The Division 2 endgame is everything that opens up once you hit the level cap and finish the main campaign: repeatable loot activities like Countdown and The Summit, the Descent survival mode, the two raids, the Dark Zone, and a rotating seasonal loop that currently runs through Year 8 Season 3, Red Horizon (live since 27 August 2026), after Year 8 Season 2, Into the Dark. This evergreen guide covers what each activity actually gives you, the fastest ways to farm gear and exotics, and where the current season fits into all of it.
TL;DR
- Endgame starts at level 40, which every player can reach in Washington D.C. without DLC; level boosts skip the climb.
- Countdown and The Summit let you pick targeted loot; Descent is a roguelike mode where your farmed gear doesn’t carry in; raids are the sure route to raid gear, which the Dark Zone’s special loot pool can also drop.
- Red Horizon made the PvE Toxic Dark Zone permanent and added Blackout, an uncapped PvP Dark Zone; the Red Moon Rising event runs in the PvE Dark Zone until 3 November.
- Exotics come from guaranteed sources (raids, expeditions, the free Season Pass track) and RNG drops (Exotic Caches, event loot pools, targeted loot, the Broken Rain Incursion).
- Full endgame gearing, including raid clears and a few chase exotics, is a long-haul grind, not a weekend project.

What Are the Main Endgame Activities in The Division 2?
Once you’re geared and leveled, the game funnels you toward a handful of repeatable systems instead of new story missions. Each one rewards a different playstyle, from fast solo loops to full eight-player coordination.
SHD levels sit underneath all of this as the endless progression track that keeps handing out perk points after you cap your character, and it pairs directly with the specialization you pick, since specialization signature weapons and perks scale a lot of endgame builds.
This page is the hub; each activity has its own guide: Descent, Broken Rain, PvE Dark Zone, exotic farming, SHD Watch and Expertise.
| Activity | Why go | Requirements | Rewards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Countdown | Fast matchmade loot runs | Endgame; up to 8 players | Chosen targeted loot, Countdown Requisition |
| The Summit | Floor-by-floor climb | Endgame; solo or group | Chosen targeted loot |
| Descent | Roguelike runs, solo-friendly | Your farmed gear does not carry in | See our Descent guide |
| Raids: Dark Hours, Iron Horse | Raid gear sets and exotics | Coordinated 8-player group | Raid exotics and raid gear sets |
| Broken Rain Incursion | Steel & Sons ACR | Group; Prototype stats normalized | ACR from weekly chest or bosses |
| Escalation | Prototype Gear | Escalation Tokens per run | Prototype items, better at high tiers |
| Toxic Dark Zone (PvE) | Dark Zone loot without PvP | Normalized to level 40 | 20% contaminated caches at landmarks |
| Blackout Dark Zone | Uncapped PvP | Full build; Rogue Protocol on | Heroic loot, 20% contaminated item |
Anyone who would rather not spend the evenings on it can hand The Division 2 boosting to our crew instead — same account, same progress, played by hand.
Where to Get Endgame Gear and Exotics in The Division 2
Gear sources split into three tiers. Guaranteed unlocks come from finishing specific content once, like an expedition’s final chest or a raid boss’s fixed drop table. RNG drops come from Exotic Caches, world bosses and Hunters, and can pop out of general play once you’ve unlocked the item’s drop flag. Mode-locked rewards, mostly raid and incursion exclusives, don’t come from targeted loot. The exception is the Dark Zone’s special loot pool: per the Red Horizon notes, it includes Exclusive and Raid Gear Sets, legacy DZ-exclusive weapons, Named items and Exotics, and it drops in the PvP Dark Zones and from Toxic Dark Zone landmark chests. Developer Massive Entertainment and publisher Ubisoft have kept this structure largely intact across seasons, just adding new items to each bucket.
| Source | What You Get | Requirement | Who It Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Countdown / Summit targeted loot | Named weapons, gear, some exotics | Level cap, matchmaking or a group | Players who want to farm a specific slot |
| Raids (Dark Hours, Iron Horse) | Raid-exclusive exotics and gear sets | Full 8-player coordinated group | Players chasing best-in-slot items |
| Expeditions (e.g. Kenly College) | Complete all three investigation areas, then claim from the final reward chest | Story/exploration completion | Solo players who dislike RNG |
| Red Moon Rising (to 3 Nov) | Vertigo, Sarru, DZ Named, Prototype | PvE Dark Zone access | Dark Zone regulars |
| Broken Rain Incursion | Steel & Sons ACR exotic | Weekly chest roll or boss drops | Players chasing a mode-exclusive exotic |

Step-by-Step: Getting Into Division 2 Endgame
Follow this sequence to get it done fast.
-
1
Finish the main campaign
clear the base story missions to hit level 40, or use a level boost from a DLC that includes one, to open up endgame progression systems.
-
2
Push your character's power
spend time on SHD levels and gear upgrades so you're not walking into Countdown or Escalation underpowered.
-
3
Run Countdown and The Summit
these are the fastest matchmade loops for picking exactly the loot slot you're missing.
-
4
Try Descent solo or in a small group
it's solo-friendly, and since every run starts from a basic loadout, your farmed gear doesn't help there; treat it as practice for build decisions.
-
5
Push Escalation tiers for Prototype Gear
Escalation runs cost tokens and drop Prototype Gear, with better chances and stronger rolls at higher tiers.
-
6
Form a raid group
Operation Dark Hours and Operation Iron Horse both need a coordinated eight-player squad but hold the best exclusive rewards in the game.
-
7
Jump into the current season
Year 8 Season 3, Red Horizon, runs on the Under Pressure modifiers, Retaliations against the Cleaners, and the Red Moon Rising event in the PvE Dark Zone until 3 November.
Best Division 2 Endgame Farming Methods
Tip
If you’re solo or only play with two or three friends, lean on Descent and The Summit first. Raids and Countdown’s 8-player matchmaking are where the group-size wall actually bites.
| Method | Speed | Effort | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Countdown targeted loot | Fast (sessions of about 20 minutes) | Low, matchmade | Filling a specific weapon or gear slot |
| The Summit targeted floors | Medium | Low to medium | Solo players who want control over drops |
| Descent loops | Medium | Low (solo-friendly) | Solo practice; farmed gear not used |
| Raid full clears | Slow | High, needs 8 coordinated players | Chase exotics and raid gear sets |
| Toxic Dark Zone landmarks | Medium | Medium, no PvP risk | 20% contaminated caches, incl. raid and exclusive sets |
Endgame Rewards and What You Unlock
Where raid loot shows up outside raids
Raid gear sets don’t come from targeted loot or vendors, but Red Horizon put them in the Dark Zone’s special loot pool: Toxic Dark Zone landmark chests have a 20% chance at a contaminated cache from that pool, and Blackout adds a 20% chance at an extra contaminated item. The notes don’t list which raid exotics are in the pool, so for a specific raid exotic the raid is still the sure route, which is why raid groups stay in demand.
Why seasonal exotics come back
Items tied to a season, like Underboss, the SMG from the Into the Dark climax mission, are easiest to get while that season runs, but they resurface. Since Red Horizon, Inaya sells blueprints for Underboss, Caduceus, Nurse’s Kneepads, Whiplash, Agitator and Investor if you own the item, and Caduceus and Nurse’s Kneepads joined Targeted Loot. Title Update Y8S3.1 added reconfiguration blueprints for Prima Donna and Steel & Sons ACR to Inaya on the same terms.
| Reward | How You Get It | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Exotic weapons | Raids, expeditions, Exotic Caches, targeted loot | Build-defining perks that regular gear can't match |
| Raid gear sets | Raid bosses; Dark Zone special loot pool | Most reliable inside the raids |
| Seasonal exotics (e.g. Fafnir, Vertigo) | Season Pass track, seasonal events | New each season; older ones return via Inaya blueprints |
| SHD tech and watch upgrades | SHD leveling | Long-term power creep beyond the level cap |
| Expertise Grades | Proficiency plus materials | Max Expertise is required for Prototype conversion |
What Changes Next: Echoes of Central Park, Crossplay and Season 4
Three announced changes reach the endgame before Year 8 is over. Echoes of Central Park launches on 3 November 2026 with what Ubisoft calls a replayable endgame in Central Park, where how well you do in encounters brings exclusive rewards or a disadvantage going forward; our Echoes of Central Park preview has the rest. Crossplay launches in November: every player moves to the crossplay environment, it is on by default, and leaderboards reset (Gamescom panel, 26 August 2026). Season 4 will rework Prototype Gear to rely less on RNG, touching Expertise and Augments, and give Escalations more control over challenge and rewards; no date is given as of 11 October 2026.
Common Misconceptions About Division 2 Endgame
Myth: you need every DLC to reach endgame
Access to core endgame modes like Countdown was opened up to all level 40 players regardless of whether they own the expansion content, so the paywall myth is outdated.
Myth: exotics only drop from raids
Plenty of exotics circulate through general targeted loot, Exotic Caches and open-world activities once you’ve unlocked them the first time; raids and Descent gate a smaller list of mode-exclusive items, not the whole exotic pool.
Myth: the Dark Zone is pure PvP now
Since Red Horizon, one PvE and two PvP Dark Zones are open at any time, rotating weekly across DZ West, East and South: Toxic (PvE) and Balanced every week, Blackout and Classic alternating. You can farm Dark Zone loot without ever fighting another agent; our PvE Dark Zone guide covers how.
Warning
Season-specific numbers like vendor token costs and exotic drop odds get tuned between PTS and live patches. Treat any specific percentage or price you see for the current season as likely to shift and check the in-game vendor before committing resources.
Our Take: Is The Division 2 Endgame Worth It?
Our Take
Worth it if you like gear-chasing loops, rough if you only have a couple hours a week.
The spread of activities is genuinely wide, Countdown and The Summit give you fast, controllable loot, and Descent is one of the better solo-friendly modes in the genre. The catch is that the surest route to raid gear sets and a handful of chase exotics sits behind an eight-player coordination requirement that a lot of players simply can’t clear casually. Add seasonal events with hard end dates, like Red Moon Rising until 3 November, and you’ve got a game that rewards consistency more than raw skill.
