Money in The Blood of Dawnwalker is called denarii, and the game itself confirms the name: one of its achievements, “Smuggler”, asks you to earn 1,000 denarii selling silver. That single line tells you more about the economy than most of the launch coverage — it names the currency, names the trade that pays, and puts a number on it.
What follows separates what the game states, what the guides agree on, and what they contradict each other about. The last part matters most, because the disagreement is about the one step that can be lost permanently.
En resumen
- The currency is denarii — confirmed by the game’s own achievement text
- Junk is not clutter, it is income. Merchants offer a “Sell all Junk” option that clears the pile in one action
- Check the Trade Goods tab before leaving town. Those items behave like junk but sell for more
- Silver is the real money, and it needs a specific buyer — the Silver Trader in Svartrau
- That trader can be killed by your own choices. If it happens, nobody else buys silver for the rest of that playthrough
- Two routes open him up: the “Into the Den” quest, which hands you a Letter With a Tip, or Infamy level 4 — then one line of dialogue
The Currency, and the One Number the Game States Itself
Denarii — denarius in the singular, which fits a game set in 14th-century Europe. You spend it on weapons, armour, healing items and the rest of the usual merchant stock.
The achievement list is the only place the game puts a figure on any of this in public: “Smuggler — Earn 1000 denarii selling silver.” (the game’s own Steam achievement list, where it sits next to “Miser — Accumulate 5000 denarii”.) It is worth reading twice. Not “earn 1,000 denarii”, but earn it selling silver — the game is pointing at the trade it considers the money-maker, and it is the same one every guide converges on.
Where the grind outlasts the interest, Boosting de The Blood of Dawnwalker picks it up from wherever the account already stands.
Early Game: Sell the Junk, Then Check Trade Goods
Your inventory fills fast if you loot as you explore, and the game gives you a blunt tool for it: talking to a merchant offers “Sell all Junk”, which clears the low-value pile in one action instead of item by item.
The trap is next to it. The Trade Goods tab holds things that look like junk and are tracked separately because they are not — they carry a higher price. Dumping everything without opening that tab is the most common way to leave denarii on the table in the first hours.
Mid Game: Silver, and the Buyer Who Can Die
Silver is the best thing you can pick up early, and it stays the best thing to sell well past that. But ordinary merchants are not the buyer. The Silver Trader lives in Svartrau, and until you have access to him, silver sits in your bags as weight.
Then comes the part that makes this an article rather than a checklist. The Silver Trader can be killed as a consequence of your choices during the story. If that happens, the guides say no other merchant will buy silver for the rest of that playthrough, and nothing in the interface warns you beforehand. Scattered player reports describe other buyers turning up; none of them has held up to checking, so plan as if the Silver Trader is the only one — the cost of being wrong runs the other way.
In a game already built around a thirty-day clock — where time spent is the resource you cannot get back — losing the only silver buyer is the rare mistake that is worse than losing time. It is permanent within the run.
How to Unlock the Silver Trader
Two routes lead to him, and they are alternatives rather than steps: either one is enough. Both are described the same way by Game8 y TheGamer, which is why this section names them instead of hedging.
| Route | What it takes | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Complete “Into the Den” | Finish the quest and loot the marked cache — it holds the Letter With a Tip, which names the trader and points to Svartrau | The route most guides put first: no reputation cost, and it can be done whenever the quest comes up |
| Reach Infamy level 4 (Notorious) | Earned through Court Activities. At level 4 the trader recognises Coen and deals with him without the letter | The fallback if the quest has already gone past you — but Infamy is not free elsewhere |
| Then, either way: say the line | Choose the dialogue option “I know you trade in silver.” | Not optional. Skipping it leaves a merchant who appears to sell nothing |
Whichever route you take, the shop does not open on sight: you have to pick the dialogue line “I know you trade in silver.” Players who walked up, saw a merchant with nothing to sell and left assumed the unlock had failed — it had not, they had simply not said the sentence. «Into the Den» is the route most guides recommend, because Infamy level 4 is earned through Court Activities and drags consequences of its own behind it.
What Is Still Unknown
Prices. Beyond the achievement’s 1,000 denarii, no published figure holds up: not what silver sells for, not what gear costs, not what a full upgrade path runs to.
How much you actually need. Nobody has finished the game enough times to say what a playthrough costs, and the thirty-day structure means two players can need very different amounts.
What Infamy level 4 costs you elsewhere. The route is documented; the side effects of being Notorious in the rest of the game are not, and no guide has traced them.
Our Take: Protect the Buyer, Not the Balance
Nuestra opinión
The scarce thing in this economy is not denarii. It is the one merchant who buys silver, and he is killable.
Everything else here is recoverable. Sell the wrong junk and you lose a handful of coin; miss the Trade Goods tab and you lose a little more. Lose the Silver Trader and you have removed the best income in the game from that entire run, in a game that already limits you to thirty days.
So the practical order is: clear junk freely, check Trade Goods before every town exit, hoard silver rather than selling it cheap — and when the story puts you in a position to make a choice around Svartrau, understand that the trader is a resource, not a character.
Sources and Confidence
The publisher has not documented the economy. What follows is where each claim came from, and how far to trust it.
| Claim | Where it comes from | Estado |
|---|---|---|
| The currency is called denarii | The game’s own achievement text — “Smuggler: Earn 1000 denarii selling silver” | Game data |
| “Sell all Junk” merchant option; Trade Goods tab holds higher-value items | Game8 y AllThings. How, independently | Two sources agree |
| Silver is the best early loot to sell; the Silver Trader is in Svartrau | The same two guides | Two sources agree |
| The Silver Trader can be killed by player choices, ending silver sales for that playthrough | Game8, stated as a warning | Single source, and the highest-stakes claim here — flagged as such |
| How the trader is unlocked — “Into the Den” with the Letter With a Tip, or Infamy level 4 | Game8 y TheGamer, independently, both naming the “I know you trade in silver.” step | Two sources agree |
| Prices, totals, how much a playthrough needs | Nobody has published them | Unknown, left unknown |
| Whether any merchant besides the Silver Trader buys silver | The guides say none does; scattered player reports say otherwise, and none of them could be confirmed | Unresolved — this page plans for the stricter case |
