My first two hours in Black Flag Resynced ended with three sunken ships, a failed assassination that escalated into a full boss fight, and zero progress on actual upgrades. I was playing the 2013 version in my head while the remake punished every wrong assumption.

This is not the same game. Ubisoft Singapore rebuilt combat from scratch, changed how upgrades work, added new enemy types, and locked major naval abilities behind Officer quests that are easy to miss. Veterans will struggle more than newcomers because muscle memory actively works against you.

The Short Answer

The first ten hours punish two habits: treating combat like the original’s counter-kill rhythm, and ignoring the Jackdaw’s upgrade requirements. Both will get you killed repeatedly.

If you played the 2013 version, unlearn everything. Combat now runs on a defense-break loop—enemies have a defense bar you need to drain before finishers work. Perfect Parries (timed presses right as an enemy flashes) trigger Hidden Blade takedowns and let you chain across up to four enemies. Mashing attack just gets you surrounded and shot.

Ship upgrades moved from the Captain’s Cabin to Harbourmasters at ports. You cannot upgrade mid-voyage anymore. And Officer quests unlock abilities that fundamentally change naval combat, but the game barely flags them. Miss those, and the mid-game becomes a grind.

Combat Assumptions That Get You Killed

The Counter-Kill Era Is Over

The original rewarded patience: wait for the attack indicator, press counter, watch Edward delete an enemy. That rhythm is gone. Resynced rebuilds fighting around parries and defense breaks, closer to what Mirage and Shadows introduced.

Here is the new loop: enemies carry a defense bar. Your attacks drain it. Once broken, you can execute a Takedown. Landing a Perfect Parry—timed exactly when the enemy flashes—skips the defense-breaking entirely and opens a chain kill across nearby enemies. Miss the timing, and you take damage instead of dealing it.

Enemies Adapt to Repetition

This caught me off guard. If you spam the same attack—kicking over and over, for instance—enemies will start dodging or countering you. The game reads patterns. Rotate between light attacks, heavy attacks, pistol shots, smoke bombs, and the Rope Dart. Stick to one move, and the crowd punishes you.

  • Soldiers Basic grunts with weak defense bars—chaining takedowns through them is easy once you land one parry.
  • Agiles Dagger-wielding enemies who dodge, vault, and tackle. They punish button-mashing harder than anyone. Slow down and wait for openings.
  • Brutes Cannot be parried at all. Their attacks go through blocks. Dodge is your only defense—learn the animation tells or you eat grenades.
  • Demolitionists New to Resynced. Blunderbuss fire in close range, grenades at distance. They exist to flush you out of comfortable positions.

One detail the game never explains: parries are omnidirectional. You do not need to face the attacker. Press the button at the right time, and Edward defends regardless of direction.

The Jackdaw Upgrade Trap

Captain’s Cabin Upgrades Are Gone

Veterans expecting to pop open the Captain’s Cabin and upgrade mid-voyage will stare at nothing. Resynced moved all ship upgrades to Harbourmasters at friendly ports. No exceptions. If you need an armor upgrade before a tough fight, you have to sail to port first.

This matters because early naval combat is brutal. The Jackdaw starts as a basic brig that struggles against anything bigger than a schooner. Without hull and cannon upgrades, mid-game ships will sink you repeatedly.

What to Prioritize First

Higher-tier upgrades require plans from shipwrecks and treasure maps. You cannot just buy everything at the Harbourmaster—exploration is mandatory.

Officer Quests You Should Not Skip

Resynced adds three recruitable Officers who grant permanent naval abilities. These are easy to miss because the game does not push them. After completing This Old Cove in Sequence 4, the Officer markers appear on the world map. Ignore them, and you are fighting mid-game naval battles without abilities that change everything.

Lucy Baldwin — Perfect Brace

Bracing just before an attack hits massively reduces incoming damage. This is the difference between surviving a multi-ship ambush and sinking. Recruit her first.

The Padre — Ram Dash

High-speed ramming with massive damage. The cooldown is long, but one good Ram Dash can cripple a Man-o’-War before broadsides even start. He also joins boarding parties as an active fighter.

Tobias ‘Deadman’ Smith — Extra Salvo

A late-game unlock (Sequence 11+) that adds Extra Salvo for double broadside shots. His extended questline later unlocks the Cohort Mortar. Worth pursuing after the other two, but genuinely strong against forts and legendary ships.

Detour for Lucy and the Padre the moment This Old Cove ends. Together, the Sequence 4 Officers take under an hour to recruit and permanently reshape naval combat.

Side Content Before Great Inagua: A Waste of Time

The biggest trap is getting distracted by Cape Bonavista’s treasure chests or Havana’s side activities right out of the gate. Resist that urge. Push the main story until you unlock Great Inagua, which opens the Harbourmaster upgrade system, Officer recruitment, and your personal hideout.

Without Great Inagua, you cannot access the upgrade tiers that let you actually fight mid-game ships. Without Officers, you are missing Perfect Brace and Ram Dash. Without the blowdart gun from the story, hunting and stealth are harder than they need to be.

Do the main path until Sequence 4 ends. Then branch out.

Boarding Over Sinking: The Habit That Matters Most

Reddit videos will show players sinking ship after ship with mortars and calling it efficient. Those numbers come from fully upgraded Jackdaws in late-game waters. For the first ten hours, board every ship you incapacitate.

Boarding does three things:

  • Time pauses during boarding—other enemy ships wait exactly where you left them
  • You can repair the Jackdaw after capturing a ship, mid-fight
  • You take the full cargo instead of watching it sink

The repair trick alone saves runs. Incapacitate a ship, leave it floating, fight the rest of the fleet, then board and repair when your health gets low. Enemies stop attacking during boarding sequences.

The Bottom Line

Depends on whether you played the original. If you are coming in fresh, the learning curve is standard for an action-adventure game—expect a few deaths while the parry timing clicks. If you played Black Flag in 2013, expect frustration. Muscle memory is your enemy. The counter-kill rhythm is gone, the upgrade system moved, and Officer abilities are not optional for comfortable mid-game progression.

For everyone: push the main story to Sequence 4, recruit Lucy Baldwin immediately, and board instead of sink. Those three priorities smooth out nearly every rough edge in the first ten hours.
