Palworld 1.0 launched today (July 10, 2026) and introduced two brand-new systems for powering up your Pals: Awakening and Mutation. This is the biggest update since launch, adding the World Tree endgame zone, Sunreach sky island, 72 new Pals (287 total), and these two new strengthening mechanics. If you want to push your Pals to their absolute limits in the new endgame content, understanding both systems is non-negotiable.
Awakening requires players to use Awakening Gems on Pals of the same elemental type to provide a significant boost to their overall stats. Awakened Pals also receive a new aesthetic where they are clad in a golden glow. Mutation works differently—breeding now has a low chance of producing a Pal stronger than the normal breeding result, and Pals born from mutated eggs have higher stats and a unique passive skill.
TL;DR
- Awakening uses Radiant Gems from the World Tree to boost an existing Pal’s stats
- Mutation is RNG-based breeding that can produce stronger offspring with exclusive passives
- Awakening works on any Pal you already own; Mutation requires a full breeding setup
- Use special cakes (Deluxe Vegetable Cake, Special Cake) to increase Mutation odds
- For a maxed Pal: breed for Mutation first, then Awaken the result
Where to Get Awakening Materials in Palworld
The materials for Awakening come from the World Tree, the newly opened mystical area that serves as Palworld 1.0’s primary endgame zone. You need to gather Radiant Gems hidden throughout the World Tree’s depths, and Awakening Gems can generally be made by combining Radiant Gems from each element. This means you must explore extensively within the World Tree—expect to find different elemental variants of Radiant Gems scattered across its various regions.
Awakening requires the Gem to match the Pal’s elemental type, so if you want to Awaken a Fire-type Pal, you need the appropriate Fire-element Radiant Gems combined into an Awakening Gem. The World Tree is gated behind story progression, so you will need to advance through Palworld 1.0’s revamped main missions to access it. Once there, the area is dangerous but packed with materials you cannot find anywhere else on Palpagos.
How to Trigger Mutation Through Breeding
Mutation occurs when a Pal is born from a mutated egg, with the Pal having higher stats and a more impressive passive skill compared to the rest of its kin. Mutation has a low probability of occurring, given the advantages it provides. Unlike Awakening, this is not something you can force on an existing Pal—you must breed for it.
The base chance for Mutation appears to be quite low (Pocketpair has not published exact rates yet). However, you can increase the chances of Mutation occurring by feeding the parent Pals cake, as there are now new Cakes with special effects that can increase the possibility of Mutated Eggs being born. The new cakes added in 1.0 have specific effects:
- Mushroom Cake — Slightly increases the likelihood that newly born Pals will have higher stats
- Vegetable Cake — Produces two Pal Eggs at once
- Deluxe Vegetable Cake — Increases the likelihood of mutations and makes stat growth more likely
- Special Cake — Increases the chance of inheriting multiple passive skills from Pal parents
Tip
Deluxe Vegetable Cake is your best friend for Mutation hunting. Pair it with Vegetable Cake to double your eggs and increase your odds per breeding cycle.

Best Methods for Farming Awakening and Mutation Materials
For Awakening, there is no shortcut—you must explore the World Tree and farm Radiant Gems directly. For Mutation, setting up an automated Cake production line at your base (with new Pals that handle base tasks efficiently) lets you run breeding cycles in the background while you tackle other content.
| Method | Speed | Effort | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| World Tree Exploration (Radiant Gems) | Moderate | High | Players ready for endgame content |
| Automated Breeding Farm (Mutation) | Slow | Low (once set up) | Passive grinding while doing other content |
| Deluxe Vegetable Cake Breeding | Moderate | Moderate | Active Mutation hunting |
| Co-op World Tree Runs | Fast | High | Multiplayer groups clearing efficiently |
Step-by-Step: Optimal Path to a Maxed Pal

Awakening vs. Mutation Rewards: What Each System Unlocks
What Awakening Gives You
Awakening provides a significant boost on overall stats and Awakened Pals receive a new aesthetic where they are clad in a golden glow. When viewing your Pals in the Party tab of your menu, you can also see that their levels glow—this signifies that the Pals have been Awakened. The stat boost applies across the board, making an already-strong Pal noticeably more powerful in combat, base work, and partner skills.
What Mutation Gives You
Pals born from mutated eggs have higher stats and a unique passive skill. This means Mutation is not just about raw numbers—you get access to exclusive passive abilities that normal Pals cannot have. These unique passives can define builds and make Mutated Pals particularly valuable for specific roles.
Stacking Both Systems
The real power comes from combining them. A Mutated Pal starts with better base stats and a unique passive, and then Awakening pushes those already-elevated stats higher while adding the golden visual effect. Mutations will make Pal breeding more involved and exciting for players who want to raise the ultimate Pal.
Common Misconceptions About Awakening and Mutation
Myth: Awakening Works on Any Pal Without Matching Elements
Incorrect. Awakening requires players to use Awakening Gems on Pals of the same elemental type. You cannot use a Fire Awakening Gem on a Water-type Pal. This means you need to farm specific elemental Radiant Gems for each Pal you want to Awaken.
Myth: Mutation Replaces the Old Pal Soul System
Also incorrect. Pal status details now display bonus values provided by Souls and Awakening. Pal Souls still exist and still enhance Pals at the Statue of Power. Mutation and Awakening are additional systems layered on top of the existing progression, not replacements.
Myth: You Can Force Mutation by Using Specific Parent Combinations
There is no confirmed breeding combination that guarantees Mutation. Mutation has a low probability of occurring, and while Deluxe Vegetable Cake increases your odds, it remains an RNG-based outcome. Plan for many breeding cycles before you see results.
Warning
Do not Awaken a Pal before checking if you want to breed it. Awakening is applied to a specific individual Pal, not passed down through breeding. Awaken only after you have your final Mutated offspring.

Our Take: Are Awakening and Mutation Worth the Grind?
Our Take
Both systems are worth engaging with, but Mutation is the higher-skill, higher-reward path for serious endgame players.
Pocketpair (official Palworld site) designed these systems to give endgame players something meaningful to chase after the level cap increased to 80. Awakening is straightforward—explore the World Tree, collect gems, apply them. It is a reasonable grind with a guaranteed outcome.
Mutation is where things get interesting and frustrating. The RNG element means you might breed dozens of eggs before seeing a single Mutated result, and even then, you might not get the unique passive you wanted. But the payoff—a Pal with inherently better stats and an exclusive passive—creates real differentiation between builds. If you want your Pals to stand out in the new PvP mode or reliably clear World Tree bosses, Mutation is where the min-maxing lives.
Honestly, the smartest approach is to run breeding in the background while progressing through 1.0’s story content. By the time you reach the World Tree naturally, you should have a few Mutated Pals ready to receive Awakening. Trying to rush either system in isolation will burn you out faster than the content warrants.
