Valheim 1.0’s achievement system carries a built-in cheat flag — an eligibility mark for the achievement list, not an anti-cheat that bans or blocks play — and it flags more than just the person who typed a command. Iron Gate’s own 1.0 FAQ lays out several distinct rules for how a world or character can end up marked as cheated, alongside one named exception, and at least one of them — picking up the wrong item from a friend’s inventory — catches players who never touched the console at all. This runs through exactly what triggers the flag, what it locks, what does and doesn’t clear it, how to get achievements back with the console command hotfix 1.0.12 added, and how to structure a co-op world so every kill on the Valheim boss order counts.

En resumen

  • Most devcommands (spawn is the named example) permanently flag both your character and the world save; freefly is the one named exception.
  • Characters that cheated before 1.0 are marked retroactively, and since 1.0 a confirmation prompt appears before you enter a cheated state.
  • Picking up a spawned item from another player gives your own clean character a temporary cheat state, even if you never opened the console.
  • Temporary states clear by throwing out every cheated item, which are visibly marked; hammer-mode is also classed as temporary but the exact reset trigger isn’t detailed.
  • Hotfix 1.0.12 (11 September 2026, Steam first) added a console command — yesiuseddevcommandsbutiwantmyachievementsanyway — that opts a flagged character back into achievements. It is a command, not a settings toggle.

What Is the Valheim 1.0 Cheat Flag?

The cheat flag is Iron Gate’s eligibility mark for the achievement list that shipped with Valheim 1.0 — it decides whether a character and world can still earn achievements, and nothing else: no bans, no blocked servers, no lost items. It is built to stop cheat commands from being used to unlock achievements without earning them properly. The rules below come from the FAQ and apply on every platform; what differs by platform is the 1.0.12 opt-back-in command, which shipped on Steam first. There is a system in place to prevent achievements from being unlocked if you have cheats enabled, and most commands (such as “spawn”) will place a flag on your current character and world save, informing you that it is permanently locked from getting any achievements. The flag isn’t one setting — it’s several separate triggers, some tied to commands, some tied to items, and one tied to a world modifier.

This sits alongside the rest of the 1.0 launch, which added the Deep North biome and its patch notes, new boss content, and the full achievement list — all built and published by Iron Gate Studio and Coffee Stain Publishing.

How the Flag Actually Spreads Between Characters and Worlds

The part that trips people up is that the flag isn’t limited to whoever ran the command. Characters that have used cheats before 1.0 will also be marked in this way, and there will also be a confirmation required to enter a cheated state after 1.0, to prevent you from accidentally marking out your character and world as cheated. By our reading, that confirmation is there because the pre-1.0 system could catch someone out with no warning — a command typed out of curiosity, and the run locked before you knew.

The genuinely underrated part is item contamination. Items that have been spawned in will also be marked in this way, and if a non-cheated player character picks up a cheated item, they will enter a temporary cheat state. In practice, that means a friend who spawned in a stack of resources on their own character can hand you an item that quietly flags your character too, even though you never touched a console yourself. Check a shared chest before a boss fight; marked items are visible.

EstadoTriggerHow It Clears (per official FAQ)
Temporary — item-basedPicking up a cheated itemThrow out all cheated items from inventory
Temporary — hammer-modeWorld modifier enabledNot detailed beyond "temporary cheat"
Permanent — character/worldUsing most devcommands, or pre-1.0 cheat historyNot clearable per the FAQ; the 1.0.12 console command (below) re-enables achievements — Steam first

What Clears the Flag and What Doesn't

Here’s the split that matters most for anyone chasing boss achievements. Temporarily cheated characters are locked out from unlocking achievements while in this state, and can become eligible for achievements again if they throw out all cheated items from their inventory. Cheated items are visibly marked, so in theory you can check your own inventory before a boss fight and see exactly what’s flagging you.

The permanent flag from devcommands is a different story. The original FAQ describes it as locking a character and world “permanently” and does not lay out a way to reverse it. That changed after launch: hotfix 1.0.12, released on 11 September 2026, added a console command that opts a character back into achievements after devcommands or mods. Iron Gate’s own framing: “We will leave it to your own judgement whether or not to activate this function – Oden will surely know if you use it dishonourably.” The same hotfix added a popup that tells you when achievements are available again after a temporary block. It is an opt-in for achievement eligibility; the notes do not say the underlying mark is deleted.

Consejo

To opt back in, type this in the console (the same place devcommands are entered), exactly, with no spaces:

yesiuseddevcommandsbutiwantmyachievementsanyway

The notes spell it out as “yes i used devcommands but i want my achievements anyway” and tell you to remove the blank spaces. It shipped in 1.0.12, Steam only at the time of the post; Iron Gate says the fix “will be extended to all platforms in an upcoming hotfix”. 1.0.10 (1.0.11 on Xbox) is a separate set of fixes and does not include it. Check your version before you rely on it.

Hammer-Mode and World Modifiers: Where the Line Actually Sits

A Viking builds a wooden structure with a hammer in a snowy dusk setting.
Illustration: Building tools blur the line between play and consequence

Hammer-mode gets treated by a lot of players as a harmless building convenience, but Iron Gate lists it among the world modifiers that block achievements, as a temporary cheat. Some world modifiers such as hammer-mode will also block certain achievements. Hammer-mode counts as a temporary cheat. The FAQ doesn’t publish which specific achievements hammer-mode blocks, so treat “certain achievements” as exactly that — an unspecified subset, not the full list, until Iron Gate says otherwise.

How to Run a Co-op World Without Losing Achievement Progress

The practical setup, and this is editorial judgment rather than anything Iron Gate has published as a formal recommendation: keep one world per group and treat devcommands as off-limits on it entirely, including “just to check something.” The FAQ puts the permanent mark on the character and world save together, so a command typed on the shared world locks that world for everyone’s achievements, and the character that typed it carries the mark into any other world too. Experiments with spawn commands or hammer-mode belong on a separate character on a separate throwaway world — a spare world alone does not protect your main character — and it is worth backing up the character and world files before you try anything, because the mark is not described as reversible.

What it costs if it happens: achievements stop counting on that world and for that character. Your skills, buildings and inventory are untouched — the flag is about the achievement list, nothing else. On Steam, the 1.0.12 command above restores achievement eligibility for the character; where that does not apply yet (other platforms until the follow-up hotfix), the only clean route to achievements is a fresh character on a fresh world, with the progress on the old save still there to play, just not tracked. If you use a farming service — ours included — ask how the items are obtained; resources gathered by hand in normal play carry no mark, anything produced with commands does.

Players short on time can put Boosting de Valheim alongside a normal playthrough rather than in place of one.

Common Misconceptions About the Valheim Cheat Flag

“Throwing out cheated items clears every kind of flag”

It only clears the temporary state from picking up a cheated item. The FAQ separates that case from the permanent flag placed on a character and world by devcommands — throwing out items doesn’t touch that one.

“Only the person who ran the command gets locked out”

If a non-cheated player character picks up a cheated item, they will enter a temporary cheat state — so a teammate who never opened the console can still end up flagged just by looting a shared chest.

“Hammer-mode is just a building tool, not a cheat”

Iron Gate’s own FAQ lists hammer-mode among the world modifiers that block certain achievements and classes it as a temporary cheat — lighter than a devcommand flag, but not nothing.

Our Take: Is the Cheat Flag Worth Worrying About?

Nuestra opinión

For a straight, no-cheats playthrough this system is background noise — it only bites players who share loot carelessly or treat devcommands as a quick fix.

The confirmation prompt Iron Gate added with 1.0 is the right call, since the old accidental-flag risk was a genuine problem for anyone who tested a command once out of curiosity. Group discipline matters more than individual behaviour: one careless player with a spawn command locks the shared world’s achievements for everyone on it. The 1.0.12 command is a real way back for a flagged character on Steam, but it is an opt-in that Iron Gate pointedly leaves to your conscience, and it is not described as erasing the mark — a clean character on a clean world is still the safer bet.

Preguntas frecuentes

Does joining a friend's flagged world flag my own character?
The official FAQ addresses item pickup specifically — a clean character that picks up a spawned item enters a temporary cheat state — but it doesn't spell out every scenario for simply joining a flagged world without touching items. Treat any world where devcommands have been used as compromised until you've checked for marked items.
Can I remove a permanent flag by making a new character in the same world?
The FAQ describes the flag as applying to the world save as well as the character, and doesn't list character deletion as a fix. Unconfirmed beyond that — Iron Gate hasn't published a specific procedure for this case.
Does opening the console itself trigger the flag, or only running a cheat command?
The FAQ's wording is tied to "using most commands (such as spawn)," not to opening the console on its own. Whether simply enabling the console without running a command counts is not addressed directly in the official text.
Did hotfix 1.0.12 undo existing cheat flags?
Not exactly. It added a console command — yesiuseddevcommandsbutiwantmyachievementsanyway, typed without spaces — that lets a flagged character opt back into achievements; Iron Gate leaves using it to your judgement. It restores achievement eligibility and is not described as deleting the mark. Steam only at the time of the post; other platforms are promised a follow-up hotfix.
Does hammer-mode affect the world permanently once you turn it off?
The FAQ classifies hammer-mode as a temporary cheat that blocks certain achievements while active, but doesn't detail the exact mechanism for when that temporary state ends.
