Overwatch keeps a separate rank for each role, and a role starts every ranked year unplaced: the yearly reset that opened Season 1 in February sent every account to Unranked, and the first ten competitive games on a role decide where its climb begins. Ranks then carry across the seasons inside the year, so a placement run is played once and lived with for months — which is why it is worth spending on before the climb rather than after it.
Two orders live on this shelf. Placement matches are the ten games on the role you name, played on your account by a booster from your region, on PC, with your hero pool rather than ours. The Competitive unlock is for fresh accounts: the Quick Play wins the game asks for before the Competitive queue opens, with the option to roll straight into the placements in the same order.
Every run is hand-played with offline status on; you watch the rank appear in your own profile, and nothing reaches the booster until you have looked at the result and confirmed it. If the account is already placed, the rank boosting shelf continues from wherever the placements left it.
