Overwatch now has two distinct limited-time ranked event formats: Competitive Drives, which use Drive Score and award Signatures, and experimental Team Drives, which use Fame and award Player Card Frames. The distinction matters because Blizzard changed Competitive Drive scoring after the system’s 2024 debut, while Team Drives introduced separate grouping and completion rules in 2026.
Next event
Team Drives return from 29 October to 1 November 2026, the last Competitive run of the Reign of Talon, per Blizzard’s Season 5 announcement. No start or end time is posted yet; the September drive ran from 11 a.m. PT to 11 a.m. PT. Finish your Competitive placements first. Hero Bans and Map Voting stay on.
Key points
- The original Skill Rank percentage formula belongs to the October 2024 Competitive Drive and is no longer a reliable description of later Drives.
- Competitive Drives use checkpoints and award Competitive Points plus a BattleTag cosmetic called a Signature.
- Team Drives use Fame and Gladiator Ranks, encourage players to stay grouped after wins and award Player Card Frames.
- Completing a Team Drive requires passing The Trial by winning three of your last four matches.
- Blizzard has not published enough current scoring data to support a universal estimate for the number of wins required.

Competitive Drives and Team Drives Are Different Events
| Feature | Competitive Drive | Team Drive |
|---|---|---|
| Progress | Drive Score and checkpoints | Fame and Gladiator Ranks |
| Grouping | Playing in a squad can provide bonus Drive Score | Winning teammates are automatically grouped by default |
| Main cosmetic | Signature | Player Card Frame |
| Completion rule | Reach the final Drive checkpoint | Progress through the ranks and pass The Trial |
| Next event | None in the Season 5 announcement | 29 October – 1 November 2026 |
Both formats add a temporary progression track to ranked play, but their currencies, social systems and cosmetic rewards are different. Fame does not replace or convert into Drive Score, and a Team Drive does not award the Signature associated with a standard Competitive Drive.

How Competitive Drive Score Has Changed
| October 2024 Drive Score | Launch reward |
|---|---|
| 300 | 500 Competitive Points |
| 700 | Signature |
| 1,200 | 1,000 Competitive Points |
| 1,700 | Advanced Signature |
| 2,200 | 1,500 Competitive Points |
| 2,700 | Elite Signature |
The October 2024 Launch Formula
When Competitive Drives debuted in October 2024, a win awarded Drive Score equal to 10 times the Skill Rank percentage gained. Blizzard’s example gave 210 Drive Score for a 21% rank increase. A loss deducted five times the Skill Rank percentage lost, so the deduction was half the rate of an equivalent gain.
The launch event had six protected checkpoints. Once a player reached one, subsequent losses could not push the meter below that threshold.
These are historical launch values, not guaranteed thresholds for every subsequent Drive.
The Season 17 Rule Change
For the August 2025 Drive, Blizzard announced that Drive Score would come from wins rather than Skill Rank changes. Rank therefore no longer determined the score earned from a victory. Losses did not remove progress before the first checkpoint, while the loss penalty increased as players advanced through later checkpoints.
That event also allowed progression in both Core Competitive and Stadium Ranked, with squad wins providing bonus Drive Score. Blizzard described it as a new challenge curve but did not publish a complete fixed per-win scoring table in the announcement or patch notes.
Outdated formula warning
The 21% rank gain and 210 Drive Score example is useful for understanding the October 2024 launch event. It should not be used to calculate the cost of later Competitive Drives after Blizzard removed rank from the scoring calculation.
Competitive Drive scoring should not be described with one permanent formula. Blizzard has already revised how the system works.
How Signatures and Prestige Work
A Signature is the cosmetic reward associated with a standard Competitive Drive. It frames a player’s BattleTag in places such as the Name Card, scoreboard, Hero Select and Play of the Game presentation. Higher checkpoints upgrade the event’s Signature from its base version to Advanced and Elite variants.
Completing Drives can also add a prestige marker showing previous completions. At launch, Blizzard represented that prestige with a Roman numeral counting completed Drives within the applicable Competitive Drive period.
Signatures are not permanent account cosmetics in the same sense as a purchased skin. Blizzard’s Competitive Drive documentation states that Signatures are removed after a rank reset, with a new Signature reward made available for a later Drive period. Blizzard’s published material does not confirm a permanent prestige cap of VI, so no fixed cap should be assumed.
How Team Drive Fame and Auto-Grouping Work
Team Drives replace Drive Score with Fame. Winning progresses the player through Gladiator Ranks, while consecutive wins with the same group grant an increasing Fame bonus.
After a win, the event automatically groups the winning teammates by default. Players can remain together and queue again, leave and retain their individual bonus, or enter with a premade full stack. Leaving means the player no longer benefits from the bonuses carried by the other winners from that match. For the October drive Blizzard repeats the point: keeping the team together speeds up the climb through the Gladiator Ranks.
Automatic grouping is optional. Blizzard lists a toggle under Social → General → Groups → Enable Auto-Grouping on Team Drive Wins. Turning it off does not block participation, although Blizzard says solo completion will be harder because the player receives fewer opportunities to benefit from teammates’ bonuses.
How to Pass The Trial
Progressing through the Gladiator Ranks is not enough by itself to complete a Team Drive. Players must also pass The Trial by winning three of their last four matches. Because this condition uses a rolling four-match record, a new result changes which matches count toward the requirement.
Team Drives award Player Card Frames rather than Signatures. For the September 2026 event, the first 10,000 players to finish The Trial also qualify for a temporary dynamic title displaying their completion order. Blizzard says those titles will unlock at the end of the Team Drive. For the October drive the Season 5 announcement words it as a Dynamic Title for the first 10,000 groups to finish the final Trial, and does not restate the three-of-four rule; we assume it carries over until Blizzard says otherwise.
The dynamic title is a separate, temporary reward. It does not imply a permanent leaderboard placement or change the Player Card Frame awarded through normal Team Drive progression.

How Many Wins Does a Drive Require?
There is no reliable universal answer. Competitive Drive rules and challenge curves have changed, and the September 2026 Team Drive uses Fame bonuses that can vary depending on whether players maintain a winning group.
Blizzard’s public Team Drive notes do not list every Fame award, bonus value or Gladiator Rank threshold. The current in-game event panel is therefore the appropriate place to check the remaining requirements. Any fixed win total would depend on undocumented values and a player’s results, so estimates based on the original 2024 Drive formula are misleading.
