Crimson Desert has its first expansion, and it has a date. Charting the Unknown arrives on 15 October 2026, pre-orders opened on 3 September, and the headline addition is not another stretch of desert — it is the ocean.

Pearl Abyss published the rollout to the hour rather than to the day, which matters if you were planning to be there at the start.

One release moment, three calendars. If you are in Central Europe the expansion technically opens on the 16th for you, and that is not a delay — it is the same instant.
Where the grind outlasts the interest, Crimson Desert boosting picks it up from wherever the account already stands.
What Is Actually in It
The Steam post is short and points at the official site. The site describes four pillars, and they are worth reading closely because two of them change how the map works rather than adding to it.
The ocean opens. Adventure now extends beyond Pywel’s shores: you take command of a ship, sail to new islands off the coast, and dive beneath the surface for underwater treasures, sunken ruins and hidden mysteries. That is a second traversal layer — surface and underwater — attached to a map that until now ended at the coastline.
New threats on land and at sea. Pearl Abyss promises “your fiercest battles yet” and says they will require adapting tactics rather than repeating them.
A settled life in Pywel. You can rent and manage facilities to earn money, build a home through an upgraded Housing mode, and deepen relationships by talking with the people of Pywel. This is the part most easily missed in a trailer: it is an economy and management layer, not a cosmetic one.
The story continues on four fronts. An ominous presence in the desert, a dangerous political conflict, a journey beyond time, and an ancient secret beneath the waves — carried by Kliff, Oongka and Damiane individually rather than as one party.
The Pre-Order Bonus — and the Mac Footnote
Pre-ordering gets the Charter’s Diving Set for Kliff and Oongka and the Charter’s Light Diving Set for Damiane. Both are cosmetic sets tied to the diving theme, and Pearl Abyss calls them a DLC-exclusive pre-order bonus — the usual meaning of which is that they stop being obtainable when pre-orders close.
If you play on Mac
Charting the Unknown will not be available on the Mac App Store at launch. Pearl Abyss says it will announce separately if the content is planned for Mac in future — which is not the same as promising it. Pre-ordering there today buys something you cannot yet play on that platform.
What This Does to a Finished Map
If you have already cleared Pywel, this is the first time the game moves the boundary rather than filling in what was inside it. Islands off the coast and an underwater layer are new ground by definition, and the collectible logic that made the base map a long job applies to them too.
The base game is also a different product from the one most guides describe: since 25 August it is Crimson Desert Enhanced — a free 2.00 update for existing owners that added cutscenes and story moments to the main questline, voice-over in German, French, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese and Japanese, Arabic interface and subtitles, and every post-launch update to date.

What Has Not Been Said
Four things people will ask this week and nobody can answer yet.
The price. Pre-orders are open; the announcement does not state a figure, and it varies by storefront and region in any case.
The size. No hour count, no island count, no map area comparison has been published.
Whether it is included in anything. Enhanced was free for owners of the base game. This is an expansion, described as a separate purchase — but no bundle or season structure has been described either way.
Mac timing. Explicitly unresolved.
Common Misconceptions
Myth: Charting the Unknown is part of the free Enhanced update
No. Enhanced (25 August) was free to existing owners. Charting the Unknown is an expansion with its own pre-order, and the pre-order bonus is exclusive to it.
Myth: Asia gets it a day later
Everyone gets it at the same moment. 22:00 UTC on 15 October is 07:00 on 16 October in Korea and Japan — the calendar changes, the release does not.
Myth: diving is just a swimming animation
Pearl Abyss describes underwater treasures, sunken ruins and an entire story thread set beneath the waves. It is content, not traversal flavour.

The interesting half of this expansion is not the ocean. It is the facilities and Housing layer underneath it.
Sailing and diving are what a trailer sells, and they will be the first thing everyone does on the 15th. But “rent and manage a variety of facilities to earn your fortune” describes a persistent economy, and that changes what a session in Pywel is for once the novelty of the water wears off.
On pre-ordering: the only thing you lose by waiting is two cosmetic diving sets, and the only thing you gain is them. There is no price, no runtime and no reviews yet. That is a decision that can safely wait until the week of launch — unless the sets are the point for you.
