Materials from 8 to 15 September
- The Dead by Daylight event pass ran 30 June to 14 July and has closed
The Short Answer
Three things matter before you queue into anything.
You are a season behind. Into the Dark — the season that rebuilt the Dark Zone around rotating rulesets — finished. Red Horizon replaced it on 27 August 2026, bringing the Cleaners into the open world in Washington D.C., a Cleaner elite squad called 95 Company, and a global modifier named Under Pressure that builds as you fight rather than on a timer.
The Dark Zone changed twice. Into the Dark introduced rotating rulesets; Red Horizon added a fourth one and settled which of them are permanent. If you last played before summer, you are two steps behind, not one.
Your old build needs checking, but not panicking about. The talent pass that shipped with Into the Dark was aimed at PvP balance. It touched a lot of talents, and some of that bleeds into PvE, but it was not a general PvE teardown — treat your loadout as something to re-check, not something to rebuild from nothing.
Not everyone has the evenings for this — The Division 2 boosting covers the same ground with someone else on the keys.
What Changed While You Were Gone
Red Horizon put the Cleaners back in the world
For the length of this season the Cleaners appear throughout the open world in Washington D.C. They take Control Points, spawn activities and start Retaliations in named zones, so they compete with whatever Black Tusk or Hyena activity was already running where you left off. A Cleaner elite kill squad, 95 Company, can show up during Retaliations.
Under Pressure is the season modifier
Instead of a timer, the season runs on a pressure gauge fed by how you fight — headshots, multi-kills and skill kills push it up, and crossing thresholds turns on stronger bonuses. It rewards staying aggressive rather than holding a corner, which is a real change of habit if your old routine was slow cover play.
The Dead by Daylight crossover has closed
The event pass ran from 30 June to 14 July 2026 and progressed through normal season XP, with no separate mode or queue. It has ended; the pass is no longer purchasable. If you saw talk of a horror crossover and assumed it was still on, it is not.
The Dark Zone Changed Twice
This is the section to read before you queue in, because it changed in two steps and the second step is the one nobody tells you about.
Into the Dark broke the Dark Zone into rotating rulesets. Red Horizon then added Blackout and settled the rotation: Toxic and Balanced are available every week, while Blackout and Classic alternate week to week. At any given moment you have one PvE Dark Zone and two PvP ones across DZ West, East and South.
Toxic is now permanent, not a seasonal experiment. Player damage is off, Rogue protocols are disabled, and the pressure comes from a Toxicity meter that punishes you for lingering rather than from other agents. The change that matters for a returning player: extracting your gear now clears your Toxicity, so an extraction run is a reset rather than just a payout.
Blackout is the opposite end. It removes stat normalisation completely, so your full build applies — SHD Watch and Expertise included. That is the uncapped Dark Zone people asked for, and it is also the one where a returning agent with a stale build will be outgunned rather than merely outplayed.
Correction worth knowing
You will see 33% and 48% quoted for Dark Zone landmark bosses. Those are Exotic Component drop chances from Challenging and Heroic landmark bosses in the PvP Dark Zone variants — crafting materials for upgrades, not a chance at an exotic weapon, and not numbers that apply to Toxic.
| Ruleset | PvP | Availability and who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Toxic (PvE) | None — player damage and Rogue off | Permanent. Solo farming and relearning routes; extraction clears Toxicity |
| Balanced | Normalised stats | Every week. Fair PvP without gear-score gaps |
| Classic | Full Rogue and extraction risk | Alternates with Blackout. The original Dark Zone tension |
| Blackout | Uncapped — no normalisation at all | Alternates with Classic. Your full build applies, SHD Watch and Expertise included |
Where to Start, by Where You Stopped
There is no single right first step — it depends on what state you left your agent in. Find your row.
| Where you stopped | Start here |
|---|---|
| Never reached endgame | Finish the campaign and your level progression first. Seasonal content assumes an endgame build; nothing below helps until you are there. |
| You have an old build | Open your loadout and read the talent tooltips rather than trusting memory. Check the talents you actually relied on, not the whole sheet. |
| You need gear | Set Targeted Loot to the slot you are missing and run the activity it points at. That is faster than farming what you remember being good. |
| You want PvP | Learn which variant is live this week. Balanced normalises stats, Blackout does not — that difference decides whether your build matters. |
| You want the story | Start with Red Horizon itself: the Cleaners’ return is the current context, and older seasonal content will still be there afterwards. |
What is actually running this week
Two things are live right now and both are time-boxed, which makes them the best reason to log in today rather than next month. A Project Chain marking Retaliation’s first anniversary runs 8 to 22 September, paying materials and caches per project with an Outfit Token at the end. Overlapping it, Retaliation Surge runs 8 to 15 September and doubles Retaliation Faction Materials from every source. If you are rebuilding a stockpile after months away, that week is worth more than any farming route.
Gear Worth Chasing Right Now
Two exotics arrived with Red Horizon, and they are the pieces worth knowing about — not the Into the Dark list you may have read elsewhere.
Fafnir — exotic shotgun
Its Dragon’s Breath talent fires incendiary shells with a 40% chance to apply Burn per shot, and amplifies weapon damage by 50% of your status effect bonus. Ubisoft adds a caveat worth knowing before you build around it: Burn application still runs into the usual status-effect diminishing returns, so in practice it can land less often than 40% suggests. It is built for the fire-and-status theme this season runs on, which means it wants a build that already stacks status damage rather than one that ignores it.
Iron Will — exotic chest
Resolved makes your next body shot count as a headshot, on a two-second cooldown in PvE and three seconds in PvP. It requires an MMR, rifle or pistol, so it is a talent you build around rather than slot in.
Determined changed, and Iron Will is why
This is the single item most likely to break a returning player’s old build. Determined now works like Perfect Determined: a kill from a converted headshot no longer triggers another guaranteed headshot, so the chain that carried a lot of marksman builds is gone. That functionality did not disappear from the game — it moved to Iron Will’s Resolved talent, which is why the exotic exists. If your old loadout leaned on Determined, this is the tooltip to read first.
Caduceus and the Into the Dark set
Caduceus, the exotic AR from last season, is still obtainable. With Red Horizon, Ortiz: Reficere, Caduceus and Nurse’s Kneepads were added to the special loot pool for the PvP Dark Zones — so they are a farm now rather than a deadline you missed.
Common Mistakes Returning Players Make
Most of the friction is not difficulty. It is assuming the game froze while you were gone.
- Reading a guide about Into the Dark and treating it as current — that season ended on 27 August
- Queuing into the Dark Zone without checking which ruleset is live this week; Blackout and Classic swap, so last week’s plan may not apply
- Expecting stat normalisation in Blackout. There is none, and a stale build feels it immediately
- Chasing the 33%/48% landmark numbers for exotic weapons — those are components, and only in the PvP variants
- Trying to catch up on every missed season at once instead of playing the current one and back-filling later
One genuine annoyance: there is no in-game changelog that flags which of your items changed in a balance pass, so you find out in a firefight. The counterweight is that Toxic is permanent now — you can farm landmarks and extract without a Rogue squad ending your run, and extraction clears the Toxicity you built up doing it.

The Bottom Line
If you just want to run missions and see the city again, log in and go — the core game has not changed shape. If you plan to touch PvP, spend the twenty minutes to check which Dark Zone variant is live and whether your build survives without normalisation, because Blackout does not forgive a stale loadout.
This is a good week to come back specifically because of the Retaliation events: the doubled materials end on 15 September and the project chain on 22 September. The season itself runs longer — a second Classified Assignment, The Georgetown Dead Zone, is scheduled for 15 October.
