Overwatch Season 5, A Grim Doctrine, began on 6 October 2026: Doctrine joins as the new Support, Sombra moves from Damage to Support, and the Top 500 Challenger leaderboard now sorts by Rank instead of Challenger Score. Blizzard describes the Reign of Talon story arc as reaching its conclusion this season. This guide covers the competitive changes first, then Doctrine, Sombra and the Unvaulted Battle Passes, using Blizzard’s own October 6 patch notes.
TL;DR
- Season 5 began 6 October 2026, and Blizzard calls it the beginning of the end for Reign of Talon.
- Top 500 now sorts by Rank; Challenger Score is only the requirement to be on the board, and Heat Bonus is removed.
- Doctrine (Support, Survivor subrole) shipped already nerfed from the September trial build.
- Sombra is a Support (Tactician subrole) with no Hack; Hotfix heals and Cyberspace Weakens enemies.
- Unvaulted Battle Passes from Seasons 1 – 15 are in the shop; only one can be active at a time.

What Overwatch Season 5 A Grim Doctrine Adds
Season 5 is Blizzard’s October 2026 season for Overwatch (the game dropped the “2” earlier this year). It starts with Doctrine, described in Blizzard’s season post as the long-awaited new Support hero. He had a trial weekend before launch. The same patch adds the new payload map Grímsvötn, a Roadhog rework and Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games, a Halloween arcade mode that runs for four weeks and where Doctrine is also playable. Roadhog is a Tank; for earlier tank balance context, see Overwatch’s mid-season tank nerfs.
If the grind is the only part worth skipping, Overwatch boosting runs the same route on your own account.
Competitive Changes: Top 500 Now Ranks by Rank
The Top 500 Challenger leaderboard now sorts by Rank by default, where it previously sorted by Challenger Score. End of Season title rewards now reference Rank, and Heat Bonus has been removed. Challenger Score stays only as the requirement to be on the leaderboard: the 500 players with the highest Challenger Score make the board, and the one with the highest actual Rank can sit at number one even if they have the lowest Challenger Score of those 500. Blizzard’s stated reason is that the focus on Rank is intended to reward its most skilled players with less emphasis on play time.
Map voting change
The same patch changes Map Voting: you can no longer be offered your last two maps played within a two-hour period. Escort and Hybrid now count as the same mode for the rule that the offered maps include at least two different modes, and the random map slot does not follow these rules. If you want the wider picture of how ranks work, see Overwatch ranks explained.
What Blizzard has not said yet
Neither the October 6 patch notes nor the October 5 season post mention a rank reset, new placement matches or rank decay for Season 5. The same two documents give no start time beyond “October 6” and no Season 5 end date, and neither publishes a Doctrine win rate.
Doctrine: New Support Hero Kit and Launch Nerfs

Doctrine is a Support in the Survivor subrole, and his official hero page lists Watchpoint: Grímsvötn as his origin. See the official Doctrine hero page for the live ability list. Descriptions and Infused effects below follow that hero page. Infuse has no effect of its own: it empowers the next ability you use.
The notes raise his ultimate cost by 8% and halve the damage and healing conversion rate of the Transfusion major perk. Blizzard’s developer comment says Doctrine was well received on the trial weekend but was overperforming relative to other Supports. Trial-weekend footage predates these changes, so check that a guide built on it has been updated to the October 6 numbers.
| Ability | What it does | Infused | Launch change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eternal Scepter | Heals allies, hurts enemies | Larger piercing blast | None listed |
| Infuse | Empowers your next ability | — | None listed |
| Invigorating Drones | Ally: attack speed, healing | Drones on Doctrine too | 35% → 30% speed |
| Shrouded Momentum | Dash, less damage taken | Free-flight | 7 → 8 s; 50% → 40% |
| Deliverance (ultimate) | Cuts enemy max health, overhealth | — | 8 → 6 s; Decay 5 → 4 s |
Shrouded Momentum also loses its critical hit immunity, and Deliverance’s drone fire rate increased from 4 to 5.
Sombra Moves to Support: Hotfix, Cyberspace and No Hack
Sombra moved from the Damage role to Support and from the Recon subrole to Tactician. Blizzard’s developer comment says Hack was removed because being locked out of abilities was jarring and frustrating for most players. In its place she inflicts Weaken, which reduces a target’s own damage and healing output by 50%. Her passive Opportunist is replaced by Conspirator, which reveals fully charged enemy ultimates to her. Everything in the table is from the October 6 patch notes.
Her perks change as well. The new minor perk Life Hack makes EMP apply Hotfix to all nearby allies. Of the two new major perks, Data Packet cuts Hotfix’s main cooldown by 4 s when she hacks a health pack with it, and Cybersecurity doubles Cyberspace healing on allies below half health. Her perks also need more experience: 67% more for minor and 69.5% more for major.
| Ability | Patch-note numbers |
|---|---|
| Hotfix (secondary fire) | 65 instant + 25/s; 175 total or 12 s; 2 charges, 8 s |
| Hotfix on objects | Health packs, most enemy deployables; own 6 s cd |
| Cyberspace (ability 1) | Impact 40 dmg / 40 heal; then 25 dmg / 30 heal per s |
| Translocator | Stealth 6.5 s (was 5); range 12.25 m; 7.5 s |
| Machine Pistol | 7 per shot (was 8); falloff from 20 m |
| EMP | Cost +67.5%; 20% of current health (was 25%) |
Hotfix has a 0.5 s cast and 17 m range, and works in stealth with a brief reveal that does not break it. The 175 total includes the first 65. Hacking a health pack or one of most enemy deployables costs no charge, but taking damage during the hack cancels it and starts that 6 s cooldown; hacked health packs last 30 s instead of 45 s. Cyberspace’s zone lasts 3 s with a 5 m radius. Translocator now takes 0.75 s to enter stealth (was 0.3 s), and Machine Pistol’s maximum spread drops from 2.3 to 2 degrees.

Unvaulted Battle Passes: How They Work
Revised Battle Passes from Seasons 1 – 15 are sold in the shop under the new Unvaulted Battle Pass tab. Previously purchased passes can be activated, and progress made when the pass first ran carries over. Only one Unvaulted pass can be active at a time, alongside the current season’s pass. Per Blizzard’s season post, an Unvaulted pass you acquire stays on your account permanently; progress you made on it before, Free track included, carries forward, and eligible Premium rewards unlock from that progress; and when you finish one, it rolls into the next available pass unless you pick another. The patch notes name one exception: the “2026: Season 4 Battle Pass”, this year’s Season 4 rather than Legacy Season 4, is not available at launch and arrives at midseason.
Warning
Mythic skins, Mythic Prisms, Overwatch Coins, XP Boosts and Player Titles are no longer obtainable in Unvaulted passes, so an old pass does not return its original full reward list.
What it costs
Blizzard’s season post and patch notes do not state a price (checked 11 October 2026). esports.gg and OW Cavalry report 1,000 Overwatch Coins per pass you do not already own. How long a pass takes to finish is not stated either.

Our Take: Where Season 5 Leaves You
Our Take
The Top 500 change is the one ranked players should read twice.
Our reading: sorting by Rank shifts the board toward who is highest, with Challenger Score reduced to an entry gate. Whether that changes how much you need to play is not something the notes spell out. Doctrine and Sombra both launched with numbers that Blizzard may adjust again, so treat any early tier opinion as provisional. Check the official patch notes before building anything around launch values.
